Dr Charles Swithinbank MBE WHO MAJORED IN GEOGRAPHY AT OXFORD 1946, STARTED HIS ANTARCTIC CAREER IN THE 1959 (MY BIRTH YEAR) RECEIVED THE POLAR MEDAL, The Mrs Patrick Ness Award, The Royal Geographical Society award, The Anders Retzius medal, The Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography, the Patron's Medal, The Mungo Park Medal, and many other awards from universities and research units around the world, said to be at the time the No1 person for first-hand experience of Antarctica, The Swithinbank Moraine was named in his honour. As were 6 Antarctic regions, He was the author of many books including 40 years on ice, VODKA & ICE (a year with the Russians in the arctic) Foothold on Antarctica the first multinational expedition, lived at the Scott polar research centre for many years at a time, was a consultant on many documentaries about the polar regions, he said. "It's cold up north, even colder at the bottom"
