    A note for your last clip. The reason the new(ish) changes don't work as they should is because it's a half baked attempt of Dutch style rules. Where we've not actually implemented the infrastructure that makes those rules so much safer, such as; continuous pavements, tighter turning junctions, padestrian priority traffic lights, traffic claiming, and the ilk. We need infrastructure change along with the rules.

      Over 60 cyclists deaths a year occur in Netherlands where a cycle lane interacts with a motor lane which is usually at a perpendicular angle. There are over 200 annual deaths in NL, double that of the UK despite Four times less motor traffic and all that segregation.
      Segregation does not work and has increased deaths in netherlands whilst UK cycling deaths have gone down with no segregation.

      They absolutely work. The other day I was cycling and I was slowing down to give way to pedestrians who were about to cross a side road I was turning into and lo and behold, they just stepped straight out without looking! The number of pedestrians who do this is shocking. If it weren't for these new updates, I might not have given way and I might have hit them.

    • @ynotnilknarf39
      @ynotnilknarf39 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Segregation doesn't work, it's crap (is insanel expensive and takes more than half a century to even get some in, see Netherlands) it pushes people on bikes to the periphery such that they have more difficult journeys that are more circuitous and lengthier, you're exposed more at perpendicular angles which is the singular biggest killing zone in netherlands for those riding bikes. That's not opinion, that's the Dutch govs own stats, 60+ people riding bikes get killed when a bike lane crosses a motor lane, More than double the deaths of people on bikes compared to Uk despite us having 4 times more motor traffic and the Dutch having all that segregation. Also ccling modal share has been dropping (despite the manipulation of data to state otherwise). Car sales have increased significantl in NL and no-one wants to talk about these huge elephants and that segregation doesn't change shit, onl make matters more dangerous!
      As someone from a very flat city that as of 1989 had a 22% modal share of people riding to work and low car use/ownership, it's not segregated lanes that change outcomes (regards safety) or entice children and adults alike to cycle.

    The last clip, people don’t know or don’t care about that specific part of the Highway Code. There was next to no information put out about it unless you avidly watch the news or read the code. The amount of times I’ve had someone almost rear-end me or angrily honk the horn while I’m allowing someone to cross in that situation is ridiculous.

      Keep saying it. Safety rules and Laws that dictate what people ‘SHOULD’ do are always doomed to failure.[because they make no allowance for what people do because of natural human behaviour]
      Good safety rules allow for human nature and protect you from what people actually do when they are confused, ignorant, incompetent or just plain stupid.
      The simple act of saying “don’t do this”, or making something illegal doesn’t stop it from happening.

At 10:29, the delivery vehicle begins to emerge from your right, and you press your horn briefly to warn them of your presence. That junction at the end is a prime candidate to have a zebra crossing installed at the drop kerb just prior to the junction. While every driver should be looking out for everyone, that particular scenario with a two lane road *and* two junctions emerging close together is very high risk and I doubt many drivers would be thinking about pedestrians crossing but instead thinking more about getting to the junction before someone pulls out, or pulling out before someone else comes along the road
    This one needs additional traffic management to keep everyone safe in my opinion 👍

    The very last clip at around 12:20, absolutely spot on. The authorities really need to have a massive publicity campaign to make folks aware of the "new" rules...which aren't so new now! From my own observations, very few drivers follow these new rules and it really hasn't made much difference at all. To the extent that when they do and allow me to cross, I actually give them a big "thumbs up", a nod and mime "Thank You" as if to say "You are a very rare breed of driver that actually understands the rules".

    • @letter1014
      @letter1014 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And that's the thing, if we don't all know the rules it leads to conflict and confusion. Some pedestrians assume priority and if the driver is on the phone or speeding, it can end in tragedy.
      At the end of the day, it is a 'should' not a 'must' which arguably make it even more confusing.

But when in a similar situation I suggest going in to 'self preservation' mode and checking that all vehicles coming towards the crossing look like they are slowing down. For your own well being don't assume because you have the green light it is safe & proper to proceed. As you have found too many road users aren't or don't want to pay attention to others!!

