  • If you are curious about how Sony E-mount lenses perform on a Nikon Zf, this is the video for you! I tested the Zf with 14 different E-mount lenses as well as 3 Nikkor lenses. The results might surprise some!

      Are you shooting video or stills? For stills, they are nearly as good as native lenses, but for video they do lag behind in AF performance. Glad the adapter is working well for your situation!

    I've been adapting my Sony 50 1.2 GM and 35 1.4 GM to the ZF for the past few months at weddings and it's been pretty good. Not perfect, but good.

      You summed it up nicely, good, but not great. I actually think the 3rd party lenses from Sigma and Tamron work best because they do not really on in-camera corrections. In general, they build optically good lenses so you don't need software corrections.

      The moral of the story is to use native lenses on the proper body. It's fun to mess around, but the results will never be quite as good. I tried this with my old Nikkor lenses of the 1980s, attached to my Sony camera. Results were terrible. Chromatic aberration was off the chart. One can tell the old lenses are not suited for adaption to other manufacturers' bodies. Maybe its the digital sensor not suited for older lenses. I am waiting for results of using Nikkor lenses on my Nikon using very expensive film, damn prices are also off the chart, to see if I get the same results. I think it's best to use Nikkor lenses on old film based Nikons for best results. Anyway, it is fun but not what a professional will want to mess with in their profession.

      @@bondgabebond4907 I appreciate the Nikon ZF for its compatibility with my Sony lenses, and my nostalgia for Nikon plays a role. The ZF’s design reminds me of my film photography days. While I find Sony cameras technically impressive, I feel they lack a certain intangible quality. In other words, they lack “soul.” 😊

      What convinced me to choose the Nikon ZF was its compatibility with my Sony lenses. Having been a Nikon enthusiast during my early years as a photographer, Nikon has always held a special place in my heart. The design of the ZF, evoking memories of my film photography days, strongly appealed to me. While I greatly value my Sony G Master lenses and consider them superior to any other brand I've used extensively, my Sony camera, despite its technical excellence, lacks soul.

    I purchased the 40mm Sony G lens to see if it would work on my Nikon ZF, Z6Ii and Zfc, i also purchased an adapter that was designed with the electrical connections that was to be used to make this work. I found a TH-cam video that spoke about this adapter and it sounded as if all you had to do was attach the adapter to the lens, mount them on a Nikon ZF or any other Z series camera and you were in business. The results were anything but what was shown in the video. I tried using the adapter and 40mm Sony G lens on a ZF, Z6Ii and Zfc and the results were the same, when with i tuned the camera on i could see through the viewfinder, the camera was set to auto focus but the screen and viewfinder said that it was in manual focus and the lens F stop would not register, no matter how i mounted the lens and adapter to the camera body the results were the same. The adapter would lock in place on the camera body but the lens just twisted on the adapter and did not lock in place. I could twist the lens off of the adapter and the adapter would say on the camera body until i pressed the release button and twisted the adapter off,some one said that the firmware on the adapter might have to be updated, I felt that it the adapter was designed for a Sony lens to Nikon bodies it should have worked out of the box with at least one of the camera bodies that I tried using it on, in the end I purchased a Sony A7II that was heavily discontinued and now i use as a every day full frame camera setup, I also added the 20-70 f4 and the 24mm G lens that along with the 4omm is part of the three prime lenses that are very compact.

    Adapting my Tokina 11-18 F2.8 E mount lens from my Sony ZV-E10 on my Nikon Z30 with the Neewer ETZ. Autofocus is a little slow without eye detect sometimes but works amazing for APS-C. I think I'd upgrade the adapter down the line to try and maximize my AF speed but having more ultrawide options on a body that suits vlogging so well is a treat. Great for stills as well!

    Thanks for the review, really appreciated. I was contemplating getting a Sony 14mm f1.8 GM lens and adapting it on my Nikon Zf using the exact same adaptor, because there is no ultrawide prime lens for the Nikon Z mount at the moment. And, most importantly, the Sony 14mm f1.8 GM is the lens that any astro/landscape photographers would be salivating for, a high quality lens in a such small form factor.

