- The viola version played here, outside of the transposition a fifth lower, is not altered from what many violinists do. (There exist viola versions which are arrangements and contain simplifications beyond what it standard on violin.) Played on a standard-sized (over 16") viola by Hiroshi Iizuka. Recorded in 2008 at Cellar Dweller Productions in North Plainfield, New Jersey; Larry Bentley, engineer. Remastered at Cellar Dweller Productions and rereleased in 2020 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Caprices. More:

Scott Slapin's viola playing has received critical acclaim in Fanfare, Strad, the American Record Guide, Mundo Clásico, and Musical Opinion, and his popular recital compositions have been performed by hundreds of viola players throughout the world. Scott and his wife, violist Tanya Solomon, have been performing together as the award-winning Slapin-Solomon Viola Duo for more than twenty years. Many of Scott's compositions can be heard on more than ten albums by the Slapin-Solomon Viola Duo, the Wistaria String Quartet, the Penn State Viola Ensemble, Viola Around the World, and the American Viola Quartet. Scott was the first person to record the complete set of J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas on viola; in addition to a rare viola recording of Paganini's 24 Caprices, he can be heard playing Bach, Paganini, and some of his own compositions on various soundtracks for film and TV. At eighteen Scott was one of the youngest graduates of the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He teaches viola, violin, and composition privately online and has reached students on five continents via Skype.

The first caprice unleashed certain feelings deep within that I haven’t experienced in a long time. It was so special I had to stop to rethink my life before continuing.
I am so impressed. These pieces are next to impossible for all of us mortal (i.e. amateur) violists, but they are lovely to listen to, played by the Master.

Totally awesome. Really exciting to hear these on a viola (and a *real* viola-- not one of those tiny things). If you don't mind me asking, which edition did you work off of?
Thank you! I started the Caprices while studying with Emanuel Vardi as a teenager, and at least back then there was only one edition for viola that was available (edited by Raby). Encouraged by Mr. Vardi, I collected other editions for violin and just read them down a fifth. (At one point I even had a copy of Paganini's handwritten version.)

Hi Josh, nice to see you here! I'm not familiar with any other viola versions, so I really can't say. I think the Raby is a good way to get started. By the time you're already familiar enough with the notes from that, reading down a fifth will become a lot easier (i.e. you'll be playing half from memory by that point), so that will open up a lot of violin versions.

The acoustics seem different for different caprices. Were they recorded in different places?
Hi Chris, thank you for your comments! They were all recorded in the same studio and in the same week (in 2008) over three nights. Who knows, maybe one of those nights I stood closer to the mic than the others! Best, Scott
