Then he went back to the house. People left but I was talking to the guard when Elvis returned and he wanted to talk to me some more. Hi Dani, I'm your go-to Elvis historian at your command. "That's All Right" was his first commercial effort and it was a regional hit in the South. It's historical importance is that on either side (the flip was "Blue Moon of Kentucky"), DJ's couldn't categorize the music. Is it R&B? Is it C&W? And most DJ's and their audiences (outside of Memphis) didn't know Elvis' skin color. For young people, especially, music is color-blind and Elvis advanced the cause of racial integration & acceptance faster than any other influence. The coolest thing about the recording of "That's All Right" was that there wasn't supposed to be any recordings made that night. It was a fluke. They were in the studio to practice. That's all. But during a break, Elvis was clowning around with an old Arthur Crudup tune, bassist Bill Black joined in, and then guitarist Scotty Moore found a place to weave his instrument into the send-up, too. That's when studio owner, Sam Phillips, started the tape recorder and told them to start over. And that rocket they lit that night is still ablaze. Timeless perfection.

Right, Scotty is sitting on Elvis’ left hand side and covering the lead guitar parts. He is an often overlooked pioneer and innovator who adapted country and western style and Travis picking into a new rockabilly then rock and roll style, Carl Perkins was another in similar style. This was going on in the 50’s while up north others were adapting a different sound, the country blues, and electrifying it into a harder blues sound, folks like Muddy Waters leading to Chuck Berry, etc.

I called ahead and asked if the hotel thought Scotty might sign my guitar and they said they were sure he would and to bring it! So I did and when I walked in the the half-empty theater before the show I saw a tweed amp on a chair with the red light on, so I knew Scotty was in the house. :) I had on my pink ''Crown Electric'' shirt and sat down front. When I gat up during a break to use the restroom Ronnie said into the mike, ''Where you going?!' I said, ''I'll be right back!'' and those there laughed. OH did I mention the Jordainaires were there too? It was surreal with Ronnie nailing the Elvis part. After the show I brought my guitar to the lobby and Ronnie recognized me and kidded me about my leaving for a moment. They ALL autographed my 1977 Fender Telecaster, and Scotty said, ''That was my first guitar.'' A lady look a WONDERFUL picture of us, but WAIT: There's MORE. So I go to my room and change and park my guitar, then go down to the basement restaurant for dinner, and who do I see but Scotty and DJ and Ronnie with their families at a big table waiting for dinner! Unbelievably, Scotty motions me over to join them for dinner AND NOW I AM EATING DINNER with Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. I'm like in a daze! Scotty then proceeds to tell me stories of being on the road with Elvis in the South in Bill Black's DE SOTO with their equipment on a roof-rack! At 5:36 you were commenting that a guitarist was shaking his legs too. That was Charlie Hodge. Scotty Moore was his original lead guitarist. He didn't move much at all in the early 50s or here, though he 'made' the early Elvis Sun Sound. Bill Black, who died three years prior to this special was a wild man on stage. He played the upright bass. He was funny and would sometimes ride that bass around like on a bronco. He would whoop it up and relax Elvis when he was nervous. Parker told him to cool it when he thought Bill was getting too much attention.
Credit where credit is due. Arthur (Big Boy" Crudup (1905-1974) wrote and recorded this song. Elvis did two more of Crudup's songs : "My Baby Left Me" and "So Glad You're Mine." Elvis did the former several times in concert in the 1970s, but not the latter.

I would suggest learning more about his early days before he became successful and sharing it in your videos. He was told he couldn’t sing many times. Despite all the rejection he persevered. Very inspirational. You mentioned his legs shaking and moving during the performance. Early on Elvis had a fear of performing in front of people and his legs would shake. I won’t say anymore and spoil the full story. Everybody that has a love for music should get to know this man and just how talented he was. Truly amazing artist.

I've been a fan for 30 years. Heard a lot of stories, read a lot of books. He was a fascinating human being. I'm a big fan of those early SUN years. I agree with your observation of his voice being deeper, grittier in 68 compared to 54. He was 19 years old when he recorded that song...wasn't even meant to be a record. Sam Phillips just wanted to hear what he sounded like on tape with a band. See if they could get a sound Sam could use. And Boy did he! That record came out of his first jam season ever...at 19... He Guys, please don't forget to subscribe, she sounds and acts okay. Great for the young to discover him. Also Dani, if you get a chance, view his first movie after leaving the Army, GI BLUES, great movie, and he showed how happy he was to be back. But, for me, it was the Hawaii Special, where he hit his HEIGHT! Magnificent. Was a teenager when Heartbreak Hotel came out. Have all the songs and video's. Never got tired of him.

Hi Dani. My suggestion for you is to give a review of one of his movies. Perhaps Wild in the Country (1961). He is still young and his movies were, at that time, allowing him to explore acting. You could discuss the story with screen shots. It would also be nice to hear your cover of the Movies theme track. Only a suggestion.
Hi Dani, good job as usual. A little tidbit about what you just saw. D.J. Fantana (his original drummer from the 50s) is using the back of his guitar case as drum. Go back in check it out. One more thing, I really think you should explore other fanastic performances from his movies. For example, Return to Sender from Girls! Girls! Girls! and Viva Las Vegas from the Vival Las Vegas movie are just 2 examples. There are dozens of primo performances that will have you in awe.
The story I heard, was they just couldn't get the sound they wanted so when Sam Phillips went on a break, they were just fooling around and came up with that beat and that sound and then Sam Phillip said "There It Is". He wanted a white man to sound like a black man. It was his first public released song that was a regional hit and the is as you know is history. Love you Girl.

Yeah a good documentary is Elvis and the black community. It puts away a lot of lies that have been said about him and stereotypes. I think you would really enjoy it if you haven't already have seen it.

I would suggest learning more about his early days before he became successful and sharing it in your videos. He was told he couldn’t sing many times. Despite all the rejection he persevered. Very inspirational. You mentioned his legs shaking and moving during the performance. Early on Elvis had a fear of performing in front of people and his legs would shake. I won’t say anymore and spoil the full story. Everybody that has a love for music should get to know this man and just how talented he was. Truly amazing artist.

I agree with your observation of his voice being deeper, grittier in 68 compared to 54. He was 19 years old when he recorded that song...wasn't even meant to be a record. Sam Phillips just wanted to hear what he sounded like on tape with a band. See if they could get a sound Sam could use. And Boy did he! That record came out of his first jam season ever...at 19... Hi Dani. My suggestion for you is to give a review of one of his movies. Perhaps Wild in the Country (1961). He is still young and his movies were, at that time, allowing him to explore acting. You could discuss the story with screen shots. It would also be nice to hear your cover of the Movies theme track. Only a suggestion.

you should explore other fanastic performances from his movies. For example, Return to Sender from Girls! Girls! Girls! and Viva Las Vegas from the Vival Las Vegas movie are just 2 examples. There are dozens of primo performances that will have you in awe.

You need to react to the HBO 2 part documentary series Elvis: the searcher
The story I heard, was they just couldn't get the sound they wanted so when Sam Phillips went on a break, they were just fooling around and came up with that beat and that sound and then Sam Phillip said "There It Is". He wanted a white man to sound like a black man. It was his first public released song that was a regional hit and the is as you know is history. Love you Girl.

Yeah a good documentary is Elvis and the black community. It puts away a lot of lies that have been said about him and stereotypes. I think you would really enjoy it if you haven't already have seen it.
