Virtual Water: Dr. Reza Maknoon at TEDxTehran

I have been watching Virtual Water info from different sources but the data and info presented are unique, especially with country data and he covered lot of areas untouched by others.. Message conveyed.. Great work..

general message was valuable and it is good to start thinking about sustainability. but the examples and reasons was not expected from academic person. could we export 25000 litre of water to Germany and import BMW?
also it was not fair to compare wheat water consumption with tomato which is produced in green house with sprinkling system. poor wheat. not high quality presentation but glad to hear that.

About 45 years ago I met Reza Maknoon in Seattle where he was sponsored by the shah's government to study at the University of Washington. Mr. Reza is a good person with likable personality. However, because of lack of supportive and accurate evidence, his presentation(s) are generally poor and not impressive. In this presentation he is trying to convince the audience that growing wheat in a mostly arid country is not a good idea because it requires several hundred litters of water to produce a bushel of wheat. But, he apparently doesn't know or didn't do a research to learn that majority of wheat produced in Iran (about 70% of it) is produced in west and southwest of the country where the annual precipitation is good enough to grow wheat that requires less labor, fertilizations, and etc. Wheat farmers normally through wheat in the ground during winter and early spring and go to cities to do labor work and come back in fall to harvest. The ground is not irrigated thus there is no water wasted. Precipitation is good enough to produce plenty of wheat. If farmers don't farm wheat, they can't use their land to produce anything else because the rainfall is not plentiful enough to produce anything else and it will sip into the ground and therefore wasted. Hopefully, in the future, Mr. Reza will do some research before he makes a presentation.

Not meets TEDx usual standard at all. Poor presentation. However, good start for Tehran's TED. Hope it gets better....
