  • Replacing the toilet tank to bowl gasket because of leaks are rare, but toilet gaskets do dry out and crack over time that leads to water leakage on to the floor.
    How to Replace Tank-to-Bowl Gasket
    1a. Shut off the water.
    Hold the flush handle down to empty the tank.
    Sponge out the remaining water.
    1b. Remove the toilet tank.
    Disconnect the water supply hose from the tank.
    Unscrew the toilet tank-to-bowl bolt nuts.
    Lift the tank off the bowl and place on a flat surface.
    2. Remove the rubber gasket
    Slide off rubber gasket and bring to the store to match a replacement.
    3. Attach the new gasket
    Slide on the new gasket assuring the tapered side facing away from the tank.
    Move it around so it seals correctly.
    4. Replace the tank
    Set the toilet tank onto the bowl.
    Press down on the tank so the gasket seats properly.
    5. Tighten the toilet bolts
    Use new rubber tank washers.
    Insert the rubber washers in to the tank, then the bolts through the washers. Do not use metal washers inside the tank.
    From under the bowl, hand-tighten the bolts with another washer and nut.
    Tighten the toilet bolts alternately, first one side then the other until the tank doesn't wobble.
    The tank will still move some because the rubber gasket is not supportive or firm.
    NOTE: Don't over-tighten the toilet tank bolts to crack the porcelain.
    6. Reconnect the water supply hose to the fill valve
    Flush and check for leaks.

    Forgotten if I fixed mine years ago by replacing the gasket. Had the same problem again after replacing the broken bolts. Your video just confirmed what I suspected.

    You saved my day. I placed the tank without valve and water kept on coming upon flashing. Came to know the valve is for that purpose later.

    From what I've learned about solving toilet issues it seems there's almost no instance where you'd need to buy a new one.

      Could be, or there is a leak at the wax ring. Tape paper towels around the bowl halfway up to confirm the water comes from the tank.

    I was requested to change the flush valve at work and I had to reuse the old flush valve seals because they got a 3” kit. The tank mounting bolt nuts are pretty damn snug

    I have old toilets that have three screws/bolts … replacement kits I’ve seen have only two screws/bolts. Are most rubber seals the same size? Can I use the old screws/bolts?

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We sell those kits in both two bolt and three bolt packages. If the old bolts are the solid brass ones, of course you can reuse those, the hard part will be finding a nice rubber washer that fits them properly. The seal in the tank is the moneymaker, the washer and the nuts underneath only hold everything together.

    Can this seal cause bad odor from sceptic? It seems like it should be fresh water flow only.

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re correct only freshwater gets to this point. You’d have to go to the wax ring to get to the septic fumes.

      Tiding nut? Call Gilbert’s, 586-776-9532, ask for Daniel and he’ll sell and ship.

    I replaced the tank bolts and gasket but still leaking (while not flushing) and believe it's from the center gasket as I see droplets coming from there. Is it the flush valve that needs to be replaced now? I believe I tightened the wing nuts enough to secure gasket between tank to bowl. Been at this few days, hopefully this is the last stop for leakage!

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could be, you did get the metal washers out from inside the tank on the tank bolts, correct? Typically the inside gasket on a flush valve never goes bad however, sometimes when you rub it with your finger and black comes off on it, it’s starting to decompose.

    • @rogerh2694
      @rogerh2694 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrHardware1 Found out I had to tighten wing nuts which seals the gasket. With my set up, the regular nuts just tighten the bolts and need extra wing nuts to seal tank to bowl. Thanks.

    I like when he said “when it wears out” he did not mention that the seal in 99% is decomposed because of the water and he installed the same type of the seal to welcome you in his store)))

    I wonder if the tank-to-bowl gasket is standard for all toilets?

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, one size fits most toilets, but not all.

    • @Prebound_

      That particular gasket wouldn't be compatible with Briggs vacuum tanks. I've tried.

    Could a bad gasket cause condensation behind the water tank?

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A leaky tank that is constantly getting refilled with cold water is the cause of the condensation. The fact that your tank doesn’t hold water is because the flapper or whatever type gasket on your flush valve you have needs to be replaced.

      @MrHardware1 once the tank gets around half way full, is start leaking between the tank and bowl gasket, it is a brand new toilet, I don't see any cracks

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@crazycardcollectibles9678 all I can say is you gotta pull the tank and check the big nut that holds the flush valve to the tank and then make sure that nuts hold the tank to the bowl we’re done properly
