    As a metal head, we tend to forget that even the softer music like this can be heavy with just a simple beat

      I'm 13 and I love older music so much! It's so much better then what we have today with Taylor Swift and Harry Styles, Suicide boys etc. I feel like people back then and bands had so much more talent then today there are songs from today that are good but nothing compares to 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, even early 00s music! ❤

    Lewis just made the song up (according to an interview with him). His family used to hang out at the lake in Tyler Texas. Apparently, there was a real stalker in Tyler. Why does everything have to be VAMPIRES or Satan?? lol
    It's a good tune....great beat.

    • @TheOriginalDrakon
      @TheOriginalDrakon 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I have no idea where you got your information from but it's horrendously incorrect. Actually, Tyler is in east Texas and Possum Kingdom Lake (PK or Possum Kingdom to us Texans) is about 90 miles west of Ft. Worth which is nowhere near Tyler. Tyler and PK are about 240 miles apart. The song's origins lie in folklore from the band's native state of Texas. In the documentary "Dark Secrets: The Stories of Rubberneck" (which I own & yes, I did go back thru the documentary to check facts) , Lewis further elaborates that he intended "Possum Kingdom" to be a continuation of the story told in the song "I Burn". While he envisioned "I Burn" to be a story about cult members immolating themselves in order to ascend to a higher plane, "Possum Kingdom" was about one of the immolated people becoming "just smoke, and ...he goes to Possum Kingdom [Lake] and tries to find somebody to join him."

      TheOriginalDrakon If you read my comment you will see that I cited my source (just good basic research habits that I have always used in my professional and personal life). Where did you get yours? Hmmm..there's the cult theme again.
      What exactly do you think is inaccurate about what Lewis said?? He made the song up..get it? It's not intended to be FACTUAL. Actually, he laughs about how people always want to read some deep cult meaning into his songs....he emphasizes that it's just a simple story he made up. There is no hidden or deep meaning to it.

    • @TheOriginalDrakon
      @TheOriginalDrakon 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hika Shika Pfff you cited absolutely nothing. No reference of a magazine, radio station, tv show, podcast, etc. Anybody could say "oh, it was an interview". Gimme a break. I actually gave a source but evidently, you can't read what's right in front of your face. Also, you're clearly pathetic at your "professional career" if that's how you cite a source. You would be the laughingstock of any news agency if you went to the editor-in-chief or the head of a news channel saying "I cited the source" w/o giving a name of that source. Open your eyes and look again. I stated "I went back thru the documentary to check the facts" (there are numerous entries of this doc here on youtube). Lewis gave the statements in the documentary. That is FACTUAL ... I didn't say ANYTHING about the story in the song being factual, nor did I say anything about me doubting what Lewis said in this supposed interview that was NOT cited by ANYTHING. However, I doubt your words heavily b/c you only see what you want. Not what is actually written.

    • @maryannferencak3799
      @maryannferencak3799 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      TheOriginalDrakon
      Your source is Wikipedia (word for word). Wikipedia has a disclaimer that states that the information on its site is "contributed" by anyone who wants to post material. Furthermore, the "story" about this song that you cited states: "Note that the article needs additional citations for verification." That's because no one in their right mind would repeat anything they read on Wiki...it's not reliable.
      There is no need for you to get personal. You can read into this song anything you want. I really don't give a flip.Lewis thinks it's hilarious the way people like you read things into his songs and make things so damned complicated though. I have to agree.
      I was relaying information I read from MANY interview with Lewis and the group. Here are just a few:
      In a 1995 interview with RIP magazine, Toadies lead singer Todd Lewis, who wrote the song, said: "It's just a story I heard long ago; it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I just make up. I tend to do that. They dammed up this big river up there, and it's got all these spooky names like Hell's Gate. It's really cool."
      Lewis went on to say that there was a real stalker in Tyler, Texas who became a folk hero: "I was down there for Thanksgiving, and after the family got through talking about who died and who's got cancer and all those things that families talk about, they started talking about this guy who was peeping in windows and started breaking into people's houses. He'd go out of his way to be seen, and everyone is like armed to the teeth, and he's like tapping on windows. The whole family was freaked out about it."
      Interview with Dan Weiss (Radio.com)
      What was the creepiest thing you ever saw there?
      I couldn’t tell you that I saw anything specifically there, it’s just a really cool landscape with all sorts of weird nomenclature there…Hell’s Gate, Devil’s Island and all this weird shit. It just happened to be where I was when I wrote a bunch of songs.
      I’ve heard more rumors about this song than most hits of the era so would you mind telling me if the following are true or false?
      Let’s start with false. [laughs]
      The song is about a vampire.
      Nope.
      The song concerns a rape.
      Nope.
      Was the song inspired by a real person or real events?
      No.
      What else are you comfortable telling me about the song?
      Oh, I don’t mind. There’s actually a documentary that our guitar player Clark [Voegler]-he’s afilm editor, that’s what he does-he put together a bunch of footage, a bunch of interviews about it. When I write a character-especially back then-I’d write a character in a song and then have that character go through whatever I want them to do. I just made up the story, just wrote the song and had it tell a story. I’ve always liked story songs.
      What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever heard it’s “about”?
      Other than this conversation? [laughs]
      Haha.
      The biggest one is vampires. It was always the thing with vampires. I don’t know, I’ve heard all kinds of s-. That’s kind of the beauty of that whole record and a lot of songs I’ve written, people grab onto whatever they want to hear. Until that documentary I didn’t want to talk about it. Other people’s interpretations are more f-ed up and detailed than mine are.
      From a 1995 interview:
      Umbarger: 'Possum Kingdom' is a ghost story."
      Lewis: "Possum Kingdom is a lake. One of the ten best fishin' spots in the U.S."
      Umbarger: "It's not about vampires, even though we have a big underground vampire following in Florida."
      Lewis: "It's just a story I heard long ago;
      it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I
      just make up. I tend to do that."
