The opening of this scene reminds of Chalky's last words to Narcisse - "It's all a dream to begin with, ain't nobody ever been free."

  • @lighthouse44

"You are just a peddler and a pimp, sitting in a jail cell". It was nice watching Narcisse finally get stripped of his fake veneer of eloquence and sophistication. Hoover's words were cold and brutal, nowhere for Narcisse to hide.

@covalentbond7933 Seems to me that anyone just resigned to the idea that every new day will bring trouble is cynical. I might be more accurate saying they are "negative" or "pessimistic" maybe "without hope" but "cynical" came to mind first, and I'm still gonna go with that.
My father passed last month after a long, good life...Raised with some religion, he told me late in life that he had abandoned it after coming to the conclusion that we are alone in the universe -- there is no god or heaven or angels, or even any extraterrestrial beings...I thought that, too, was brutally cynical. Another friend once told me that he believed that Hell was actually on Earth and that humans had to go through Hell on Earth as a kind of test before they could move on to any heaven. In a similarly negative vein, Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman once said that life was an endless series of humiliations.
While I can understand all these concepts and beliefs, and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, personally, I'm not certain I could live with so little hope (and without some faith in something).

He wasn't wrong about Chalky and Nucky's relationship... they weren't partners. Nuck was the boss..and Chalky was the underling. Chalky hated Narcisse so much he ignored that Dynamic..which got him Checked by Nuck... that played right into Narcisse's hands... as he was all about the work of diminishing Chalky's influence over Black Jersey... and Usurping his position.
Outplaying Chalky in the street and with Daughter.. made him overconfident.
You gotta remember. It's his hubris that gets him in the end... not uncle sam.. he probably wasn't able to make one report before Lucky and Benny sent them killers..

If you remember in Willi's first scene in season 5 he sits by the black girl that later is his co worker. The way the actress plays it you would assume they would end up being in love but they weren't given enough time and had to drop the sub plot completely.

"I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.
During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents."

Compare Nucky to Hoover, both men gifted at saying the right thing at the right time. Nucky witty and charming, Hoover direct, calculated and cutting. Here, when Hoover forces Narcisse to call him Sir, it is all about establishing his dominance than perhaps his personal feelings towards race.
We saw Nucky on so many occasions say what he needed to say. For example after the shooting at Chalky's warehouse, he gives 2 identical speeches to both groups advocating race and it is obviously no reflection on his personal feelings.
A series of Nucky and Hoover clashing, playing a strategic match of chess if you will, would have been pretty epic.

He's such an interesting villain, I honestly think he's the best villain Boardwalk has ever had. I was disappointed he didn't have as much to do this season as I would have liked, but I'm glad he's returning.

Chalky did not have all that outside Caribbean stuff that the " Dr " was coming from Had he been had been deported they would have been calling him a "worthless deportee" and the people in the whole of the Caribbean Islands would of never found favor to him EVER just like what happened to Marcus Garvey
( Also watch a Jamaican movie called Shottas this same type of theme comes up as well in the movie
The theme of being deported is raw and in your face as it squirrely place the viewer as a Jamaican overseas [ foreign ] )
No. 2 Chalky people have mainly come from being in prison or in jail Those was the people he was trying to help
