Music is all about tension and release, home and away. Microtonality, playing, and understandings like this are so exciting and mind-blowingly beautiful
I've once had a dream where I've heard almost this same microtonal synth sound, at least that's how i perceived it. I don't remember the context of the dream, but I was at the top of some mountain, where I and others were just filled with happiness and bliss, like we just won the game of the universe or something. I felt like I could be in that moment forever. To this day, I still remember that ending clearly, with the same microtonal music like in this video, but it was the most abstract/happy music I've ever heard, couldn't believe how my mind came up with it. I woke up to tears in my eyes. This composition brought me right back to that moment, thank you very much for sharing this with us!
the reason for this, is because Equal Temperament tuning makes everything slightly flat, but polychromatic music has the capability to properly tune every chord to itself to maintain consonance, just like a really good choir is capable of doing....or like Jacob Collier doing an acapella piece on a regular Tuesday hahah
Sounds like a relaxing, meditative synth cassette that sat on a shelf since the 70's in the best way. The fact of it having far more notes than the usual 12 note scale - and those notes being used well, when appropriate rather than throwing them in randomly - makes it that much more interesting and expressive.
This was kind of strange at first, but then I really started getting into it. There are a lot more small nuances in the harmonic changes simply because there are microtones involved. Great ear food!
With certainty, this is the best piece of music I've ever heard. This could be the last piece of music I hear in this life and it would feel like a proper conclusion. Thank you so much Dolores, for this timeless transmission!
I really like this piece because the progressions sound familiar but not identifiable... unlike Bohlen-Pierce music which sounds almost entirely alien (no less excellent, though)
This piece of music manages to sound both ancient and next level futuristic at the same time. Amazing. It is truly transcendental of 99.9% of the things I've heard in my life. It's such a lush combination of things I've truly never heard. Bravo, you've made my life better with this composition.
For the first time in 9 years of consuming youtube, i dont feel afraid of assuming that I am thankful for its existence. I still consider it to be one of the most powerfull double-edged weapons that ever existed.
Thank you for not being the last microtonal vid I ever clicked on, I was bout to give up after a dozen of so of just noise. A total pleasure without the pain
It's not that the other stuff is garbage, it's just so foreign. In order to appreciate them, you gotta start with stuff like this first. At least that's my hope.
It sounds as though a harmonica swallowed an accordion player, and then spent years cultivating a xanax dependency, as a coping mechanism for the resulting trauma.
The amazing thing about this for me is how human it sounds. Humans are so imperfect, and those microtonal shifts highlight for me a very human ‘analog’ and imperfect, unclean tonality
I don't think that's how musicians serious about microtonal harmony want to see what they're doing. You do get the use of microtonal inflections in Western harmony (say, some jazz, pop, but even certain classical pieces) as "imperfections" in a tone. Say, the blues note, for instance. But that's different because it relies on it being different from the norm.
@@ems7623 I don't necessarily mean imperfections, or human inflection. More like it almost makes 12 notes per octave sound digital and binary. The possibility of this microtonal 106 ET expands upon the idea of infinity between pitches when dealing with analog. If you compare a sampled, digital piece of audio, it has a finite resolution, you can only expand so far upon it. Analog sounds that you hear in real life have an infinite amount of space between them, we just don't have the technology to capture it all. If you watch Dolores' Ted Talk, she talks about this in regards to the air raid siren.
@@AdamDallas the twelve note octave is arbitrary to some degree. almost all music has "unclean, imperfect" tonality because they all use tempered systems of tuning. Any instrument with more than one octave uses a tempered tuning system - meaning there are slight deviations from the perfect ratios of third, fourth, fifth, etc. the only way to truly get rid of that atonality is to use a justly tempered system but that's almost impossible with all western music because you can't have perfectly tuned octaves and keep the other intervals perfectly tuned at the same time. It's all a compromise at the end of the day
Ha, absolutely. I think with that particular synth pad you could pull off just about any of the early Nintendo theme songs. You'd just have to play it staccato mostly. I'm curious if that's possible on that keyboard. It has to be, I'd think.
The same, because the intervals would be the same. The reason it sounds Russian/like the tetris theme is because it's based off a certain set of intervals in the Western music scale.
this was incredible; ive seen a few of your compositions and i love your ability to incorporate microtones in a way that's not totally displeasing if you understand how that feels for someone just beginning to delve into this type of music
The chord at 0:19 is BEAUTIFUL. The best I can transcribe it in equal temperament is like a C#63/Eb but still that chord doesn’t hit nearly the same as the original. It’s amazing how, although we are tuned to equal temperament (in our brains), we can still find emotional stimulation through pitches unknown to us. Sorta like trying alien food and enjoying it lol. Great composition dude!
