    The last clip, people don’t know or don’t care about that specific part of the Highway Code. There was next to no information put out about it unless you avidly watch the news or read the code. The amount of times I’ve had someone almost rear-end me or angrily honk the horn while I’m allowing someone to cross in that situation is ridiculous.

      Keep saying it. Safety rules and Laws that dictate what people ‘SHOULD’ do are always doomed to failure.[because they make no allowance for what people do because of natural human behaviour]
      Good safety rules allow for human nature and protect you from what people actually do when they are confused, ignorant, incompetent or just plain stupid.
      The simple act of saying “don’t do this”, or making something illegal doesn’t stop it from happening.

    That junction at the end is a prime candidate to have a zebra crossing installed at the drop kerb just prior to the junction. While every driver should be looking out for everyone, that particular scenario with a two lane road *and* two junctions emerging close together is very high risk and I doubt many drivers would be thinking about pedestrians crossing but instead thinking more about getting to the junction before someone pulls out, or pulling out before someone else comes along the road
    This one needs additional traffic management to keep everyone safe in my opinion 👍

    Hi Ashley, I wanted to point out a fault on your part in one of these clips. At 10:29, the delivery vehicle begins to emerge from your right, and you press your horn briefly to warn them of your presence. From watching other driving fail clips on TH-cam, I've learned that you are actually supposed to hold your horn down continuously until you arrive at your destination. 😉 Keep up the good work

    The smoking/revving pickup at the start is probably a diesel engine runaway. Basically, if an alternative source of fuel occurs - e.g. oil leaking into the air-intake - then there's no easy way to stop a diesel engine in that situation. Either wait for the alternative source of fuel to run out, or else suffocate the engine by stuffing something into the air-intake are about the only options.

      Managing anger on the road goes both ways. If people drove properly to begin with, we wouldn't have anger. We shouldn't have to be dealing with anger issues, but drivers driving improperly make that very difficult. I don't take kindly to selfish, aggressive, distracted or careless drivers, and I really don't see that ever changing. I just have a low tolerance for bad behavior.

    • @MAJ0RMEL0DY
      @MAJ0RMEL0DY 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BadDriversOfNapa I cannot relate to that sentiment enough bud really well put! (on and off the road as well)
      but for me I can’t sustain the level of stress “solving” other peoples driving with anger.
      the easiest thing to change is the way I create or react to situations. I’m allowing them to drive badly whilst I accommodate them and improve my own driving. I naturally have a high awareness of traffic and as a biker definitely have to concentrate as much as I can and I might as well use that for good by reading peoples mistakes and making it a “non event” as Ashley Neal would say.
      I would add I’m finding the transition difficult but I’m enjoying The results of being less stressed and obviously safer on the road

    • @BadDriversOfNapa
      @BadDriversOfNapa 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MAJ0RMEL0DY I like Ashley's motto of _'Make it a non event'_ . Very smart and wise advice, however, not everyone chooses to let things slide. And I see no issue with people who choose to call out other's mistakes. As a driving instructor, Ashley has a duty to err on the side of extreme caution when it comes to the potential of escalating people's mistakes into road rage by honking or shouting at drivers who made a mistake. He'd be incurring liability for encouraging people to do that, so he encourages people not to react at all to other people's mistakes and to just focus on their own driving. Nothing wrong with taking that route and it is the safest.
      However, by taking the passive approach and making something a 'non event', that may be true for the moment, but if the person didn't realize they made a mistake, they're certainly going to repeat the same mistake if they don't get honked at or told. What may be a non event now, may very well become an event later for someone else. So I choose to nip it in the bud and use my horn to communicate to other drivers their mistakes. Ashley would strongly disapprove, but he has to because of his being a driving instructor.

