- The WDR BIG BAND feat. Andy Haderer with the tune "Ballad Of A Friend" (Composition / Arrangement: Peter Herbolzheimer). Produced under the musical direction of Jörg Achim Keller as part of the Personal Sound series (WDR FUNKHAUS / March 2021).
The name says it all when the WDR Big Band proclaims the motto "Personal Sounds" in its concert series. While the entire big band is the focus, each concert also features two personalities from the band. The two band members not only present themselves as soloists, but also help shape the entire program and appear as composers. In short: very individual musical portraits are drawn. In this edition of "Personal Sounds" it's (almost) all about the high and low brass, namely bass trombonist Mattis Cederberg and trumpeter and flugelhorn player Andy Haderer.

As I listen to this tune, I am carried to some play where I do not know. I played the Trumpet in my high school band in Nashville . I am lamenting somewhere but I can not tell you where.

I must add another comment. When I listen to this tune, I think about New York up around 178th or 186th around Columbia U. for some reason on a Sunday evening. Don’t ask, I cannot tell you why. The melody haunts me as I walk in the area.
