    I live in Newtown, Powys and remember the 'Vigilante Group.' I also remember working at a local estate pub where one of its leaders drank. We'd just kicked everyone one out and locked up one night when I heard someone knocking on the window. I pulled the curtain back to see a regular with a big grin on his face telling me to take a look in the rear car park. He'd set fire to the group leaders car and it was well alight. I rang 999 and the fire brigade turned up a few minutes later, but knowing who's car it was they didn't seem to be in any rush to put it out 🤣

      Have I Got News For You S04E09 - Peter Cook & Douglas Adams 353am 1.3.22 indeed... they would be two guests , cook & adams, you'd probably actually want at your dinner party... as opposed to just sitting there minding yer own business and folk turning up to be photographed in your vicinity so they can make it seem as though 1: you enjoy their company 2: you have been invited to one of their dubious soirees 3: you do nothing but party!!! p.s dont worry they have anticipated all these sarcastic quips so it's another heady dose of "right back at yer".. which is sadly boring the eff out of me... p.s no religious groups massacring hundreds of germans during the dark days of ww2 were ever featured in this show... which is nice.

      Paul Merton 's dislike of him was very obvious, petty, and off putting. If they'd replaced Merton instead of Deayton... we wouldn't have had multiple Boris hostings, lulling people into the idea that he was okay cos he could ' take a joke '.

    We watched this all the time during the 1990s. What a great show. The elegance and precision of the language was exemplar. I know Deayton was not well liked by the other regulars and may have been problematic for a number of reasons but I enjoyed his compering immensely. And as for Paul Merton; god, what a talent.

    What’s so amazing aside from the legends in this episode is how the format has not shifted in any way in all these years. Loved it then.. love it today. In a world of so much content HIGNFY nailed its format early, They stuck with it and they’re still top of their game in panel shows today.

    • @lomax343
      @lomax343 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @musicgarryj
      @musicgarryj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      At the risk of being controversial, the format has radically changed. Today's BBC decrees that there must be at least one compulsory female panellist and one minority box-ticker on each show. Wit and general talent to entertain are now secondary. HIGNFY's ability to attract guests of Peter Cook's calibre are sadly long gone: as is Paul Merton's ability to be funny.

    • @MrLtia1234
      @MrLtia1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed - like so many things it's not changed at all, but there are a lot more angry viewers who are triggered by this sort of thing. I'm amazed it's surviving.

      @@musicgarryj The decline of Merton's wit, and his ever-briefer contribution, makes me sympathetic to a more recent panellist. He (objecting to an _ad hominem_ money-grubbing smear) claimed the team captains got £20,000 each per appearance - and wasn't contradicted. Not quite in the MOTD money/old rope stratosphere, but hardly peanuts for such cosy, perennial sinecures.