    At around 11:00 re "Age gets to us all and it's going to happen to me and you". I often think about that Ash and it's one reason why my Mum and I like to keep busy attending all these events. I'm a fair bit older than you Ash, so it's "going to happen" to me somewhat earlier. I do hope I will be able to continue driving in an alert and safe fashion well into my senior years and I do try and lead a healthy lifestyle. In a way, I also consider myself "lucky" to have had cataracts at an early age and had the surgery to have them removed back in Oct 2014, two weeks apart for each eye, back in Vancouver. I have since enjoyed 6/6 vision in each eye without contact lenses or glasses despite being at -14 dioptres of myopia. Of course now, my "prescription lenses" are inside my eyes.
    I'm also lucky I have a Mum who is relatively healthy and can do all these trips with me. If not, I would not make these trips on my own and leave her at home alone. She is 25 years my senior btw. As you may recall, she did have a medical episode at the British Motor Show in Farnborough earlier this year and was taken by ambulance to the nearest A&E where we spent 8 hours for her to have various tests and be given the all clear. Likely to have been acid reflux and was in no way cardiac related. Fingers crossed that was a one off. She does get tired with all these trips though, especially bearing in mind that many folks in their 30s would find them tiring!
    We have many trips planned in the near future and beyond, so very much hope that age doesn't catch up with us too much!
    I do hope you will continue this channel for many years and indeed decades to come by the way. Hope I get to meet you again btw...and yes possibly do a Viewers Drives at some point.

    If your car breaks down in a dodgy place, you can usually move it a good few yards with the starter motor, assuming it's not a battery issue. Just put the car in gear, clutch up and start the car, then move and steer to a safer spot. Shouldn't do any damage the starter motor is doing all the work and you don't even have to get out of the car.

    Not a mechanic but it looks like the first clip looks like it could be a diesel runaway? The pickup is probably a turbo-diesel so it's possible the turbo failed catastrophically when they were accellerating onto the motorway, sending turbo oil back into the engine which would act as fuel.
    Of course they might just be desperately revving it due to some other issue.

    Good for you to wait at around 8:55 for the learner practicing parallel parking. I see this a lot and totally understand the objective here. My only concern is someone coming out of the side street you just came out of and only looking to their right, seeing it's clear and turning into the main road you are now in before properly looking to their left. I might have waited a little further forward and even then, I'd be keeping a very close eye behind me, remaining in first gear and ready to quickly move forward to avoid getting rear ended for being courteous to the learner. And pretty poor driving by the blue car that came past you even though you had a right signal on plus your subtle move forward and out slightly.

    Last clip. I get that in a perfect world we would all stop and allow this lady to cross especially with a child. But if you give the nod to this lady and there is a collision from one of the other approaches are you part of the subsequent investigation and living with the guilt. I get that Ashley stopping short takes out about 30% of the risk but still leaves the other approaches. This is a complicated junction with everyone trying to look everywhere for a space to go safely and it looks like a high risk junction especially with that other approach from the right. If this junction is always like this as Ashley says then could the pedestrians also mitigate some of the risk. If it were me I would consider walking left down the road 12 metres to the crossing point next to the third tree (11.58). From this point there is far less risk involved as you're crossing a single road and is more likely to have a driver hold back and allow you to cross there. Council's don't install Zebra crossings on giveway lines they are set back from the junction.

      Standards of driving.
      Surely as a biker you always have your brakes covered and are checking for possible escape routes when you approach such scenarios? If no-one is 2cm from your rear plate, it is far easier and safer for you to do as Ashley did.
      The law may well say the lorry gives way but that does not mean to say he will. Indeed, I find many larger vehicle drivers use their might to force out. I am not always unsympathetic, as they rarely have the acceleration to make the move cleanly in busy times.
      I would also presume on the test you were expected to show you were, as above, aware of the potential dangers. So blasting past and claiming your right would not have been appreciated.

The Canadian wife says her British husband makes her laugh whenever they visit Canada and a driver stops to let them cross the street. British husband starts running across whereas the Canadian wife just walks across at a normal pace. When they re-unite on the other side, she jokingly asks him "Are you in a hurry?" This change has not been communicated to many pedestrians.
    It happens loads of times where I stop before i turn into a road because a pedestrian is waiting to cross, and even when I give them the hand signal to go, they insist that I go first, by that point there is a queue gathering behind.

