Classic. I remember my chemistry teacher challenging the class to try and SING this, and if anyone successfully did so they would automatically get an A and not have to show up to class 🤣
lol, my teacher did as well and I actually ended up doing it. In fact, it did it for my school talent show when I was in jr high. even got a standing ovation, it was very surreal. If memory serves me correctly, the teacher gave me the A. I can still sing it to this day.
Those are the ones moved to the bottom for more space; look closely because after 56 is 72. 57 is continued at the first element of the top collum. After 88 is 104, as 89 is continued at the first element of the bottom collom. The 30 elements at the bottom were moved to save space.
This song was written before lawrencium was discovered. The remaining 29, in order of appearance on this song, are: neodymium, neptunium, americium, uranium, europium, lutetium, lanthanum, protactinium, thorium, thulium, ytterbium, actinium, gadolinium, samarium, holmium, erbium, terbium, dysprosium, cerium, praseodymium, plutonium, promethium, curium, californium, fermium, berkelium, mendelevium, einsteinium, and nobelium.
2010 update: Nihonium was Ununtrium Flerovium was Ununquadium Moscovium was Ununpentium Livermorium was Ununhexium Tennessine was Ununseptium Oganesson was Ununoctium
i sang this in science class today the same speed and everything and i got 50 extra credit points! go tom leher your awsome the whole thing is brilliant
The first time I've heard this song was during Chemistry class at Drexel. Dr. Longo was a fan. Thanks for posting this along with the updated information.
Roentgenium (1994) Copernicium (1996) Flerovium (1998) Livermorium (2000) The creator of this video was clever enough not to incorporate elements that hadn't been named (confimed) yet. The existence of these four elements wasn't recognised widely until after the creation of this video.
If Tom Lehrer could've waited two years to make his song, Lawrencium could've been in it. And he would've completed the Lanthanide/Actinide block of elements.
One thing I can't figure out is why the animator inserted a picture of Saturn over the word "uranium." This element, of course, got its name from the planet Uranus, which the animator should have used there instead.
for some reason my science teacher showed us this in year 7, she also asked us to try and count the elemnts while they were said, who the hell is that mean???
I did, in my first semester of Voice Class at El Camino College in Torrance, CA. in 1986. And I performed it at the Final Recital and, apparently, brought down the house! :)
there are 118 discovered elements. however, there are only like 115 elements that have permanent names. 116 became LIVERMORIUM and 114 became FLEROVIUM. the unun- series is temporary
All you need to do is take each piece slowly, and then put all the pieces together until you can recite it from memory! If I can do it, everyone else sure can.
On _NCIS,_ Abby Sciuto played this song and gleaned clues to a plot, from the atomic numbers in it. The script writers never acknowledged Lehrer. Sounds to me like he had grounds to sue.
@@privatehand not sure I understand the question. As far as in the periodic table, it's just the rest of the 7th row. If you're talking about in the video, the updated info can go in the comments or description.
My science teacher told us that he would hive 25 extra credit points to whoever sings this song in front of the class (points depending on memorization) So far, I've got all the elements up to thallium :D My throat hurts a bit though...
The song is from 1959, when only 102 elements had been discovered. The video is from 2010, when only 111 elements had been officially recognised and named (though 112-118 had been synthesised and were awaiting recognition).

My chemisty teacher said that if one of us could memorize this in one week (full speed) he would give us an automatic A. THANK YOU BECAUSE I DID IT.
Me wondering what school you were in lol
Same without the full speed so I’m lucky
Wow. I wish i could do that
Our 8th grade science teacher doesn’t give homework for our chemistry unit to people who memorize this
@@what_27i memorized all-
I only know Hydrogen to Larenicium
But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral I am the very model of a modern major general.
Fantastic. Have always been a fan of Tom Lehrer and now I can even learn all those elements off by heart.

