  • This week I take delivery of my new saw, a Hydmech DM-10 Double miter horizontal bandsaw. This will be replacing the old DoAll saw I have been using. I'll get it uncrated and put together in this video. I'm also installing a new 3 phase circuit to power this saw, so I'll follow up in another video on the full installation, power up, and first cuts. Also in this week's video i machine a custom screw for my GoPro Media Mod case.

    I recently discovered your channel and kind of bingewatched most of your video's. They're addictive. I always love to see a genuine craftsmen at work. You and your wife make a true great couple. She is so interested and supportive in your love for machines and machining and I'm pretty sure you are as well in her 'hobby'. Especially nowadays it is very great to notice people like you still exsist. I hope you guys have a great Christmas and if there's no video before the end of 2020 I wish you all the best for 2021. Stay safe and healthy. Greetings from Holland

    I appreciate your paying attention to where things are made even if others do not. In today’s world components are made all over the planet so we can’t nitpick, but simply knowing this company has a manufacturing presence in Conway (in my home state) tells me you are conscientious about keeping jobs in the US. I am far from an isolationist-but this is important info for people to know.

    Man...my girlfriend always talks crap about me watching machining, saw mills, etc. When Abby said the saw was beautiful...those words hit me!
    Not that taking a tape measure to the saw blade takes all that much time but that stop would be so dang nice. I made a little 45 degree jig to cut tubing and stuff for frames. Anything else is a bit tougher but 45 is probably 90% of what I needed.

    Hi mate,
    The tray is for when your mitre cutting. The back of the bow hangs over the edge of the base and that tray is so coolant is still diverted back into the base instead of on your floor.

    I hope you enjoy the HydMech. We bought one one and didn't like it much at all. It had features, but it wasn't very rugged. We were a heavy production environment and we needed far more reliability than you will need. So I don't imagine you will experience the issues that we faced. Ours was bigger than yours. Ours came from Canada. Our main drive gear reduction unit failed within a couple of years. Our blade tensioning wheel was plastic and it didn't last long. Ours was full auto feed. There's a lot of competition in this market. A lot of saws seem to have cheapened the quality to compete with low priced machines.

    • @BlackSmokeDMax
      @BlackSmokeDMax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have heard both views on that brand. We ended up going with a HEMSaw, that is also full auto, made in Oklahoma. Super happy with that thing for about 15 years now.

      New Hyd Mechs are no where near the old ones. Unless you are talking the big ones made in Canada. We change out a lot of gearboxes on hyd mechs.

    • @paulhunt598
      @paulhunt598 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our gearbox failure started as a bad main bearing. I did the teardown and found a piece of the outer race was missing. I found the piece. It was a clean break. I believe that the large bearing was dropped and cracked during assembly. There was no other explanation for how it broke in the assembled gearbox. I couldn't get HydMech to warranty the failure. Our local dealer took a look, covered my bearing cost and reassembled for me at no labor cost. We bought a lot of machinery from this dealer.
      That experience really soured me o. HydMech. We had other issues too, but that failure should have been covered under warranty. Dealing with HydMech directly for parts was not pleasant. My dealer didn't have a fully staffed office, so going through the dealer for parts added more complexity. I had no previous experience with HydMech before we purchased our machine. I was previously unaware of the brand.
      We ran production volumes around the clock keeping two bandsaws running virtually non stop. Our machine was fancy and quick setup for angles, but it was too lightweight for our operation. I still suspect that Adam will never over stress his machine, and its flexibility for fab work is a fine feature. He is also an owner/operator that cares for his equipment. My experience was unpleasant, but if I added his new toy to my home shop, I would be giddy!
      I am already giddy. We pour footings today for my 60'x82' home shop expansion building. The new shop will be metal/machine/mechanic space. The old multi-use shop will be exclusively wood shop. My wife is supporting the build! And it is simply a hobby shop. That is why I am giddy.

    I received my first few squares plus a small bench vise from Fireball tool today and was feeling pretty good about my new additions. Then I click on Abom's new video and he gets a Hydmech DM-10.....suddenly I feel a little less excited about my new acquisitions. That's ok though as my tiny shop could never hold a DM-10 nor most of Adam's other machines;-) Love the channel and couldn't be happier for you. I look forward to future videos on the DM-10, or anything you'd like to share. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

    14:30 one trick I use a lot on picking up big weldments is to pick up close to your center of gravity, then to put pieces of steel onto your high side to level your part in the air.

    Your tap looks good after that tie rod job. Light wear, more importantly, no damage, or chipped teeth. Keep in mind, there are two methods of sharpening your taps. You mentioned grinding along the flutes. The other would be to grind along the over all lenghth of it. In volume work, that is the preferred way.
    Rough grind the leading flat at the front end down as much as needed. This reduces the amount of teeth to go from the minor to the major diameter. Follow up on this by grinding the teeth with a small clearance angle and a taper parallel to the flute to reestablish the leading angle back to it's original geometry. Just look at the original geometry and reproduce the same shape. This was something I could do by hand on a pedestal/bench grinder and get reliable threads produced on high volume orders.
    A combination, over time, of both methods would give you the longest tool life. You are not to often expect to be using the same tap as you do primarily prototype work so this tap may outlast your career!
    It took me a year or two of experience to become good at the sharpening method I described, but soon enough, it became pretty easy to preserve taps and I have used a similar method to grind chasers used in Geometric die heads.

    When lifting with straps we generally put a wrap on the lifting bars or shackles.
    That means you could have put 2 or 3 wraps at the front to level.
    That broken pallet would from your driver , cringed when he let that pallet jack down.
    We use an Italian version of that saw at work, so good for cutting.

    Congrats on the machine tool upgrade, Adam, look forward to seeing some fine parts of it in the future.
    I was watching a video on diesel engines at some point, and one of the comments that stuck in my mind was: A referral to one of the Scandinavian diesel V8's where the post read "They are like jewels inside".
    And I always think of that when I see you making stuff, it's done with pride to the best of your ability, unfaltering

    A mitering bandsaw makes all the difference. They are very convenient.
    If it’s like my Baleigh saw, that tray mounts at the back of the saw under the rear wheel. It catches the cutting fluid that gets carried into the lower part of the housing and would drip on the floor. You’ll need to move it to the side of the saw when you cut meters.

    Alternative for waterproofing tools for outside storage, and any metal surfaces: Mix about 30% clear grease with white spirit into a spray bottle and spray liberally. White spirit evaporates and leaves a thin layer of grease behind. Way cheaper than aerosol products and will last longer outside. I also use on the columns of the drill presses and mill tables and other places I want to keep free of rust where oil too easily wipes away.

    Just a thought, you could have used the DeWalt cordless reciprocating saw with the demolition blade in it to cut that pallet, but I saw the DeWalt cordless chain saw did a wonderful job. I also noted the DeWalt cordless blower did quick work of the DeWalt chainsaw chips in blowing them off your slab to decay into mulch in your grass. Keep your vids coming, I learn about stuff I have never seen before.