      The one at 5:07... Ashley was hardly "braking firmly". Traffic was stopped ahead just past the junction anyway so slowing down and letting the truck out was best for general flow. Ashley was also way closer to the green van at 10:30 than he was to the blue truck at 5:07, there's no comparison between the two scenarios.
      The green van stopped harshly when they noticed the motorcycle and should have noticed Ashley too. Since they stopped and the road ahead was clear, Ashley proceeded which is when the van started moving again. Ashley gave a "I am here" beep and all was good.

      @@SurgeDashcam We judge firm braking differently, however, see how the driver of the Virgin van brakes at 5:10 due to Ashley's unnecessary stop. I wouldn't be happy at being made to stop in that situation. If the traffic was stopped ahead then a queue would have formed which the van could have pulled out through. Slowing a little is one thing. Stopping free flowing traffic is another. It was an example of exaggerated etiquette, in my view, and has an element of 'Road Captain' about it.
      Ashley could have easily stopped for the green van less quickly than the blue, and noone was behind to be forced to brake with him. He elected not to. Indeed he had already slowed as if to stop or turn, which appears to have encouraged the driver to pull out. Segregation doesn't work, it's crap (is insanel expensive and takes more than half a century to even get some in, see Netherlands) it pushes people on bikes to the periphery such that they have more difficult journeys that are more circuitous and lengthier, you're exposed more at perpendicular angles which is the singular biggest killing zone in netherlands for those riding bikes. That's not opinion, that's the Dutch govs own stats, 60+ people riding bikes get killed when a bike lane crosses a motor lane, More than double the deaths of people on bikes compared to Uk despite us having 4 times more motor traffic and the Dutch having all that segregation. Also ccling modal share has been dropping (despite the manipulation of data to state otherwise). Car sales have increased significantl in NL and no-one wants to talk about these huge elephants and that segregation doesn't change shit, onl make matters more dangerous!
      As someone from a very flat city that as of 1989 had a 22% modal share of people riding to work and low car use/ownership, it's not segregated lanes that change outcomes (regards safety) or entice children and adults alike to cycle.

      that is an issue that I, as a yank, see with the british doctrine of defining multiple different species of crossing. in the US, we have a "crosswalk" and then we have crosswalk signals. the crosswalk exists outside any signal apparatus, so it can be placed anywhere it is beneficial. (though by definition, an implied pedestrian crossing exists at every junction)

    • @wr2899
      @wr2899 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kenbrown2808it’s not really an issue, there are a few types of crossings and everyone knows what the script is with them. Zebra crossings are cheaper for the council and often used where the pelican (light controlled) crossing wouldn’t be suitable.
      American roads are generally big and straight from what I’ve seen. British roads vary but many are very tight with lots of bends. There is a zebra crossing near me that wouldn’t be suitable for traffic lights due to space and how the road bends around. You can see the crossing from far enough up the road from the bend however due to the angle, traffic lights wouldnt actually be visible until you are quite close and not all drivers would slow in anticipation. if that makes sense.
      Plus the speed limit is 20mph and traffic generally low so having to wait for lights would likely discourage people from using the crossing because it would probably be quicker and low risk just to cross. It’s more for elderly/disabled who might take longer to cross and safer for children who may not be as aware when crossing so it helps protects them because drivers are expecting it.

    In the opening clip, I think that may have been a runaway diesel. Diesel engines don't have a throttle valve, so if they receive an uncontrolled fuel source (eg. an oil leak from a broken turbocharger), they will just run until that fuel source is removed, or you find a way to starve it of air. In most cases, when the fuel source is the engine oil, it'll run until the oil gets low enough to seize the bearings - and it'll make those huge clouds of smoke in the process.

