Superb rendition. The beginning captures the clownish goofiness of Kefka, then as the piece continues it sounds more manic and evil. Too many renditions try to sound epic right from the start.

+Shadow Zylo Right? No frills, no convoluted back story, nothing to try and force the player to feel pity for him. Kefka just wanted to watch the world burn...and add some more fuel to the fire while he was at it.
Also, unlike a fair number of the others, Kefka won. Sure, they came back and stopped him in the end, but the World of Ruin stands as testament to his victory.

This is literally the only game remix/remaster I've ever heard where both oompa and marching drums ACTUALLY WORKS. I can picture an ENTIRE ARMY of evil clown soldiers marching to this! ^_^

The funniest thing is, I have heard this song performed in the Character Medley from the Distant Worlds III Album and while what they did was good, think this remix captures the essence of the character. I especially love how the song is playful and chaotic, but that bass line just pushes the fact that you should dread how off in the head this character is. I also like the timpani buildup leading to the ritard and ending. Very well done sir.
+moogle847 Thank you! I just listened to that version and it sounds great! I agree with you though that it doesn't really capture the feeling of the original. I think it's because most orchestrators prioritize giving a piece a fresh and interesting sound over remaining faithful to the original. This also gives them a chance to show off their skills and gives everyone in the orchestra a chance to play. What I do is much simpler and probably shouldn't be called orchestration, but my goal is almost always to capture the original sound/feeling.

I really like how your orchestration combines Kefka's sneakiness, mischievousness, but powerful and threatening presence. A lot of other arrangers seem to not capture the original intent of the music in their remakes, which is (I feel) easier to run into when arranging 8 bit/16 bit music.

I think a lot of arrangers want to add their own signature to their work and they tend to make dramatic changes to the instrumentation and dynamics. I sometimes go a little overboard too, but for an iconic theme like this, I try to keep it as conservative as possible.

All of your orchestral arrangements are amazing. This is amazing. I wonder if you might dabble in Xenogears eventually. I think the instrument samples in that game could still be enhanced by you. Not quite as much as the SNES songs, but still! Or.. perhaps Breath of Fire 2!

He is.. his development happens as you progress through the game. We see him grow in power and how it effects him. Apparently Square focused more on present tense than past based.
I used to wonder why my friend uses this theme for my villain Kaiser Now I wonder more since kefla was a villain who went from a (whose this smuck) to the most threatening and powerful villain of the game..... Meanwhile kaiser went from a guy we take seriously to mostly a joke Their complete opposites... Sorry for this comment

+Alex K That's right! I decided to add a snare hit for each cymbal hit, and while I was at it, I lined up the snare rolls with the long contrabass notes. In hindsight, I'm not sure whether or not this was a good choice, but I don't think it makes a big difference. Anyway, if I don't like it later, I'll try the original rhythm when I make the next version.
