Letters are just instruments, my friend, which are used to convey ideas. It's not the random shapes that matter, but the meanings hidden behind them. So why would it be an insult to help people who can't read Cyrillic (which is a whole lot of the world population, by the way) sing along this beautiful song?
So I have to repeat again, it is not the *random* shapes that matter - Russian language (or other Slavic languages using Cyrillic script, for that matter) could very well end up using some other alphabet, so please don't try to "sanctify" it.
To add, Cyrillic alphabet actually arrived to the Slavic lands after Christianity, and was invented by two *Christian* brothers (who were *hermits*, no less, and were possibly of Greek origin). Unlike many national alphabets (such as Futhark/Futhorc or Turkic & Magyar runes), it has no associations with paganism or deep past. Furthermore, some of its letters were invented or re-shaped during the reign of Lenin.
Lenin also removed some letters from the language, but no other changes were made. At least take the Church Slavonic language with its phonetics and writing
Покойся с миром, Родослав...
