Well, considering the songs had to be written by a real person who obviously had something to say, found this as a medium in which to express the ideas they had. Similar to an author using a pen name or an animator doing the same. Sometimes people don't want to take credit for the work they do in these fields especially considering how personal the feelings expressed in songs like this are. Therefore they utilize a medium that allows them to retain their anonymity. Vocaloid is a fantastic representation of this idea in my opinion. Let me know what you think on the subject if you see this. I do realize I'm posting this two years after your original comment. Edit: changed some of the wording

To me, the song is about how others blindly look down upon her when they know nothing about her at all. They tell her that she is what they tell her to be. But she rebels. Everyone is writing the laws and judging the masses, but she refuses to accept their selfish logic. She holds contempt for the institutions (Science? Religion? Law? Society?) that attempt to pin her down and force her to conform. They are self righteous and gratifying, too blinded by their own beliefs to see the torture that they inflict upon her. She has a dream that she is questioning because the whole of society is bearing down on her, and she is trying to figure out if she is justified or not.
It's sad that society and the human mind can drag individuals down a dark road. In the end, she was a type of person who simply thought about the world differently. Refusing to conform, not a bad thought, but it led her to a disappointed lifestyle. At least she could dream of a better world... A better option is to work towards a life that she sees fine in her eyes. The world and it's people may not be perfect. Isn't it fine to have dreams and work towards a better life?
+Julia Martinez For me, it's not that people are pressuring me to be "normal". It's more of the feeling of not fitting in. Combine that with a judgemental society and it leaves my mind a little disturbed. We should just live life how we want, but keep in mind of what our actions can do to others. I'm not interested in making another person's life even harder when most of us already have enough problems to deal with. So in the end, be the best person you can be or at least try to be nice.

It may relate to expectation. "Isn't it ok, though, if it's just in my dreams" expresses a disconnect between how she wishes to be perceived, and how she is perceived. Ia finds herself unable to resolve the paradox in that she seeks acceptance from the very source of her anguish (society). Ultimately she takes solace in memories that do not reflect reality. The ideologist knows this of course, yet she allows herself to be satisfied with illusions. Because by doing so she gives them meaning.
I've just started learning Japanese and I'm glad I can read some of the subtitles ^___^ I can't really understand the singing yet though, i'll have to work on that
Bakamatsuu I've been learning for only about a month now, and the main thing i've been using is an app called Human Japanese, it's really great with loads of chapters & it's for beginners ^__^ as well as that, I just google things like verbs and vocab etc...and learn different words and every day :) I learned to read and write hiragana pretty much perfectly from the HJ app and i'm working on katakana right now~ good luck if you decide to learn too - it's a really nice language :)
I started learning Japanese too, I'm just not that good yet... But I'm happy that I'm better at Japanese than French, and I live in Canada so I have to learn French on a daily basis in school.
Years ago I would listen to this song and just cry because I related to it so much. I felt understood and that I wasn’t alone in my feelings. Now I’ve gotten out, gotten help, and made a great life for myself. I’m genuinely happy with myself and life now. It’s really nostalgic listening to this. It makes me proud knowing how far I’ve come and that song helped me in some way to overcome it.
Came back here after 8 years, I suddenly had the urge to listen to this song again out of the blue. Still a Vocaloid and Utaite fan throughout the years :)

