The ceremony is the symbol of the infant Jesus as the king of the nation even as a child. And a child is the best symbol of a Christian. Like a child. we must have a pure mind and heart.
@moshi6632While technically your reply is correct,God didn't restrain us from creating statues and icons. The only thing he doesn't want us to do is worship the statues instead of him alone. While you might think the hail Mary is idolatry,It isnt. Its a prayer dedicated to mary,And to honour mary,Not to worship her as god.

To the iconoclastic Protestants/Evangelicals out there, it has been decreed by the 7th Ecumenical Council, the 2nd Council of Nicaea in AD 787, that the veneration and honouring of icons and statues of saints and other representations of the holy faith are not heretical so long as worship alone is granted and given only to the most holy Trinity. This decree is held and upholded by the Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.
I read about the Hubo (undressing) ceremony only today. I didn’t know it was a thing. For me, this is the most symbolically rich part of the Sinulog ceremonies. We Catholics venerate many images of Christ. The most common are Christ crucified and suffering, Christ resurrected and reigning in glory, Christ as a humble infant. However the Sto Niño is unique because he combines Christ’s humility as man and Christ’s glory as God (since He is depicted as a child dressed as a King). The hubo seems to remind me of Philippians 2:6-11. “He emptied Himself being born in the form of a slave, taking the likeness of man… because of this God greatly exalted Him” corresponding to the undressing then the redressing.
Replica Mayor as per the Basilica Terms... There are roughly 20 identical replicas of the original in which 2 or 3 of them are displayed on the altars...
