    The title of "No One Lives Under the Lighthouse" is genius too because it lets you know iinstantly that someone absolutely does, so you're instantly filled with this tension and dread of when it's gonna culminate.

      I adore the jumpscare/final moments, the way the thing that’s chasing you sounds against the floor and walls, like it’s got hundreds of limbs scrambling towards you, it’s pure art, absolutely brilliant game that doesn’t get enough love

    It's not entirely the same, but the Portal games do an excellent job of showing you an empty, lonely world. Portal 1 especially leans in on the lonely part, but Portal 2 dives into the history of Aperture and really gives that sense of a dead, decaying world despite the fact there is actually a decent amount of dialogue.

    • @ГеоргийЛобанов-н7б
      @ГеоргийЛобанов-н7б 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +18

      Its isnt just Portal, but Half-Life 2 as well. If you pay attention to your surroundings, you understand the Earth is pretty much dead. All life that still there are prolong trough artificial means, and all that is left is few humans, synths, xen flora infestation and empty wastlelands. You cant shake off the meloncholic feeling that the fight is meaningless, because its already too late for Earth. All you do is that you try to prolong humankind existance at least for a day or two. And because fighting is all that is left to do.

    I've been thinking of a game that does the dying world trope better than any I've played since: King's Field: The Ancient City. The opening cinematic and intro makes it clear how dead and dying the world is. You meet widowed, sick and famished characters on the surface before descending into the game's main dungeon. The dungeon itself is very difficult, dark and has very few NPCs, but an interesting subversion occurs: If you find certain hidden paths, they lead back to the surface which is usually a small spring or forested area. It's an occasional reminder of what the world is losing and what you're fighting to preserve. A nice respite in an otherwise dark and arduous journey.
    The game was made by the same developers as the Souls series which is hugely popular now, but in my opinion, the dying atmosphere was at it's peak in this game. It's one thing to meet crestfallen characters, see undead soldiers or fight uncaring gods, but the sadness just hits different when you meet a dying mother and her daughter or when you find a small area whose only purpose is to give you some temporary peace.

We always know where we are and usually have an easy way to get back home. It makes sense that many people would be attracted to games built around exactly the opposite ideas.

    This was a great video showing lots of games with their own unique dying worlds. But, one game that you’ve failed to mention in this video and the original dying world’s video is SOMA. If you don’t know of SOMA I heavily suggest you to play the game. I don’t want to say much about the game because it is best to experience everything new in your own play-through, not through spoilers. I will say that it is a sci-fi horror game centered around a dying world that questions what it means to be human through its setting, characters, atmosphere, and especially the story. Please do play the game if you haven’t heard of it. Also thank you for these amazing videos.

    If you ever make a part three, consider The Final Station. The train ride through the crumbling world has such intense subtle background horror along with a brutal ending. For those that haven’t played it, it’s a fantastic game that I couldn’t recommend more.

    Great work once more. Next I would love to see more of these worlds and one I would really love to see in these videos is the world of the original stalker game (SoC). That would also be quite timely with their new release, which is ok, but to me the originals are just so hauntingly beautiful and desolate. The atmosphere is one of a kind to this day.

    Lunacid might be a great addition to the series. It’s also set in dying world, although you’re confined to The Great Well. It has interesting characters, lore, and greatly inspired by Kings Field.