think the song is about a lonely girl who finds every detail important and judges, like in the beginning when she was criticizing the news, person saying anyone can talk like that with a script. However. However she is often bullied for doing that,so in the end she disappears..or something like that..
"This song describes my life." -Literally every outcast, socially-inept genius and "Only Sane Man" who has ever listened to this song and understood its lyrics. Including me. Though I think I'm just the former. Edit: In light of recent events (which we will not discuss here, please!), I fear that the lyrics of song are becoming more and more accurate...
+Ashtag_XD Well, I'm not gonna ask you how they insulted you, but whatever it was, just remember that words can't actually hurt you if you don't let them. Unless they throw a dictionary at you. Then it hurts like heck, no matter what.
I would say this sums up my experience (so far) on the Internet and possibly real life as well. (gonna quote CBA here) CBA (4 months ago) To me, the song is about how others blindly look down upon her when they know nothing about her at all. (end of quote) tbh I hate how people judge others. It really pisses me off. Just let me be who *I* want to be, okay? It's not that hard.
Uhto me why does it always seem like Japanese music have more meaning to it than Amarican music now and days? Now american is mainly just about love and sex. While Japanese music is talking about their hard life and stuggled times.
Timotius Marbun I think we all know that, we just discovered Japanese music and liked how it had meaning and sounded good. I also think Japanese itself sounds cool.
"Again, they criticize the sleeping me, sneering in a patronizing way." Everyone seems to take this line to mean that she is literally asleep or pretending to sleep, but I think it's metaphorical. If the translation is actually "the sleeping me" she could mean that they are criticizing the version of her with the eccentric clothing; the part of her that she is suppressing and is thus "sleeping." It's times like these that I wish I spoke Japanese so I could know just how accurate some translations are.
There's more. "Are you an idiot? even so you could put understandable words side by side." I think this is less about her thinking that she isn't smart and has more to do with other people treating her like an idiot because they can't understand what she's saying. Either she is too smart for people to know what she is talking about or she has an odd way of saying things.
I just found this song recently, and I love it so much. IA is my favorite utauloid and honestly I don’t know how I’ve never seen or heard this song until now!! >w
***** Hm...I find it odd that nobody has mentioned this, but the way I view the ''is mama or papa on top'' is that it's not only about sex but about gender and society. It's most common to view the man being on top during sex, and since the song is about an antisocial girl and the *society* she lives in, I always thought it was about gender roles and the irrational ways they're sometimes set up, because neither the man-on-top nor the woman-on-top position is ''correct'', people just view it that way due to stereotypes and the fact that people used to believe that the former was.
Anthony Hughes No, the whole song looks like it's about society to me. I was just saying that that was the reason why the line felt relevant to the rest of the song.
Papa wa Mama no ue ni nokkate. Ue ni- to be above. Nokkate-present of nokkaru- to get on. Literally it is Papa +standard particle+ Mama +possessive particle +above+ location particle+getting on. Is it papa or mama STANDING at the top? as an actual meaning of the translation rather than a literal word for word view. This English translation is a bit jarred, but there wasn't anything sexual about that. Sorry, but your theory...has nothing to do with it. This song had nothing, I repeat, NOTHING to do with sexual overtones or undertones. It's just the translation left quite a bit out and not just in that one line. Japanese is really vague so they don't necessarily complete sentences with verbs, sometimes they just use particles and leave the verb and the other construction in interpretation to the one they are speaking to, because they are pretty lazy about that. That is why you get so many misunderstandings in anime. While the two conversing will understand because the original topic started with them- the one who comes in suspects from vague words. This is why my friend didn't get the job in Japantown. Hands down she could spout off Japanese easily in proper, complete sentences but it's the cultural understanding of the language that she couldn't get and she knew it. She still tried. The interviewer asked her what ONE WORD meant....She got the translation just fine, but for Japanese while shopping that one word conveys a whole structure of a lengthy question and the interviewer told her she had to know common speech Japanese.
Susanne Eby The english translation actually failed to present the meanings precisely in several sentainces, the next sentence for example, means ' (my father) shook his bottom like a moron'. 腰(こし)means waist, not back. If the author means ' turned my back ', he would use the term ' 背向け ( せむけ) ' .
Susanne Eby Tbh the reason I mentioned sex was because others were interpreting it as something sexual so I thought I'd just missed something, but my main point was that it was about society's views on gender. The sex part I can take or leave.
I think it's about a girl who really wants to express herself and show who she is, and she dreams about being like that and having everyone love her for it. But in reality, her beliefs make people laugh at her and ridicule her. She knows she'll never be like she is in her dreams, hence "but it's okay if it's only in my dreams, right?"
I can't believe it's been years, IA is my first vocaloid I really love her design. Back then my friends questioned my taste in music because I always listen to her songs 🤧
I feel oddly connected to this song. I can't explain it the feeling but this song just described it perfectly. I considered myself "different" from my classmates because of what they are treating me. Up until now, I still get weird glances and looks whenever I say something unfamiliar or hard to understand for them. Some of them would make fun of me for my views, opinions and beliefs. And some would just roll their eyes whenever I say something truthful about the society. They don't say that I'm different, but I don't need words to confirm that because I could tell from their body language. It's a good thing that I'm not the only one who thinks like this at the class. And hence, the reason why I could survive high school.