I want my techer to do that.
@@mcxopjesh That's sick!
my science teacher showed us this this year and i wouldn't stop smiling and i think this song is addicting
It's very much addicting. For me since 1968 when I was 10. I'm now 65 and it still helps me keep my brain sharp.
I'm addicted to elements now only because of some songs, this being 1.
Those are the ones moved to the bottom for more space; look closely because after 56 is 72. 57 is continued at the first element of the top collum. After 88 is 104, as 89 is continued at the first element of the bottom collom. The 30 elements at the bottom were moved to save space.

Nihonium, Moscovium, Tennesine and Ognassion (2015)
Yeah, I oughta fix this someday.
you better wait a few years. No needt to hurry
2010 update:
Nihonium was Ununtrium
Flerovium was Ununquadium
Moscovium was Ununpentium
Livermorium was Ununhexium
Tennessine was Ununseptium
Oganesson was Ununoctium
This is the best animation I've seen for it!! It really helped to learn it, thanks!!
All my friends hate this song. I told them to shut up.
You need better friends.... or better drugs.
Wait, whaaaat?

lol I like the dancing "i"
What does that foot have against gadolinium and niobium?
The sole of the shoe. Hah!

you really did a great job with the animation!
1:15 Here is why Alfred can sing
And there are 110 elements in All….
But the original is 118
Thank you! And thanks for watching.

i sang this in science class today the same speed and everything and i got 50 extra credit points! go tom leher your awsome the whole thing is brilliant
When I was in school, it seemed to be established that element 105 was Hahnium- why did they change their mind and call it Dubnium?
72 is hafnium and 105 is dubnium because element update?
why not rogentinium, copernecium, nihoium flerovium, mosovium, livermorium Tennessine and ogammeson?
I don't know how to spell them. 😁
@@privatehand Then how do u spell the elements at 1:27
It's in the part that goes "Palladium, promethium, potassium, polonium". It's red with a little devil's tail.
If we can sing this. we get an A from our teacher this is going to be a hard time...
if you can sing it? i have to memorize it!
Did you do it?
yup i got an a!!! wooo
Noa Van Dijk if i sing this song to my teacher i get a free meal from dary queen
I learnt it when i was 12, I didn't have too I was such a chemistry geek, I'm 13 and still am xD
It is now my goal in life to memorize this song perfectly.
Did you manage?
The first time I've heard this song was during Chemistry class at Drexel. Dr. Longo was a fan. Thanks for posting this along with the updated information.
very nicely made video thank you!
You're most welcome.
There are now 118 elements.
I love Tom Lehrer. i had actually forgotten about this song till i watched an episode of NCIS where the song was played. i love it.
Finally memorized it all. Achievement unlocked.
I've just updated it to include all 118 elements. Follow the link in the description.
only 114 in there 🤦♀
I saw this flash video on your site pre-youtube. :-)
I didn't really NEED to youtube it but it seemed like a good way to spread the gospel of St. Thomas. ;^)
:-)
@PaoValkova i have to memorize it for my science class and that is the only way i can. so if i got it on my phone i could practice learning it more.

I remember watching this in my class back then (2011).
We're going to need to update the song sooner or later. The list of elements discovered after the song was written is getting quite long.
Excellently done, especially the Gilliamesque use of a Nobel visage.
(...ignoring the misspelling of 'wolfram'....)
Man brings me back to 6th grade.
Brilliant!
I can almost keep up now!
I was singing that in my science lessons
And if you don't stop we're going to have you vivisected.

118-4=114
@syahirSQRT2 actually he also forgot element zero
She also showed the soft picture to do awkwardly
I have about to "thallium" memorized and have for several years, but after that i struggle, lol!
thanks for the video
There are 102 elements in the song and 110 including the end screen. I keep on being told I'm wasting my life but I'm not sure why.

i learned all the elements in this song now to show my science teacher
Random from 1 to 118
@haasr12345 you're not alone
Now imagine an update with elements 103-118 (Lawrencium to Oganesson)
