    I just did this to my '95 320 sedan as the needle was vibrating. I put 2 cans of Sea Foam before I took the sending unit out which helped clean the sending unit. Replace the 'O' rings they are 27 years old. Put some grease on the new ones so they don't tear when reseating.

    Tried to do this on my '91 w124 300E. When I pulled on the top of the unit, it actually came off the cylindrical type and I could see the sending unit super-slim wires. Tried to pull it out still but just couldn't with the cylinderical type catching from inside the fuel tank. Gonna attempt again shortly, good chance of me breaking the those slim wires.

    Hello, my w124 fuel indicator shows 1/2 tank full when its below half tank, over when i fill it to the top or like 3/4 everything works fine until theres half of tank left and everything under that is not shown, what do you think it can be?

    Does this go for the coupe too? I have a 95 E320. Had NO idea that the gas tank is behind the rear passengers!!

      thanks for the reply. blows my mind the smart engineering in these Benz's. I'm used to jacking up the car and dropping the whole tank! thanks for the tutorial. @@MMWA-DAVE

    My 1990 300E petrol needle works but it shakes, what is the problem?

      Probably too late but, check the grounding cable in the trunk. Might be bad grounding causing that.

    What type of wires are those that the floater moves up/down on? The ones on the sides. Are they resistance wires? How many Ohms and what gauge are they? Anybody knows?

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the resistance does change based on where the float is touching it. Not sure what they are made of. They can successfully be cleaned carefully of the fuel varnish with acetone. If they are corroded or broken you need a whole new sender.

      @@MMWA-DAVE I appreciate the reply my man! Thank you. I figured out what the cause for my specific problem was. I have a W201 190E model and it turns out that the little nut down at the base of the tube (the one where you took off the sealant/glue from) was basically not holding the tube in place anymore. This resulted in the tube just falling off and kind of dangling from side to side, which in turn broke the two small wires from the soldered positions up top. I managed to solder them back in place and after taking a few readings with the multimeter, it read well and true!
      I made sure to solder them tight, as the small bracket they are connected to at the bottom is flexible and kinda bend-y, so it will provide that small tug/tightness once you solder the wires back on.
      My issue still remains that the little nut at the bottom is not 'holding on' to anything, to keep the whole tube from falling off again, so I had to just use some epoxy stock glue to glue the top plastic part to the rest of the tube (the one that the gauge cable connects to at the top). So for now, even after a long 150km journey, it holds.
      The readings are solid, with

    My fuel level needle doesnt go below 1/2. Is it the same problem?

    • @richardgreene3460

      Could be some rust on the center silver rod the float slides on. The float would therefore stick on the rod. I have had this happen on many of my Mercedes. Use some fine sand paper to clean the rod making sure the float slides easily (on the rod) after cleaning.

    Just going out on a limb here but maybe it's time to buy a tripod. I have a Gorilla pod which is really useful for locating to odd positions etc. Its the ones with the bendy bubble legs. My tank does the same thing at half way. I always fill up at half way anyway or about 45-50 litres. In the 6 months I've owned it I've never put less that $100 in it for that 45 litres!!! Oddly though, my M103 gets the same 11 Ltr/100 as my old 4 cyl 2011 Subaru Forester (non turbo).

      i have a tripod for my big camera but its huge and not suitable for small tight spaces. I use the phone the vast majority of the time now but could definitely do with something to hold it.