When I found this song when I was probably about 12, I thought it was fantastic and I fell in love with it. I'm almost 17 now and it's still beautiful and is even more relatable now
It genuinely terrifies me that this cup conversation/children/theories/IDon'tEvenKnowAnymore comment chain is still renewing itself the way it is. Like. why did i even join this no it's like a war but cups CUPS
We may not know if there is exactly half, but we know its full if its over 2/3 and if its under 1/3 we know its empty , if it is between them then it is half. But if you think about it, if you like the contents its half empty even when full, but if you hate its contents it can never be empty until the family pet has something to drink.
That bit of hair in her face is bothering me a whole lot Like, IA, I can lend you a hair clip if you want You can even take the one I'm wearing, I don't care, I have like ten Just please no
Like a soul. We're always half there though we say we're always there and theres always more you want even when you say you don't want something. Thus making it like Half your soul is you and the other peice empty cause there is nothing there that fills your wants.
probably no one will even read this but. help me pls. i'm looking for a song It's a little known one. I used to have it in my likes but I think the video got deleted. I'm pretty sure it was IA who sang it, but there's a chance it was Miku, as well. I'm not too sure on the title- something with 'oto' (sound) and / or 'kaze' (wind), and I don't remember much of the lyrics as well. I only remember the video, which was a little girl (who kinda resembled Hiyori from Kagerou Project) lying on a dirt road, and I'm also pretty sure the road split at the end in two directions. It was a simple drawing I'm sorry the description is so vague... it's been probably 1~2 years since I've listened to it, but suddenly I have the urge to listen to it again, but I can't find it at all... I'm hoping someone here knows it
ok I might be late, but was it perhaps Oto no Aru Yume? it was a song in the IA the World ~Kaze~ album. I also had it on my like list before and it also dissapeared. I hope this helps ^w^
The question is: why are you trying to fit in with society? Why take the ridiculous amount of effort to be something so... Normal? Unoriginal? Boring? I distance myself from society, becoming whoever the hell I want to be. Because do I care about what society is? What is considered, cool? Like I care. Do what you want, society
In a ways to put it. We don't know anything of the glass of water prior to the question. Weather it was filled before hand, or if someone drank the water. If this previous knowledge was given, then we could make the correct assumption.
ok , I 'm Brazilian , but I'll say it anyway . I am a lonely too and when I see those people who never walk alone I think " how can they do this ? Always choose carefully what to speak , know realize what a person mean. Laugh even if you have grace . " I really hate having to do all this . But they who look frightened me , I can pretty much say what they think because it is not difficult to understand "what it ta doing there alone ? " and stuff . What I mean is that they think it strange to be alone , but I find it odd they stay always surrounded by people , it would be strange not the best word , I would say boring. But some people do not understand this very well and always asks " Why do you always stay alone ? " I reply " Why do I want . " I like being alone gives a good soul , and even though people say I look very serious does not mean it's sad, what's the point of smiling to herself ? I think that this video portrayed quite this part of the act as it is normal to be alone , what for many is something strange . I have accepted as I am , others still ask me questions is no.
it's sad that most comments are so old. this song is still gold tho

True
Every Vocaloid gives a feel that they wish they were a real person, which is really sad if you think about it.
You make a point there. Disappearance of Miku is very straight forward about this topic.
Ikr... But this is also the reason why we take them as real people

Who’s the idiotic looking person reflected in the mirror?
With logical loneliness and the trembling of the universe
My undermined heart feels jealousy

One of my earliest Vocaloid songs. I'm glad to have found it again.
Mine first is 39 from Hatsune
This song depicts a personal struggle without too much drama... I wish there were more songs like this.
My life in a nutshell.
It is full of painful angst though.
@@wannabehistorian371 yeah but it's not super dramatized imo

Now I’ve gotten out, gotten help, and made a great life for myself. I’m genuinely happy with myself and life now. It’s really nostalgic listening to this. It makes me proud knowing how far I’ve come and that song helped me in some way to overcome it.
Still working on it

Came back here after 8 years, I suddenly had the urge to listen to this song again out of the blue. Still a Vocaloid and Utaite fan throughout the years :)
今のボカロ聞いてても昔を越すことは自分の中では不可能なんだなぁってこの曲で毎回思わされる。すき。
2 years have passed...And still kicks ass...
Another year and a half, nothing has changed and nothing will change.
Around 6 years have now passed from its beginnings and it still stayed the same.
It has been 20 years. And still.
6 years. And it still does
It's been 3000 years

Thank you for helping me remember this lyrics back
(^u^)
I love you
think the song is about a lonely girl who finds every detail important and judges, like in the beginning when she was criticizing the news, person saying anyone can talk like that with a script. However. However she is often bullied for doing that,so in the end she disappears..or something like that..
"This song describes my life."
-Literally every outcast, socially-inept genius and "Only Sane Man" who has ever listened to this song and understood its lyrics.
Including me.
Though I think I'm just the former.
Edit: In light of recent events (which we will not discuss here, please!), I fear that the lyrics of song are becoming more and more accurate...

Nice to meet you too!
So, a dragon huh? How much gold have you collected from would-be heroes so far?

Well, I'm not gonna ask you how they insulted you, but whatever it was, just remember that words can't actually hurt you if you don't let them.
Unless they throw a dictionary at you. Then it hurts like heck, no matter what.

