    I called a popular plant TH-camr out on talking smack about the younger plant people on TH-cam not being experts and how they shouldn’t make videos.
    He responded with four paragraphs bragging about all these irrelevant accolades about how god said women need to shut up and not presume to tell men what to do. It was the craziest thing I ever did see! Clearly a fragile little ego on that one.
    I look forward to you passing his subs. 😎 Just call me Petty LaBelle.

    Could you maybe talk about plants during the winter? Like what plants go dormant during the cold, what to do with them, how to know how to care for them, if you can propagate them, etc.

    • @HarliG

      Yes definitely! I have been working on a dormancy video for caladium & oxalis, it has just been such a process! I wanted to have the plants going through the process to show, which is a several months long thing.

    Totally agree with you. People need to understand that having plants is all about trial and error. What works for you may not work for everyone. ie. I water my plants less often but with a large quantity, others might water more often with less water. Its what works for you and your conditions that make plants thrive.

    It's definitely trial and error. Somehow, I can keep a fiddle leaf fig going, but can't manage a spider plant for the life of me. so in addition to low/high light situations in one's home, people have to remember our care patterns can greatly affect our plants as well!

    Harli wading into the treacherous waters of lighting controversy again.. You go girl! 😂👍 One variety I always tell people is NOT a low light plant is a Marble Queen Pothos. You can keep it in low light. If you do you'll keep it alive but it will hate you and look sad. Now depending on the type of watermelon Pellionia you have the lighting is different. I find the trailing variety (repens) does better in brighter indirect light as opposed to Pellionia pulchra which can go to almost partial shade. Now if you're light challenge in your cave two plants that should definitely be on your list are Pilea involucrata (Friendship Pilea) and Pilea cadierei (Aluminum Plant) They're like plant vampires and almost hate light! 😆 Well, in the words of Forrest Gump, "and that's all I'm going to say about that" 😁💕🌱

    • @ThaoNguyen-hl6mb
      @ThaoNguyen-hl6mb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In general, people shouldn't keep variegated plants in a low light environment. Variegation is caused by the lack of clorophyll units which lowers the efficiency of photosynthesis. So when the plant is starved of light, they would adapt to produce more clorophyll and loses their variegation. There is no way to tell if variegation loss is permanent or not.
      On the other hand, plants containing other color pigments (red, yellow, orange, blue) are more efficient at light harvesting as they also capture green lights which are transparent to clorophyll. They would make really good houseplants by thriving on artificial lights. For example: rubber plant, black ZZ.

    Oh my Harli, some people are too sensitive, owning plants is and always will be trial and error, we are all learning from each other, I'm just enjoying your channel so much, and I do agree on some of the varigated varieties, they can go duller, it just depends on where they are placed, once again trial and error. I live in southern Idaho and it of course is super cold in the winter, and hot and dry in the summer, so growing plants indoors is always different. Have a great day and keep smiling you are doing a super job!

    If people live in a building that has limited access to direct sunlight, they can still invest in artificial light. And no, I'm not talking about the fancy grow lights. Before grow lights are advertised as such, urban/indoor farmers have learned that certain commercial lights, which meet certain requirements, can supply sufficient light diet to their plants. What to look for: 1. Color Temperature 5000-6500K: it corresponds to the range of wavelength that plants can absorb and convert to energy and 2. Intensity at least 1600+ lux (or to some extend lumens): compared to natural daylight at 10,000 - 25,000 lux, this intensity is appropriately classified as "low" light for plants to thrive but it's as bright as a floodlight bulb to human eyes. So how to increase the intensity without burning your eyes? Bring the plants as close to your light source as possible.
    To sum up in a layman's terms: Buy quality, high-intensity light bulbs labeled 5000+ K, 1600+ lumens (preferably CFL or LED to save energy) or Invest in a grow light setup.

    Another thing about peace lily: they do well on low lights but if you want them to produce flowers more often, you have to put them in a medium indirect light. If you keep them in a low light area, they may never bloom. Another thing is if you keep them root bound, it can put it’s energy into flowering.

I gave it prime real estate in the brightest (still low light) window I have and it grew to 3 ft tall and split the pot it was in. ZZ seems so versatile, It appears to like low light but takes off in brighter light.

    Its trial and error... what may works for you, may not work for me!, And I say this because I used to have my fittonias (white and red) in indirect east facing light in my living room and usually dry air, only in winter we use humidifier and they both didn’t grow at all , until I decided to put them in the bathroom with NO windows, no lights other than when someone is in it, but everyday humidity from 4 people taking showers and they are doing great, growing like bushes!🌱🌱 I discover this by accident when I wanted to give them more humidity for a couple of days and they started to grow within the week... and yeah a couple of day means I got busy and didn’t take them out for the week, I figured they are ok tomorrow will do it!🌿

    Oh no that gorgeous calathea makoyana definitely needs more humidity! The crispy edges are the signs! (but it may also be the water that you use to water them, those picky lil bastards 😂)
    And the one thing that I learned about peace lilies is, they’re super tough and definitely can thrive in low light. I have 3 and they’re all placed near a north facing window, one is even beside a plant shelf (which means it gets lesser light) but they all thrive for me! The one that gets the least amount of light put out new leaf for me every couple weeks! So I’d say you’re absolutely correct when you classified them under low light plants! Love your videos btw! Keep it on!!✌️

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I keep him right next to my humidifier! I actually ordered that guy off of hirts.com & I think they pumped him full of a chemical filled fertilizer & it burned the leaves :( I got multiple calatheas from hirts & they all have that problem. Even though I have them sitting inches away from a humidifier & I water them with purified water they are still crispy! I just don't get it!