    • @jakerockznoodles
      @jakerockznoodles ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@malcolm6951 Unfortunately, the reason many roads have these crossings in the first place is because they're at places where it's unreasonable to expect people crossing to observe and react in time.
      It's the same with Stop signs. People treat them like standard give way markings when the reason you're ordered to stop is that the kinds of checks that you do at a give way aren't sufficient to get a proper idea of the hazards.
      No matter how well you try to preserve yourself, you can't ever account for everything. That's why we have traffic controlled junctions and stop signs in the first place.

      Managing anger on the road goes both ways. If people drove properly to begin with, we wouldn't have anger. We shouldn't have to be dealing with anger issues, but drivers driving improperly make that very difficult. I don't take kindly to selfish, aggressive, distracted or careless drivers, and I really don't see that ever changing. I just have a low tolerance for bad behavior.

      @@BadDriversOfNapa I cannot relate to that sentiment enough bud really well put! (on and off the road as well)
      but for me I can’t sustain the level of stress “solving” other peoples driving with anger.
      the easiest thing to change is the way I create or react to situations. I’m allowing them to drive badly whilst I accommodate them and improve my own driving. I naturally have a high awareness of traffic and as a biker definitely have to concentrate as much as I can and I might as well use that for good by reading peoples mistakes and making it a “non event” as Ashley Neal would say.
      I would add I’m finding the transition difficult but I’m enjoying The results of being less stressed and obviously safer on the road

    • @BadDriversOfNapa
      @BadDriversOfNapa ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MAJ0RMEL0DY I like Ashley's motto of _'Make it a non event'_ . Very smart and wise advice, however, not everyone chooses to let things slide. And I see no issue with people who choose to call out other's mistakes. As a driving instructor, Ashley has a duty to err on the side of extreme caution when it comes to the potential of escalating people's mistakes into road rage by honking or shouting at drivers who made a mistake. He'd be incurring liability for encouraging people to do that, so he encourages people not to react at all to other people's mistakes and to just focus on their own driving. Nothing wrong with taking that route and it is the safest.
      However, by taking the passive approach and making something a 'non event', that may be true for the moment, but if the person didn't realize they made a mistake, they're certainly going to repeat the same mistake if they don't get honked at or told. What may be a non event now, may very well become an event later for someone else. So I choose to nip it in the bud and use my horn to communicate to other drivers their mistakes. Ashley would strongly disapprove, but he has to because of his being a driving instructor.

    The smoking/revving pickup at the start is probably a diesel engine runaway. Basically, if an alternative source of fuel occurs - e.g. oil leaking into the air-intake - then there's no easy way to stop a diesel engine in that situation. Either wait for the alternative source of fuel to run out, or else suffocate the engine by stuffing something into the air-intake are about the only options.

      that is an issue that I, as a yank, see with the british doctrine of defining multiple different species of crossing. in the US, we have a "crosswalk" and then we have crosswalk signals. the crosswalk exists outside any signal apparatus, so it can be placed anywhere it is beneficial. (though by definition, an implied pedestrian crossing exists at every junction)

    • @wr2899
      @wr2899 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kenbrown2808it’s not really an issue, there are a few types of crossings and everyone knows what the script is with them. Zebra crossings are cheaper for the council and often used where the pelican (light controlled) crossing wouldn’t be suitable.
      American roads are generally big and straight from what I’ve seen. British roads vary but many are very tight with lots of bends. There is a zebra crossing near me that wouldn’t be suitable for traffic lights due to space and how the road bends around. You can see the crossing from far enough up the road from the bend however due to the angle, traffic lights wouldnt actually be visible until you are quite close and not all drivers would slow in anticipation. if that makes sense.
      Plus the speed limit is 20mph and traffic generally low so having to wait for lights would likely discourage people from using the crossing because it would probably be quicker and low risk just to cross. It’s more for elderly/disabled who might take longer to cross and safer for children who may not be as aware when crossing so it helps protects them because drivers are expecting it.