I would say this sums up my experience (so far) on the Internet and possibly real life as well.
(gonna quote CBA here)
CBA (4 months ago)
To me, the song is about how others blindly look down upon her when they know nothing about her at all. They tell her that she is what they tell her to be. But she rebels. Everyone is writing the laws and judging the masses, but she refuses to accept their selfish logic. She holds contempt for the institutions (Science? Religion? Law? Society?) that attempt to pin her down and force her to conform. They are self righteous and gratifying, too blinded by their own beliefs to see the torture that they inflict upon her.
(end of quote)
tbh I hate how people judge others. It really pisses me off. Just let me be who *I* want to be, okay? It's not that hard.
Nice job,I hate when people judge me aswell
10 years old but still feels like it belongs to 2050 or 2080. Still feels sweet to listen to!

Uhto me why does it always seem like Japanese music have more meaning to it than Amarican music now and days? Now american is mainly just about love and sex. While Japanese music is talking about their hard life and stuggled times.
I agree with you, and my mom and dad don't understand why I like Japanese music still...
Dont listen to hip hop. You'll find a plethora of songs not about love and sex
Well music is not limited to american and Japanese. There are Danish, Swedish, Italan, Icelandic, Korean, Chinese, English music as well.
Timotius Marbun I think we all know that, we just discovered Japanese music and liked how it had meaning and sounded good. I also think Japanese itself sounds cool.
because it's asian music B|
Its been 11 years ago but i still love this
it has been so long since I've last visited vocaloid. as I grew up, these words they say, hits different now than when they did when I first heard it.
This is and always will be my favourite IA song. ^u^

I just found this song recently, and I love it so much. IA is my favorite utauloid and honestly I don’t know how I’ve never seen or heard this song until now!! >w
Ia is a vocaloid not utau
such a bop even to this day
This is really nostalgic

After 5 years, I finally listened to this song again
This song is easy to relate to. Nearly everything I do people either believe I'm stupid or just stand and laugh at me.
wow this song is fantastic
IAちゃん可愛い!
She’s literally me
BEEN HERE ALL TEN YEARS BABY STILL GOIN AT IT
I can't believe it's been years, IA is my first vocaloid I really love her design.
Somehow I can relate xD
i have that song in my i pod^^

Anyone in 2024?????
This is my favourite song. Ever.
That... just blew my mind. I also like how this conversation has been going on consecutively for nearly 7 months.
When I found this song when I was probably about 12, I thought it was fantastic and I fell in love with it. I'm almost 17 now and it's still beautiful and is even more relatable now
01/01/2020. WHO STILL LISTEN TO THIS LEGEND?
Wooww.. this music gives me so much nostalgia
すきだ〜🥲
This song is the most "about me" song I ever heared
See people, this is why we don't get nice things in life, time traveling, killing cups with families, it's all so heartbreaking.
This song still slaps
My view of this video is how society wants everyone to fit in the ideal mold that they have for people and how she refuses to do so and mocks it.
this song really describes today's society
It genuinely terrifies me that this cup conversation/children/theories/IDon'tEvenKnowAnymore comment chain is still renewing itself the way it is. Like.
why did i even join this no
it's like a war

🤍IA! I love her and this song! Her voice is so beautiful! This was the first song by her that I listened and it is so amazing!🤍
cool
Jessie san だよな!
Because IA is just plain awesome
We may not know if there is exactly half, but we know its full if its over 2/3 and if its under 1/3 we know its empty , if it is between them then it is half. But if you think about it, if you like the contents its half empty even when full, but if you hate its contents it can never be empty until the family pet has something to drink.
in listen to this song every day!!! i absolutely adore it
やっぱり良い!
That bit of hair in her face is bothering me a whole lot
Like, IA, I can lend you a hair clip if you want
You can even take the one I'm wearing, I don't care, I have like ten
Just please no
You killed me XD
I thought I was the only one bothered by that. XD
Rhiannon Nope it bothers me that they are behind her glasses.
Rhiannon LalisaIsMyEverything when the amount of likes is 111 and you don’t want to ruin it 😢
Does she look like she cares
かわいい
Like a soul. We're always half there though we say we're always there and theres always more you want even when you say you don't want something. Thus making it like Half your soul is you and the other peice empty cause there is nothing there that fills your wants.
She understands me well, too well. That's why i like IA.
This is why I love IA!
probably no one will even read this but. help me pls. i'm looking for a song
It's a little known one. It was a simple drawing
I'm sorry the description is so vague... it's been probably 1~2 years since I've listened to it, but suddenly I have the urge to listen to it again, but I can't find it at all...
最高以外のなにものでもない

IA Is the best
ok , I 'm Brazilian , but I'll say it anyway .
Pretty much. I tried being social, I hated it. Can't understand why how people can be around each other for every minute of the day
I love the sounds used in this song. So videogamey
