    Phil, that desk, OMG! WHAT A FIND! And for, I think you said, for £70.00. That was a steak! WOW! And it's connection to your Dad. That is wonderful. My dad was a doctor and he had a huge roll top desk, and it was so beautiful! When you showed your new treasure, I sat there with my mouth hanging open. It's wonderful and I am so happy for you as it is connected to your Dad and the colliery where he worked. Wonderful!

      Thanks Abigail, yes it was just £70, which was my top bid on the book, as I wasn't at the auction, and while it was all I had to spend, I never thought I'd get it! But I did! Glad it brought back memories of your dad's desk too. Take care and thanks for watching 🙂😎🐼

    Sorry you lost your dad at such a young age. I was 8 in 1967, the following year my dad got the Hong Kong flu. Our hospitals were full so my dad was quarenteed at home. He was never the same, but he lived for 16 more years. The desk is gorgeous! You could also put shelves in front of the windows, between the window frames, too.

    I missed the live and my fingers were itching to comment but it wouldn't work! Just want to say 'thanks' to Phil for sharing his personal story of the colliery and to say that the desk has found the perfect home. Who would give a desk as a goodbye present these days???

    • @LetsgowithTheJohnsons
      @LetsgowithTheJohnsons  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So nice that you appreciated the story of my dad and the colliery Cathryn. It felt right to share so that my excitement over the desk made sense to everyone. And you're right about presents these days, not likely to get a roll top desk, but I did have a Rotary Watch presented to me by the men when I finished in the mines 33 years ago, and I still have it. Take care, and thanks for watching 🙂😎🐼

    Wow, Phil, l wouldn't have passed up on that desk either, excellent find! I also immediately saw a dragon's head on that piece of metal, can't wait to see what you do with it! Caroline - pipe stems and then that beautiful pipe bowl...l felt your excitement! I loved the enlarged version of Plain or Patterned! I'd love to find patterned pieces like that, especially the floral and Willow patterns! We don't find those things here in the US. You both found great things and I'll bet you both had a blast. Finding things after a good storm must be extra thrilling!

      I'm thrilled with the desk Tracy, it was a wow purchase... Great that you can see the dragon too 🐲 Caroline was very happy with her pipe finds and there were a lot more pretty pieces of china on this visit which was really nice. It's always great to get out after a storm, to see what the high river levels have uncovered. Take care and thanks for watching 🙂😎🐼

There is a half burned corner pole structure with very rare early power spool insulators! Brilliant to hear about your father Phil and see the camera from your point of view! Enjoyed hearing the history of coal mining in
    that area . So happy for you that you found
    that desk with the connection to where your
    Da worked . Anytime I find treasures like
    that which are reminders of loved ones
    passed on , I get lovely goosebumps and
    warm feelings of loved ones . Can imagine
    They are sharing a wonderful Fey moment
    of the veil thinking so we can send thoughts
    of Love to each other that feel very real. Perhaps your Day was reaching out to share
    a moment with you Phil . If we can believe in
    Dragons we can believe in Heaven visits .

      Great to hear that you enjoyed the coal mining history Anne. The mines are a massive part of our story in the valleys as there were mines in most of our towns and villages. Every item has a story, but it takes someone to tell it, and I love telling those stories, and this time it was very special to tell the story of the desk and link it to my dad. As you say, those items seem to breach the veil as they bring back the reality of those we know are waiting for us in Heaven. Take care and thanks for watching 🙂😎🐼

    The lock strike plate is to prevent damage and tampering of the lock. That way the wood would not be chewed up by the bolt. It also prevented the lock from being picked since the bolt went down into a brass sheath. My beloved husband is a cabinet/furniture maker. If you can make friends with an bee keeper, get some bees wax and hand rub it. It will protect it from insects and such in the shed. To remove the scratches where they removed the lock, you can use some real fine steel wool and gently rub with the beeswax to fix those marks. And I'm so happy that Caroline is doing so well. The clear glass piece is part of the "killer baby bottles" from Victorian times.

He's been staying at home with all his friends, as we did get a little concerned that he would get lost, 😱 and that would be so sad 😢 He is on the Live Show every week, and has taken to sending hugs and kisses to everyone from time to time 💙🐼💙. Caroline is going from strength to strength, although hurting her knee and ending up on crutches has been a nuisance, where she was doing so well. But staying positive and keeping going. Kudos to you both for braving the elements to give us a great video. As always Phil, your history lesson was so interesting, knowing your dad worked there. Wish there was a photo of all the buildings, such a thorough job of clearing all traces. Lovely area, nice finds. That desk got a "Wow" out of me, price was a steal, nice chair too. I knew the bottles would add to the ambience, good colors☺️cheers from Michigan ✌️🥶

    We wonder if the knobbly pipe stems are meant to be replacing briarwood? Did you set your shed on a concrete base ? You’ll need a shed “extension” soon 🤪.it’s a lovely roll top desk. Love the roll top desk Phil it's a stunner, Caroline the bottle stopper you found with the hole through the middle might from a feeding bottle ,these bottles were sadly referred to as baby killers as they had a rubber tube going through the hole and a teat on the other end but the design made them impossible to clean properly,and this resulted in bacteria that killed many young babies.

    • @LetsgowithTheJohnsons
      @LetsgowithTheJohnsons  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I loved this Johnson family history episode. I'm sorry you lost your dad so early. Was his death at all coal related?
    That desk is a treasure! We recently bought a similar, American-made roll top desk that turned out to be too big for where we initially planned to put it. There is no family link to ours, but it's still a very nice, well made desk. It now takes up way too much space in our living room because it won't fit in our small library/TV room. 😆
    Is that threaded stopper from one of those old, deadly baby bottles? I can't remember if that's the way they worked, but that's what came to mind.

    • @LetsgowithTheJohnsons
      @LetsgowithTheJohnsons  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Shanna. No, my dad died from a blood clot after he'd recovered from pneumonia, as the doctor back then thought bed rest was good for you, but now we know it's not! I know what you mean about the size of your desk... Some would say my desk is too big for a shed, but I like it, and it just fits 😄 Having checked online I think you could be right about the baby bottle, thanks 🙂😎🐼

    Congrats on the beautiful roll top desk! Some old English polish and cleaner will make that shine! Such great condition you scored there! Amazing what the storms wash up, I love the old pottery shards and pieces, Oh that glass stopper with a hole in it is from the old baby bottles the kind that had the tube in them, unfortunately they didn't learn about germs earlier! my father was a stone mason but my pop-pop worked in some coal mines, actually I think both of my pop-pops did and they farmed as well. Very interesting history of the colliery Phil. I had to look up that word though because here in the states we just say coal mine. When I looked up the word it did say it was a British word for coal mine. For some reason that word never followed to the states like most words did.

    That is a fine piece of industrial furniture Phil.
    I noticed the brand of furniture polish you were using, I would recommend using a polish which does not contain silicone.
    If you can find it, there is a good polish called wood silk, which only contains natural oils and beeswax.
    The interesting stopper with the hole in, maybe from a self feeding child's bottle, the child would be propped up, and they would feed through a rubber tube, apparently they were difficult to sterilise and caused illness to the children.
    Best Wishes to you both. 👍