    That first clip is a classic case of a runaway diesel. There's either an issue with the piston rings or the turbo and the engine is burning engine oil instead of diesel. Switching the ignition off won't stop it. If it's a manual, stick it in a high gear with the brake fully on and dump the clutch, it's the only way you can realistically stop one if you're on the side of the road. If you have an automatic diesel, there's not much you can do other than sit there and wait for the engine to seize up.

      if you can get to the air intake and block it, that will also shut it down, but yes, if the engine of ANYTHING is trying to run away, and you have a manual transmission, go to high gear and use the brakes to stop it; with the clutch engaged, so it stalls the motor. (by "anything" I mean if the engine runs away for other reasons, as well)

    How much did the taxi driver charge you for that journey up the road? 😉
    Joking aside I will try and help like that when I can. I recently helped someone that had broken down entering a shopping cart park at the entrance to a roundabout within the car park. 2 minutes out of my day to help out and keep others safe by pushing them into a suitable parking bay

    Whatever happened to public information films on all channels like they did with the Green Cross Code? Looking at pedestrian and parents not teaching it to their kids - that should be repeated too! Have you seen the Irish ones on speeding? They should be shown everywhere.

    I drive in The Highlands of Scotland. A common sight are mirrors folded in particularly on camper vans/motorhomes. As far as I'm concerned, you are making your vehicle unroadworthy, and the authorities should be clamping down on this. Like you said Ashley. They can't see you behind.

    The very last clip at around 12:20, absolutely spot on. The authorities really need to have a massive publicity campaign to make folks aware of the "new" rules...which aren't so new now! From my own observations, very few drivers follow these new rules and it really hasn't made much difference at all. To the extent that when they do and allow me to cross, I actually give them a big "thumbs up", a nod and mime "Thank You" as if to say "You are a very rare breed of driver that actually understands the rules".

    • @letter1014
      @letter1014 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      And that's the thing, if we don't all know the rules it leads to conflict and confusion. Some pedestrians assume priority and if the driver is on the phone or speeding, it can end in tragedy.
      At the end of the day, it is a 'should' not a 'must' which arguably make it even more confusing.

      My experience in having lived in different places is that in some areas drivers are very compliant in giving way to predestians, while in other areas I have had too many near misses to count, this includes cars bushing past within 30cm behind me.

      Wandering off topic but a pet hate of mine when crossing a zebra crossing is the cars that slow just enough for you to cross but they roll past not giving much room behind

    • @ibs5080
      @ibs5080 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@frogsplorerYes I hate that too. It happens even more when crossing a side street that a driver is turning in to. They barely slow down sufficiently for me to cross and then proceeded to virtually "shave the pants" off my trousers. I wonder how these drivers cross the road themselves when they are pedestrians. Would they not mind if another driver did that to them?

  • @mikepembo8297
    @mikepembo8297 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Last clip. Happens too often. Exactly the same scenario where my (correct) holding back has suggested to the pedestrian that the other side is clear for them to go, but the opposing traffic does not abide by the law and almost clobbers them. There needs to be more PR on this otherwise there will be deaths and injuries

  • @Kieran.Robertson
    @Kieran.Robertson 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Last clip wouldn’t be a problem if there was a continuous pavement. Make the crossing one long speed bump & cars will slow / give way. England needs to learn from the Dutch.

    Given your knowledge, The way you articulate situations especially and the overwhelming amount of evidence you have from your dashcam and those sent in, I say you would be best placed to go after the DVSA over these rules that are just making roads more dangerous for drivers, Cyclists and the general public. Another great video, I am awaiting the SD card back from the local police as I was nearly involved in/Witness to an accident early hours of the morning at the end of September, I had a 6 passengers in my smax who had came over from Portugal and Switzerland for a Mauy Thai event. When I dropped them at the airport the next Day they said to me 'Thank you for everything you have done for us and for saving our lives last night Brother' I told them that I didn't think I had 'Saved their lives' but they were welcome, When I get the SD card back and if the footage is still there I will send it in for your opinion.

    7:17 Bit of a different situation where some of cycling twitter disagreed with you was when the beeping vehicle was using the horn to facilitate an overtake of cycles.
    Using that kind of logic at 6:05 with the folded up wing mirror you should you have beeped your horn at them -only to make him aware of your presence as you proceed past him, no?

  • @concernedcitizen12577

    With regard to beeping, your horn probably prevented a collision between the cyclist and the car. It enabled the cyclist to brake sooner thus preventing an accident. A horn is only the same as a mobile phone a noise that could distract driver/rider so I would prefer the warning, it could save lives
