Hey all, thanks for watching! I know some of you might say in real life you would normally have multiple air assets, multiple HARM shooters, strike packages, CAS, CAP flights etc etc. That is all true, but unfortunately trying to get DCS AI to do things you want operating within SAM engagement zones is just impossible, hence we've left that out. You'll just have to imagine the sky was full of other planes going about their missions and suppressing those other SA-6s ect. Here's my Patreon in case you like my work and want to support me (and gain access to .miz file): www.patreon.com/command_t Many Thanks! And Merry Christmas all!
in real life, its a lot of planes to do it with a high success rate or not worth it. but holy crap this video is amazing also ground forces/navy you'll work with; SA10 are dangerous, you dont get a warning they have this TWS like mode, called tvm - track via missile, itll guide the missile there with search radar then use radar for terminal guidance. also chaff does nothing, jamming does basically nothing inside 30nm by the time you see 10 on RWR too late. also; you won't even get big bird radar on rwr i bet, they will use other radars to work out your location then work out what asset to use and best tactic. not fair to implement a complex IADS in dcs without all the tools youd have in real life like satellites, missile detection systems, forward observers, drones, special forces etc HARMs, decoys, drones, artillery, special forces/commandos, new multi seeker HARM ER, stealth aircraft in ukraine those switch blade drones can take them out or himars. Glide bomb saturation from air/surface.
@@oldfashionedwrx3574 Yes unfortunately we simply can't have all these assets in one mission in DCS. The AI are too dumb. Otherwise we could try and oversaturate it with HARMs, decoys etc. But yeah appreciate real life is a little more complex :)
@oldfashionedwrx3574 I'd say not fair if simulating a world power. Russia does not work well with its own troops, struggles to do any basic maneuver, will Intercept amd stumble over and start killing itself if it encounters dissent which is as frequent as having air support for them.
@@oldfashionedwrx3574 No quite correct on Track Via Missile (TVM). TVM (which is similar to Patriot TVM) means the SA-10 Flap Lid radar will still Track the target to provide guidance to a launched missile in flight. It is very difficult to defeat because the Tracking SA-10 radar compares it's own return radar data to what the missile sees during it's flyout. Having the two (or more) sources of data makes it very resistant to jamming. The SA-10 then provides a short burst of Continuous Wave illumination of the target for the missiles final terminal guidance for the last 1-2 seconds. The RWR in the aircraft will still show an SA-10 tracking you but your launch warning will come too late to do anything about it.
The periodic overlays of tacview really make this video great. As the viewer, it's often difficult to build a picture as to what is happening. You've solved that problem. I imagine it was a lot of extra work and I appreciate it!
I'm still fairly new to DCS myself and things can get a bit frustrating sometimes when learning. But its videos like these that really motivate me to learn more about the aircraft because who wouldn't want to fly awesome missions like this! Great video man, and great editing.
i love how you show not only the missions going perfect, but also not so happy endings.. that's just how it is: sometimes you don't get out as planned.. Will be a tough one for SAR though :P
Fantastic, I really enjoyed the overlays with the tac map/track and captions informing of actions taken and key words defined. Thank you for the time spent putting this together
@@CommandT Unless you enjoy cabbage, you should try to simulate a search and rescue mission next in this threat environment just so it would be hard enough.
Thanks! It’s using SRS and using the datalink secure comms in the F-18. You have to select the KY-58 radio to mode C and set the appropriate command for your push to talk using datalink comms in SRS. Sounds a bit complicated, but basically, just use SRS, even if it’s just through the usual box 1 or box 2 on the UFC.
Great video. Top quality. But why didn't you egress from the same route as the ingress? It looked much safer. Maybe it was to simulate the 'fog of war'?
Thanks! Yes, that was exactly the idea - fog of war. We were not supposed to know of the exact threats in the area around the front line apart from some predetermined positions of the SA-10, SA-19 and SA-6s
GOD this video was intense AF hahah Rly like your dedication to set realistic videos in dcs. Maybe now it could be nice to like be the russian and try to strike US / NATO high value target to have a bit of variety. I would love to see like an intercept of US/NATO planes with russian or chinese planes
Great briefing, great tactics, great comms, great flying, great camera ... what else 😁 ? That's a minimum 11/10 👍. But weren't you chewing more than you could bite. I understand the limited resources scenario, but it still feels like you lack some support softening the area before striking the big guy 🤔.
Thanks very much! Very kind! To be honest the lack of "softening" is entirely as a result of crappy DCS AI that do stupid things. I did initially have extra decoy trucks but then the SA-10 just used up all of it's ammo, and AI aircraft just have no concept of operating in SAM threat zones either. They just jettison everything and run. Or if you set the ROE to ignore threat then they just get blasted out the sky. I just haven't figured out a way of doing it unfortunately. For shorter range SAMs it's easier to create AI HARM shooters that shoot outside of the SAM kill zone and then go CAP or something. So I might try include more of those in another scenario, but generally it's very hard to make AI not do stupid things when operating in a high threat environment with SAM dotted everywhere, which is why I often prefer to not have them at all and pretend that they are in the area.
Dude, that low fly looks like exactly like in Ukraine air missions. Even the way you got inject and the sound of the jet passing above you when you got hit ARE IDENTICAL THE SAME AS REAL. I saw a thousend vídeos from the front in Ukraine, so I can easly say, this is the most accurate simulation of a real mission. Pretty good work you guys have done with this game. Take the fully potential
Did you use Skynet IADS for this mission? I'm just curious because, knowing vanilla DCS SAM AI, I expected that SA10 to just accurately shoot down all your HARMs after it was through with your TALDs. It's kinda BS to be honest. So much so that almost all of my recent Liberation SEAD ATOs are basically copy paste of the same Desert Storm Day 1 tactic of spamming TALDs until either the HARM guys get their mark or all the SAMs eventually run out of ammo. It was even dumber before the Hornets got TALDs. I used a shit ton of JSOWs lmao! 😂
No Skynet but I set trigger zones so that the SAMs only became activated within a certain range, effectively simulating a similar idea, with EWR radars being dotted in various locations. AS you'll see in the debrief video, at least 1 HARM hit the target, one missed, and 2 got shot down. So it sort of worked out reasonably unpredictable. But I agree, if you have 24 TALDs flying towards it, it will just stupidly waste all of it's ammo. Some serious AI limitations there :(
@@CommandT That's a nice way to make up for the game's shortcomings. I just wish sam radars acted like they should (i.e. turn off) whenever a HARM is in the vicinity but I guess it's hard to sell a feature like that when sams already have pinpoint accuracy to detect and reliably shootdown anything and everything that comes their way (even glidebombs that are supposed to be insanely difficult to spot on radar).
@@CommandT The Proportional Navigation used in DCS which governs the SAM missile fly outs is also incorrect. Most SAMS use a proportional LOS rate which uses a gain factor governing the proportional intercept rate. Unfortunately, you would easily lose against this system.
Depends entirely on how low you are prepared to fly and behind what cover. But yes I don’t think any real pilot would be attempting what we did. This is after all a game. So if you have a better way of defeating an SA-10 in DCS without going home and ordering a drone strike followed by some ATACMS, feel free to share it.
@@CommandT I'm just saying that the way advanced systems are modeled in DCS, they of course can be defeated. Like you said, it is just a game and the developers have no idea on how these threats really function. I find too many people think that what is modeled is somehow correct or true to life. The majority of these approaches are either impractical or impossible in real life.
