RIP to my friend of some 30 years, John Goodsall, truly one of the finest guitarists I have ever seen in a lifetime of seeing GREAT players. His passing shocked me to my core.
I just couldn’t believe it when I heard I’m so sad and I also saw fire merchants number of times beyond Brand X Rest In Peace ☮️ John Goodsall and Doug Lunn 💔😞💔
I agree. John was a head and shoulders above most musicians/guitarists. Brand X was/is a remarkable and inspirational phenomenon. I love listening to them, but it's clear that 'the higher the mountain, the thinner the air' analogy still persists when it comes to those who can either play or, else, appreciate the artistry.
Isn’t it nice to find that there are 87,000 plus people out there who don’t think that you’re a bit odd, because you like this kind of music (even family members are left a bit flummoxed by this 😂). I discovered Brand X when I saw them on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1979 when I was in my late teens and immediately bought their third album Product. In total I have four of their albums now and while I couldn’t in any way be described as a die hard fan, nor am I a musician, I make no apologies for thinking that this music is stunning a lot of the time and excellent the rest of the time. Weather Report is another example. Mysterious Traveller is almost hypnotic.
Lovely version of possibly their greatest composition. Like proper jazz musicians they're 'in the moment', bending the music and improvising, whilst constantly looking to each other for cues. Fabulous.
I totally dug Brand X “Live Stock” as a kid.....saw them in hometown a decade or so ago with Pierre Moerlen on Drums....they played quite a big venue....it was a great gig albeit being very scarcely attended.....
My alltime favorite band since high school mid 70s. Used to cruise around with this shit cranked. I have every brand x album and still listen through my collection. It was Phil's band. His "side" project from Genesis. When Phil had to give his time & attention back to Genesis, the brought on the fabulous drummer, Kenwood Dennard, but when Phil could swing it, he always played with them.
@@bobbyshroyer440 It wasn't "Phil's band". Yes, Phil played with them, but he was considered only as a paid guest musician (on advice of Genesis' manager Tony Smith). He was never part of the ownership of the band, which was (at the time) Jones, Goodsall, and Lumley. Phil was asked to play with some guys who were jamming, and they ended up creating the band "Brand X", but while Phil was asked by Brand X to be a founding (ownership) member, he declined on advice from Tony Smith.
@@panurge987ok, thanks, I don't mind being "corrected". Some people have a propensity towards always having to correct others. I do lean towards that myself... What I do know for certain is that I saw them live at "Bogarts" In Cincinnati right after Unorthodox Behavior was released with Kenwood Dennard on drums. Everyone else was there...Percy AND the percussionist. Amazing experience! Front row back when Bogarts had seats AND tables! Got a very decent Magnovox (I think) could be Phillips, a nice medium priced cassette recorder to this day!
Got to agree, the one missing ingredient for years was Phil’s incredible drumming, although respect to Chuck Burghi who did a wonderful job on Masques. Kenny is the missing piece that completes the new band, replicating Phil’s energy, snap and push. So glad this incredible music lives on.
I feel so lucky to have bought their albums back when they were creating this amazing music. Then, being able to see them playing live on this tour (2 nights in a row) different cities.. one a very small venue. I still have a Brand X baseball hat signed by the entire band. Due to lack of communication with friends because of Covid . I have only just discovered that John Goodsall has passed away. RIP , condolances to his family and friends. Only found out because on 1st May 2022 a very good friend of his and mine Ric Parnell died at 70 y.old . I saw one of Johns first gigs with Carol Grimes Delivery supporting John Mayall's Bluesbreakers when John was about 15 . He and Ric went on to Atomic Rooster and other local bands. Always were at parties I went to playing guitar and drumming in corner of the room. Wrote many funny songs with John as he was usually funny or laughing because of substances. John had a wife and small child and I used to drive mates to his house outside London to see them. Eventually both John and Ric went to USA and John helped form Brand X . Brilliant guitar work on their albums and many other sessions and Ric played in many bands eventually getting the gig with Spinal Tap playing and acting as brother of one of the exploding drummers. Both really great musicians, Ric came from a line of drummers in his family, his father Jack was drummer and arranger for all of the music on the Muppet Show and was an excellent big band and jazz drummer . Very sad to have heard of the deaths of both John and Ric RJ. Both products of the music scene in South West London in the late 60's early 70's and good mates of mine.
