Fact: Forty-five years after being phased in 1953, Sterling, with the help of Freightliner, resurfaced into production, after Ford made the painful decision to cancel heavy-duty truck production in the Fall of 1997. This meant that Freightliner acquired the remaining stock of Ford’s legendary Louisville and Aeromax trucks (12,645 of them, to be exact.) to begin the process; the Louisville was the Acterra, and the Aeromax was the A-Line and top-of-the-line SilverStar. Sterling didn’t quite build their own trucks, but they brought out spin-offs of some existing trucks to broaden the range. The Bullet, for example, is loosely based on the Dodge Ram Heavy-Duty 4500 and 5500. Production of Sterling trucks lasted a full 10 years, before calling it quits in 2008, when the economy went into a shameful recession. Today, many of these Sterling trucks are still in active service.
