- In 1863, prospectors discovered significant amounts of Gold, Lead, and Silver in the mountains that are now part of the Galena mining district. Soon after this discovery, the Galena ghost town came to life.
In the early 1870s, the population began to increase liberally. In 1873, there were 300 residents, two hotels, and four general stores.
Shortly after 1875, the population exploded, creating a boom town. Galena now contained a cemetery and city park. The population was now well above 450 residents.
The population began to decrease in the early 1880s.
Tragedy struck in 1889 when the mill and assay office burned down. - because of the decreasing population coupled with the fire. The mill owner decided not to rebuild. Due to this inconvenience, active mines had to truck raw minerals down the mountain for processing, which was a major undertaking and a great expense that made mining nearly unprofitable for the smaller mine operations. Then all the mines shut down, and the once thriving town was essentially abandoned.
However, there were some revivals. In the early 1900s, three mines began operation. But none managed to last even a decade.
In the 1960s, two mines began active operations. And were abandoned in the 1970s.
This marks the end of mining for Galena. Now, it sits permanently abandoned, without any other revivals. But, the shell of this once important town still remains. Join us as we explore this unique ghost town with a rich and luscious history.

Thank you for another cool exploration Dave. Many generations of mining there. Looking forward to next week
Thank you!
Great explore - that rain sounded like hail !
Thanks! It was a bit of a mix between rain and hail. It was on and off throughout the evening.
Hello Dave allways nice to tag along on these adventures looking around and sitting down wondering what these areas were like way back .And yes that scarper most likely with a little grease would work once again looked like it was all cable drive as well .Looking forward to part 2 in your new adventure p.s. wheres your little buddy the pup .A while back i thought you were in north Idaho going to school ? Any way thank you for the exploring ⛏️🇺🇸🤔
Thanks for joining the adventure! Part 2 is coming soon. My pup's still with me. I'm still in school and living in Idaho, but I do travel a lot, which gives me the opportunity to explore places all over the states. Thanks for tagging along!
Looks like a old movie set!
It would make an awesome movie set.
I’m guessing cyanide barrels, placer mine pit, pumps for, water, stamp mill, rock crusher, tumbler. Might be good area for a metal detector
Nice explore. Cant wait till next week. Thanks.
Thanks!
It really sucks people destroy these places instead of keeping them nice so you can stay there and camp out? Really stupid people! Unless the bank took it back and the owner destroyed it?
At 21:34 that is a trommel. Basically a rotating classifier.
Yes,I remember that video with all the snakes🐍🐍 That was really crazy!
Great video dave not been watching much TH-cam lately because my sons had an operation. Will try catching up though take care from the UK 😁✌️🤟💯
"Hey there! Thanks a lot for your kind words! I hope your son is doing well after the operation.
Thanks dave 🤟💯
Hope your son is on the mend as well Stephen...
What city and state we just checked out some stuff south of state line on sunday
This was filmed in Northern Nevada.
Ah okay, I googled Galena and first listing was a ghost town in South Dakota with same name.
What state ?
Nevada.
Is this south Dakota or Nevada, just curious. Great video. Wow snow in the middle of summer. This has to be over 5000 ft elevation.
The building was probably offices and the ceiling wasn’t falling down if you look at it closely, it’s probably a vent hood of some sort because why would they put wood sideways on the wall to hold it up?
What part of the country is this? Thx
Nevada
@@DaveSuzukiExploration thx
Dave you should invest in snake gaitors if you are hiking in areas where you have seen rattlesnakes before. Roughly $50
I have a pair of gaitors in my car. I don't always use them, but if somewhere looks like Snake Haven, I wear them!
Barbed wire is animal fencing, they had their own meat or milk. Possibly just horses.
Amazing place🏚
Interesting town and very old. Left behind Caterpillar scraper was a cable operated pull type. Cable operated construction equipment became obsolete in the 1950's. Probably only value when abandoned was scrap metal pricing.
Thanks for the info! That would explain why they left it behind.
The first block building was a mine assayer's office and lab.
Someday......I will find the home of a graffiti "artist" and COVER IT FLOOR TO CEILING with my own brand of "artwork". Then have a hidden camera so I could enjoy the reaction.
That’s a trommel! To shoot water over crushed roch to put it to a sluice box to get the gold!
What state is this in ? Thanks
Nevada.
Re: Ore bin. Thankfully the vandals haven't burnt this.
At the beginning around the first house and after that there can be heard sometimes hens..
are these wild now, maybe from a old farm or from the ghost town??
Likely wild. This is pretty far out in the middle of nowhere.
Barbed wire is there for a horses and cow,
21:35 it looks like a trommel
How in the heck can It be snowing must be summer time if it's still light at 7:30 in the evening That's too weird you must be way up and some high elevation I don't know It looks like Nevada that definitely looks like Nevada the desolation I've lived in Nevada when you said it's starting to snow I saw a couple flakes wow snow in the summer very strange and very weird town anyway cool video thank you.
Thanks for watching! It's definitely an unusual sight to see snow in the summer, especially when it's still light outside in the evening. You're right; the location does have some high elevation, this was filmed in North Nevada, near Idaho. Stay tuned for more adventures!
Trommel screen
Music sucks!
Aww, I'm sorry to hear that!
Music isn’t bad, it’s just to load. I can’t hear what your saying when the music is playing. Great video though. Thank you!
👍