truly amazing and mystical, through this music you take the listener to dimensions of consciousness ordinarily unnoticed. the music is mind expanding and multi dimensional. it's like i can see the colours behind the compositions, lines, planes, rotation, transformation. Some of the sonic structures remind me of the fact that perception is about perspective, an object can look totally different from the back compared to the front. When a chord is struck that has notes outside of our default musical setting the perspective shifts completely but we're still exploring the same object, only this is happening sonically. It's journey through a complete sonic landscape or like a process of audible alchemy, where the listener is transformed from lead to gold, experentially speaking. I really love this trip! At the end of all of it ones is transported back to every day reality but with a complete different mind set. Thanx so much for making this healing music, would love to hear more from you
Parallax is a great word. Its a word used to describe a feature in agate banding that causes an illusion of shadows contrasting depending at the angle and distance observed
I've finally reached a point where I find this song nostalgic, firsthand. This was the first microtonal piece I heard that actually sounded pleasant and consonant back in 2015/2016, and I instantly fell in love with the microtonal world.
La musica microtonal es la musica del futuro.. Se expande la musica tal cual la conocemos hoy dia a niveles inimaginables.. Un abanico de colores musicales y matizes para explorar y experimentar
There are some restrictions, by the way. I think a guitar divided for less than a quartertone will be extremely uncomfortable to play due to narrow space between frets. And there's one more problem for bass: it's extremely hard to maintain good equal division (required by lower tuning) while keeping scale in a reasonable range. Double bass and fretless guitars can be an option, but a fretted instrument is generally better in rock music.
Alexey Polevoy Progressive ROCK. He meant it would sound cool a mix of Rock creativism with Microtonal chords. Actually I'm quite interested in this new science. Would be great in my Jazz Neo-Prog Rock thing.
umrasangus That would be really great. An astounding way to bring Neo-prog to a whole different level. my idea was to use it to create a Space vibe...almost like Hawkwind with electronic keyboards (if you're familiar with them).
@@alexeypolevoybass what if you had a massive fretboard somehow controlling a smaller one mechanically? or some way to size things up Yes this sounds stupid and uninformed
A solution to the scale problem with microtonal bass and guitar would theoretically be making it multiscale, but it would require fretwork beyond anything we’ve seen yet.
Gorgeous. As many others have said, you have an amazing ear for making the microtonal elements sound pleasant and not grating. The chords are lush and beautiful.
You're the only one I've heard who can make really enjoyable microtonal music. All the others just sound like they're just playing random pitches just for the hell of it and for trying to sound "edgy" when it just sounds like crap
+nicolhaidi alot of it sounds too experimental, jarring or just "out of tune" because it's as if there's no thought for musical keys. of they just sound like an electronic version of asian microtonal music
You should look into Ivan Wyschnegradsky. He was a neo-Romanticist who wrote most of his music in heavy microtonal theory, and created some gorgeous works. I actually have a video of 50 minutes worth of his music on my channel. I find many composers that successfully use microtones, and don't just create ugly effects because it's "fun". You just gotta know where to look! I can point you to more composers if you want.
This is the sound I have been looking for in my synths. I can get these microtones on wind and string instruments, but electronic instruments have been too rigid until now. I have a lot of hope in MPE and the growing variety of microtonal/alternative controllers that blur the lines between keyboards and other instruments.
I'm a keyboard player and synth marketer, and I was in the mood for something dense and analog, and this absolutely fulfilled me. This is just the first video I've watched of yours, but I'm already subscribed, and I'll be bingeing on your videos for the rest of the week. Marvelous music!!
Thank you for producing one of the rare pieces of microtonal music which neither relies too heavily on 12-TET principles nor disregards the idea of having harmonic principles altogether (I think the below comments do justice to this!) Looking forward to hearing what come next. I know it's difficult to create coherent microtonal music as there just isn't a lot of tried and tested compositional material out there, so thank you and well done for contributing to forging the path! I really hope that h-pi instruments starts making the keyboards again, I was going to buy one once I got a job after university and had the money :'(
Almost 30 years in classical music, this has opened my eyes to the possibility of continued musical evolution. Great vid and great playing!

Like when the music and every detail of life happening at once happen simultaneously and in sync...?

Dude, the progression from 1:14-1:41, the way Dolores create tension and resolution with a mixture of microtonalism and bitonalism is ethereal!
it really reminds me of a tv show

The chord changes between 1:07 and 1:15 are absolutely sick. Then that slide at 1:20. hnnnnng.
Agreed, that section really tickled my musical appreciation gland.
@Multorum Unum I love this music so much because now my perfect pitch isn't useful to decipher the notes leaving them to be a complete mystery 😁
It felt like my brain orgasmed in reverse when they hit that slide
