Cleaning & Organizing the Machine Shop - Subscriber Giveaway - Some History on Topper Machine LLC

  • The last few months have been hectic. 16+ hours a day in the shop, leaves no time for cleaning. So, today I shut down and cleaned.
During the timelapse I will give some history and information about my shop.
Wow, I thought the stupid comments were over. Before commenting stupidly, you need to understand the facts.
Fact 1, 6 small shops like mine have closed in the last 3 years due to owner retirement. That work has come to me.
Fact 2, nobody wants to work! I have been trying to hire help for most of the summer.
Fact 3, we are working to be debt free in the next year. My wife and I are paying everything off, so working a lot ensures that will happen.
Fact 4, I take my time and do the jobs correctly. I don't do shoddy work that others do. Yes, it takes longer, but my customers don't mind paying more to not have to have it reworked. Which is also why I am so busy, word got out of the quality.
Owning a business means working long hours and taking on things you maybe shouldn't to grow and meet your own goals. We are working hard to grow our future, and short days will never cut it. Owning a business is not a 9-5 job, but a life choice to do something you are passionate about and want to see grow. Much ike having a child, you don't just leave a child after your 8 hours!
Topper Machine LLC is an entirely manual machine shop located in Spooner, WI. Our videos will highlight some of our shop work as well as the sawmill we built in the shop and our A.D. Baker steam engine, and others we work on.
    Thank you for watching!

Hey Josh good to see you are busy, but it is no excuse to have all that mess. Take the time to clean as you go and at the end of the day spend the last half hour having a clean and tidy as you wind down for the day. Remember that you are on your own like myself and you don't want to trip up on something and have an accident. Remember also that cleaning up after a job is chargeable to the customer and should only take 10 to 15 minutes. Remember Josh Safety First and a clean shop impresses the customer. Well done and a great video, all the best form Brisbane Australia.

Hi Josh. It’s brave of you to post this video, as there’s so many critics. It’s great that your so busy, hopefully your amount of backlog is driving your prices so that you can make enough profit for yourself, and to invest in your business. (John Saunders is an excellent roll model for entrepreneurs). Your time is very valuable, much more valuable than being the janitor: I’d suggest you look for a young, part time apprentice to take up the low level chores. Thanks for another great video!

There is nothing like a clean shop to make a guy not only want to work but to do a good job. Sometimes in the middle of a large project I get so sick of searching for tools that are buried under other tools that I will just shut down and clean up. Usually I put everything away even if I'm going to need it as soon as I restart the project. By not having to categorize what I should or shouldn't put away the clean up goes a lot faster. My guess for the weight is: an appropriate amount for the job at hand. Ken

I love the fact that she cleans everything up but I hate looking for things after she gets through. Most of the time she will pick up things and lay them on the table or workbench. I took a video of her sweeping sawdust in my wood shop and told her I was going to post it and title it "Worlds best dust collector" I am a blessed man!!!

Great video. The steel fab shop that I worked at in Racine, would do a huge clean up when a important customer was coming. We had a moving company come to move our equipment. Holes had to be cut in the floor and new foundations had to be poured for the lasers because vibrations from the neighboring train or the shear would interfere with the laser quality. I love your dog. My dogs love the country instead of the city. They are old and I will miss them when their time comes. I had a home business with plasma cut metal art. I sure can understand some of the problems of doing everything by yourself. Moving up here to help my Mom shut my business down along with COVID. I know nothing about milling but I sure do appreciate your work and skill.😃😃😃

Thanks Sir. Rocky is on a bunch of meds. Arthritis is one of his problems, he wants to keep going but he just can't anymore. We definitely have been taking it easy on him. His bed in the shop is a new addition, but he is loving it, and so am I.

Shop is looking good! Mine is still in its standard state of chaos but it’s almost harvest time so no time to attack it soon. Will see what winter brings I guess.