      @js.sheng1122 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harli G Urhhh I totally understand how you feel! I absolutely adore calathea but they can be so fussy sometimes!
      Have you tried repotting them in new soil? You could also try to mist them every day, that’s what I do to mine and they seem to enjoy it. ;)

      The "Jewel Orchids" are extremely variable with respect to their likes/dislikes. The Ludisia discolor kind of loses its awesome dark red/green colored foliage and kind of "fades" if it gets too much light. It does still need to be warm, and have a fairly good amount of humidity. I pot mine up in a huge, shallow (4" or so, drill out some drainage holes, put small "feet" around the pot, and a towel or smaller saucers to catch the excess moisture if you overwater, and I tend to water them well, because they ARE still orchids, so I give them well-drained soil) with a mix of 50% potting soil and 50% Orchiata fine orchid bark. Then I lay the canes down onto the soil, and the roots feel like Velcro, which allows them to hang onto the forest floors or on mossy rocks in their natural environment. These roots will sink into the soil, and new growths will give you flower spikes at the ends of the canes. The leaves tend to die on the rest of the cane, and you can pull them off to clean the canes up. You can actually pull the canes off and get new growths in several ways, I usually cut the spent flower spikes off after they finish blooming, then go back about two "joints" from where the leaves remained, and I'll put a bit of rooting gel onto the ends of the canes, and place them right onto the soil, horizontally, and they'll root from both ends, continuing from where the cane rooted on each end of the cane, and at each end of this new cane, you should get a flower spike the following year. Also, if I accidentally drop a cane from the plant while I'm transplanting them, I just put them roots-down (with or without rooting gel) and they'll root if the soil is moist and humid and warm enough. The lighter green ones that have golden veins through them - I think they're called Macodes petola - likes to be kept in a similarly warm, humid environment, with well-drained soil, and these can be potted a bit deeper than the Ludisia, I've found. They do still grow via a rhizome, and thus appear to "creep" in clusters and form smaller colonies than I've been able to get my Ludisias to form, but they'll form 8-9 plants that'll all be attached via the same rhizome, and you can take cuttings of them (I like to leave at least 3 of the little "whorl"-shaped individual plants before I cut them from the rhizome, especially once I get a nice, well-established colony of them. I grow them in 6 inch deep pots, and I usually find that I have to be creative when finding something that's 6" deep and about 12-15" wide in any direction, and that requires the same drilling of drainage holes as above, and oftentimes, if you can find a HUGE bulb pan, that'll do the trick for all of your jewel orchids. I keep mine outside, on the shaded front porch, on the top shelf of my baker's rack that's my outdoor display for blooming orchids in the summer, but I live in New Orleans, so the weather is exactly what they want. Lifting them to the top shelf is no easy feat, especially since my Ludisia will have about 15-18 spikes this year, and that's not the whole plant! The other jewel orchids, I've not grown yet, but I've worked at florists, and the plants that you listed were ones that we'd grow in the shop, with no extra or special lighting at all, so I’d say that you've got it pretty much down to an art, with the only possible issue being that you'd maybe need to water a bit more often than someone who is in a humid subtropical climate like I am. So, the haters are just A-holes who probably wish they had the knowledge, nerve, appearance (as in, they have "faces for radio" and so do I, which is why I'm a commenter, a consumer, but not a creator. Well, not using my name or face. Hehe.) But seriously, don't let the losers like them get to you, because they are simply jealous, ugly, clueless warthogs with the social skills of an amoeba in heat. Wait, they don't reproduce that way… yeah! So that just makes my point more valid! The haters have the social skills of an amoeba in heat! Don't let them change anything about how you are because they want to bring you down to their level, so that they're not the only amoeba looking for some loving on the planet, but you know, we all know, and deep down, even they know that what I'm saying about them is true. Who wants a single-celled blob to hurt their feelings, especially when they're as awesome as you? Definitely NOT you!

Rainy day here so drinking coffee watching videos on TH-cam and planting yesterday's Steve's Leaves order :) :) i ordered it sooo long ago!! I finally got a philodendron brandtianum :) because they only had a few i ordered quick got another philodendron micans and another bridal veil just so it wasn't lonely lol I know you understand how that works. I have dirt all over my fresh mopped floor... but i'm not wearing white lol I have soo much new growth on some stuff i actually cut off all damaged leaves this AM and propagated pothos, rubber tree, begonias,etc... next nice day i want to get some pictures showing trimmed up and again in a month to show how much it helps the new growth take off. I'm working on making things bushy and full so everything can look really good this summer.
    I am really thinking about a Instagram for my plants. I like socializing with other plant crazy people. Until TH-cam i felt alone Lol I don't know anyone locally with a passion for plants like me.
