It had an older audience so idols were generally looked down on but Mamamoo won over the audience. They were the first female idol group to win on the show and the first group to win more than once. They appeared 14 times (plus Solar appeared solo once) and won 3 times. Watch the appearances for your enjoyment but reactions will be blocked. However the Medley is a concert clip from 2017 and is safe to react to. Hwasa does use a lot of vocal color, but her raspiness is emphasized here becaus she was fighting a cold. People sometimes don't believe they are live becaus they are so perfect on stage. In fact they generally are even better live than the recording.
Every group has a main vocalist or two. Some, not all of the main vocalists in other groups are vocal peers to these four. All four Mamamoo members, including Moonbyul, would be the main or at least lead vocalist in any other group. Most groups emphasize dance and have main dancers who are often weaker singers and that's OK if that's what they want to showcase. Mamamoo uses dance to complete and enhance their musical performance. They often deviate from the set choreography to surprise the audience or one another. That's part of their charm on stage. Because of this, anti-fans claim they can't dance. They did all of their own choreography for the first several years and Hwasa, who is considered their weakest dancer, won a MAMA award for best solo dance for Maria, against other nominees noted for being great dancers.
Plus, Moonbyul is their weakest singer and she won a singing competition with other rappers, in such convincing fashion that the judges thought she was the lead singer.
New subscriber here, loved this reaction! If you want to get to know them better by watching a guide you should react to ‘INTRODUCING MAMAMOO!’ part 1 & 2. It was originally on a channel called Purple Hawke but from what i’ve heard they took the videos down because they received unnecessary hate. However, there is a re-upload of the guide on a channel called ‘Mooffin’. The guide is split into two parts (Solar and Moonbyul in part one, Wheein and Hwasa in part two) In my opinion its the best guide i’ve seen for Mamamoo, may be a little bit dated but if so there would only be a tiny bit of information missing (It is 100% the best guide i’ve seen for them and it’s SO well made). The guide goes into detail about the members personalities and talents, it’s definitely a lot of fun too! I’ve liked this group for a while now so it’s always nice to see someone discover them! They are definitely THE girl group vocalists of 3rd gen kpop! (Also fun fact, Hwasa was actually sick when they were on killing voice! Just proves what an amazing vocalist she is lol)

I saw a comparison of Solar(power belter) singing her But I song live at a radio show, and the MV next to it with a sound editor and it was nearly exactly the same. They are this good because they practice a lot, even practice things like power belts off a pole(see solar despacito) or exercising, doing lunges and stuff so they can sing that perfectly while doing choreo. When you hear I Miss You, Paint Me, Save me, where are we now, angel, and more ballads you will love it. If you really want to cry, Love you too, specifically the moosical performance and Solar's gamsung project 14 songs and most will cause tears. Incidentally Wheein is about to drop a new solo ballad in a week or so. There is a reason they are considered the gold standard for live vocalists.
No, they're actually better live because they don't hold back. The studio versions are tamed down. Edit to add: I've watched a lot of their behind the scenes videos. In one of them, Hwasa was recording a new song. She did one take, straight through, and the producer said to her, I don't even know why I'm here, it was that perfect.

All non-Koreans speakers were in the same boat at first. 😊 Here are some tips and info about their names and some common mistakes to avoid. Solar's stage name combines a play on "sun" in her real name Kim Yongsun with the notes of the solfege (do re mi fa So La ti do). Solar is an English word so say it like you usually do. You'll hear some people say So La, which is how her stage name is written in Korean, but if she wanted i-fans to call her So La she would have spelled it that way. She clearly wants us to associate her with the Sun and since she's a ray of sunshine that's only appropriate. Some folks say Solar with a broad stress on the 2nd syllable but that sounds affected to me, like they're trying to make a normal English word sound foreign or fancy. You're doing great with Moonbyul. The sequence of sounds in byul isn't used in English so it's not easy for us but your instinct is correct - there's no additional vowel sound between the B and Y. Typical mistakes are "Bye-yul" or "Bee-yul" but you're not doing that so good for you. It'll come naturally with a bit more practice. Byul means star and Moonbyul also goes by Moonstar so you can call her that if you want. Wheein is basically exactly how it looks - Whee + In.