    • @RandumbTech
      @RandumbTech  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you are shooting stills, should not be a problem at all. But if it's more for video, I'd recommend sticking with native lenses. The only thing that has prevented me from buying the 14 1.8 is the fact that there are no front filter threads. I have similar rear filters for my Sigma 14-24 and never use them because they are so inconvenient. But for astro you won't need them anyway, so may still make sense for your use case. Good luck!

      The lens is perfect fit for landscape but unfortunately, no so much for astrophotography. I tried it with Nikon Z camera for Milky Way shooting and found the lens, used with an adapter, performed poorly at the corners, just as some other reviewers on TH-cam pointed out. I gave it up.

    Glad I found this… Certainly outstanding information! I am currently on a Z6ii, and I am very happy with it, but, I feel like I should have stepped up the megapixel count. I’ve been looking at the Fuji and Hasselblad medium formats, but they each seem to have their own problems and let’s face it, neither of which is as ergonomic and, useful on the fly as the Nikon bodies.(maybe I’m biased because I’ve been using Nikons for 25 years.)
    I thought about swapping into the Z7 ii, but at this point… I feel like I should wait for the Z7iii.
    I definitely understand that it is not all about megapixels as I am looking at a couple of 24 x 36 canvases on my wall, shot on a D2H!😂 however, having the extra megapixel count to afford the ability for cropping to different format, ratios, or, really whatever the hell you want is what is driving me that direction.
    If you believe the rumors, they are projecting 60 megapixels for the next Z7. I figure, that should fit the bill!

      It's all about trade-offs. Typically, a lower MP camera will perform better in lowlight, but lack detail in larger prints. My own personal experience is that anything above 10MP is more than enough for most people so 24MP is certainly adequate. The real benefit of the higher MP camera is that you can shoot in crop mode and still retain tremendous detail. My favorite sensor is the 12MP one found in the A7Siii/FX3 - all the images feel very organic. The benefit of upgrading cameras at this point is in improvements in AF/screens/performance/etc. An image from a 3 year old Z6ii is still going to look fantastic today.

      AF is not an issue for stills unless you are doing demanding tasks like sports/wildlife (which I would NOT recommend the Zf for). LR does not automatically select the lens profile to apply so you will have to do that manually for each photo. Once that's done, the results for still are VERY good! If you are only planning to shoot Nikon, I'd probably opt for the native lenses, but if you split your time between Sony/Nikon, adapting your e-mount lenses is a cost effective solution.

    Turns out you can't have your cake and eat it too. I still think this is pretty cool, I adapted Canon EF to various mirrorless cameras over the years and never expected to have native autofocusing capabilities, however, when I was doing that, autofocus for video wasn't anywhere near as good as it is now and Canon EF lenses offer much better manual focusing than mirrorless lenses do. I can't imagine that camera brands are too enthused about an open mirrorless lens ecosystem, but maybe the adapters will get better somehow...
    And BTW, DaVinci Resolve has an auto-lens corrections toggle right in the edit page.

    Makes me wonder how much of these issues are down to the Megadap adapter specifically. I've read on a few forums that depending on the adapter you have you'll get varying amounts of vignetting for example, and some adapters only guarantee reliable autofocus using first party Sony lenses as well. That said, I'm probably gonna stay away from this Megadap adapter specifically, but I'd be curious to see if any other version is more reliable overall.

    • @RandumbTech
      @RandumbTech  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's possible that there is a better adapter out there, but it still will not allow for in-camera corrections. First party lenses are almost always going to perform best.

    • @BurneraccountXD69
      @BurneraccountXD69 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RandumbTech an equivalent native Z Mount lens all other things being equal would most likely preform better yes, but the idea it would need to be a first party lens specifically is a pretty Sony centric idea to be honest. Nikon doesn't impose the same restrictions Sony does for third party glass, but I digress.
      As I said, an equivalent Z Mount Lens would most likely preform better than a lens using any of these adapters, but that's the problem, it would need to an *equivalent* lens. There's no Z Mount 12-24mm f2.8 for example, so by default it's the best 12-24mm f2.8 lens for the Z Mount.