      @wr2899 point being, in my state, if you're at a junction, it's a crossing. If motorists have trouble with the concept, the city, county, or state can paint it in. If it's still an issue, they can apply for permission to put in one or another type of signal, but it is still a crossing.

    That first clip is a classic case of a runaway diesel. There's either an issue with the piston rings or the turbo and the engine is burning engine oil instead of diesel. Switching the ignition off won't stop it. If it's a manual, stick it in a high gear with the brake fully on and dump the clutch, it's the only way you can realistically stop one if you're on the side of the road. If you have an automatic diesel, there's not much you can do other than sit there and wait for the engine to seize up.

    It was great to see you be nice Ashley and helped those people out with pushing that passenger van 2:30. It's nice to be nice 😃. I hear people always say it's not worth the risk to help people out, because you don't know what could happen, but in most cases I believe it's good to help. Also, about what you said about cycling twitter, I believe the horn use was a life saver. Oh, and speaking of twitter, love your Ford Focus as a new logo. I also believe the DVSA should be doing more to help people out at junctions. Maybe it's time for more zebra crossings at junctions too.

    In the opening clip, I think that may have been a runaway diesel. Diesel engines don't have a throttle valve, so if they receive an uncontrolled fuel source (eg. an oil leak from a broken turbocharger), they will just run until that fuel source is removed, or you find a way to starve it of air. In most cases, when the fuel source is the engine oil, it'll run until the oil gets low enough to seize the bearings - and it'll make those huge clouds of smoke in the process.

    At 10:00, I would have done exactly as you. Wait behind the line at the green light as there wasn't sufficient space to clear the crossing. This is why it also pays to keep your distance in slow moving traffic, so that you can easily make this sort of decision and not get yourself trapped. So many drivers just follow the tail of the vehicle in front and don't think about this sort of situation. As for the white BMW SUV jumping the red light and cheating it's way through the traffic, words fail me!

    @ 7:20 According to the Highway Code rule 112:
    "The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn
    while stationary on the road
    when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am
    except when another road user poses a danger."
    I think the Highway Code takes precedence over Twitter.
    In this instance Ashely was not moving but the van driver DID pose a danger - not to Ashley perhaps but it does not specify that the other road user must pose a danger to the one sounding the horn.
    I also tend to use my horn to gently warn cyclists of my presence because they seem to be oblivious of other road users.

    At around 11:00 re "Age gets to us all and it's going to happen to me and you". I often think about that Ash and it's one reason why my Mum and I like to keep busy attending all these events. I'm a fair bit older than you Ash, so it's "going to happen" to me somewhat earlier. I do hope I will be able to continue driving in an alert and safe fashion well into my senior years and I do try and lead a healthy lifestyle. In a way, I also consider myself "lucky" to have had cataracts at an early age and had the surgery to have them removed back in Oct 2014, two weeks apart for each eye, back in Vancouver. I have since enjoyed 6/6 vision in each eye without contact lenses or glasses despite being at -14 dioptres of myopia. Of course now, my "prescription lenses" are inside my eyes.
    I'm also lucky I have a Mum who is relatively healthy and can do all these trips with me. If not, I would not make these trips on my own and leave her at home alone. She is 25 years my senior btw. As you may recall, she did have a medical episode at the British Motor Show in Farnborough earlier this year and was taken by ambulance to the nearest A&E where we spent 8 hours for her to have various tests and be given the all clear. Likely to have been acid reflux and was in no way cardiac related. Fingers crossed that was a one off. She does get tired with all these trips though, especially bearing in mind that many folks in their 30s would find them tiring!
    We have many trips planned in the near future and beyond, so very much hope that age doesn't catch up with us too much!

