Making A Ruby Incline Ring: A Silversmithing Tutorial

  • This video tutorial shows me making a modern and bold sterling silver ring featuring a beautiful Emerald Cut Synthetic Ruby. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling sheet, 22 gauge sterling sheet, and 3/16 inch 26 gauge fine silver bezel strip. This one includes the basic steps to build an open backed bezel setting for a faceted stone. As always I am using exclusively hard silver solder, and I use My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. I would rate this one as an intermediate project. This video is a bit longer, but is a detailed tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

    I've been a metal smith for a while. What I think that everyone should take from your vids, which are awesome, is that you don't use/need a bunch of expensive tools to make beautiful jewelry!

    I’m so glad I found your channel. I love that you are very simple in explaining things and that you use mostly the same things to make each piece. It makes it very easy for me as a beginner to understand what you are doing and the supply list doesn’t break the bank. I also like that you are doing a variety of beginner and intermediate pieces so it keeps it challenging.

    Niccce! thanks for the idea about the sleeve. I need to beef up a ring with a wide band for a man and need texture on it. Going to solder some scrap triangle shaped silver on band and roll it out. Did you go up about 2 ring sizes for outer sleeve?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you use hard solder most all the time?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Linda. Yes, with the exception of the final pin on hinges or final soldering operation on spinner rings. You can probably add the filigree ball that I just did to the list as well, as I used it for the final solder on it.

    If i wanted to polish a giant white agated quartz the shape of a giant kidney stone the size of my palm with a flex shaft from Amazon, what bits do I need to make sure that I get? They seem to come with wood working bits.

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not the best person to give you advice on this, but diamond flex shaft bits aren't too expensive. This would be for shaping it. You might need to do it wet to prevent overheating in some way. Not sure how people hand polish things like this. I'm certain someone on TH-cam has a tutorial about hand stone polishing, so they might be better to ask.

    Question I want to taper underside of inner band and out band to compensate for short fingers. Can you give pointers?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the good question Linda. I would just cut the inner band the same basic shape as the other one when I make it, or you could use a jeweler's saw to cut a taper into it:)