    It’s nice to be nice, but I would be interested to know what the defence is for the offence of driving on the footway at 2’24”. The road appears wide enough to park at the kerb (and is, in any case, already obstructed by the broken down vehicle).
    If the Focus has got the L-box on, you’re reinforcing bad parking by doing so; conversely, by parking at the kerb you would highlight that the parked van is parked unlawfully.
    Otherwise, I applaud the effort.
    (Of course, I’ve come across cars/taxis where that’s just how they park to let passengers on/off, and sod anybody who’s inconvenienced by it. Got to risk-assess any approach to make sure you can handle the potential escalation.)

    If your car breaks down in a dodgy place, you can usually move it a good few yards with the starter motor, assuming it's not a battery issue. Just put the car in gear, clutch up and start the car, then move and steer to a safer spot. Shouldn't do any damage the starter motor is doing all the work and you don't even have to get out of the car.

    • @smilerbob
      @smilerbob ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a particular exit from a smaller but extremely busy roundabout near me. 2 lanes exit and I would never give way to a pedestrian there unless it was at a time when no other road users were about or if they proceeded to cross. I’m always ready to stop but I never feel it’s safe too. I’m not concerned about drivers hitting me from behind I can’t manage that with my speed. The problem is the 2 lanes quickly merge to 1 and others treat it as a drag race. If I stop I feel that a pedestrian may then cross when the other lane isn’t. To be honest the rest of the junctions on the roundabout have pedestrian controlled lights so if I was walking I’d just go round the long way. It’s the sort of situation where doing the right thing raises the risk to the pedestrian massively

If they don't, it's just talking into the void, and I've found this is true at work, with friends or SO's. There's no point in arguing "but I told them" if they aren't listening - if you don't get a response, assume that events will play out the same as if you didn't talk at all.

    Hi Ash, what car is this you’re teaching in?

    Recently I was driving home from work and after a short while went to look in my left mirror to realise I couldn't see in it because it was folded in. I therefore adjusted my driving to compensate until I could pull over and sort it. Turns out my car had been crashed into whilst parked, causing a dent in the door and the mirror to be pushed in. Needless to say, I was raging!

    Last clip.....agree DVSA needs to extract a digit rather quickly. What about an on line Highway Code learning course? Need to take and complete it successfully, say, with 12 months otherwise your driving licence is suspended. I suspect that could well focus a few minds!!

    At around 6:44 with folks on the main road cutting the corner when turning right into the minor road you want to turn right out of. This is one reason why I put a fair amount of emphasis on an early look left to observe if this is about to happen as I creep up to the Give Way line.

    There's times I try to press the horn multiple times but it just don't work lol
    Need to put too much effort into pressing it

    Only reason cyclists on twitter would give out about you beeping the horn there would be if they were aiming to go head over heels over the bonnet of the crossing car and you cost them their content.

    1:06 Yellow Nissan seems to do a good job here, allowing the cammer to proceed past their own parked cars before moving further forwards.
    But then gets insulted, laughed at, and their driving posted on the internet as an example of a driving failure.

    5:12 when I was doing DAS motorcycle training, slowing to let a vehicle out of a side road and delaying traffic behind you would have been a fail. What's changed?

      Standards of driving.
      Surely as a biker you always have your brakes covered and are checking for possible escape routes when you approach such scenarios? If no-one is 2cm from your rear plate, it is far easier and safer for you to do as Ashley did.
      The law may well say the lorry gives way but that does not mean to say he will. Indeed, I find many larger vehicle drivers use their might to force out. I am not always unsympathetic, as they rarely have the acceleration to make the move cleanly in busy times.
      I would also presume on the test you were expected to show you were, as above, aware of the potential dangers. So blasting past and claiming your right would not have been appreciated.

      @@eddieingalls534 none of your boring stream of drivel answers my question. The DSA examiners here would have failed a student who slowed traffic on a major road to allow someone out.
      What's changed?

      Two lanes which then become one, so merge in turn, and it wasn't the Kia's turn. Didn't you notice the road markings indicating the right lane to merge. I get the feeling that YOU would have barged past because you think you're in the right, and the emoji doesn't make it jokey or sarcastic!
