BTW, especially enjoyed the wide variety of ammunition used in this video. I've found the Micromax to be quite omnivorous, although in .380 I prefer 90gr hollowpoint or above and it handles plusP flawlessly.
I got a used Micromax in .32, which is very similar to the .380 model, at my local gun shop for $280 with 2 boxes of ammo and has become my new pocket pistol. Very cool little gun and with my experience using a full size 1911, this gun is really well manufactured and put a big smile on my face when I got it.
I picked up a Llama Especial .380 on Gunbroker a couple weeks ago. Near as I can tell it was made in the 1950s. It’s a mini 1911. I cleaned and lubed it, and it works great. I never use steel jacket ammo, so don’t have that worry. It’s a handy little thing.
Graham, can you make a comparison video between Llama Micromax .380 1911, Rock Island Baby Rock .380 and Browning .380 1911? I'm curious which one is actually reliable.
So I bought this pistol and 3 shots into the second magazine the left side of the safety fell out. Sent it back 3 weeks ago. They said there was a problem with a certain lot of serial numbers and mine was one of them. No idea when it will be replaced. 3 Jun 19 - Got a call from American Arsenal and Armory this afternoon. Lady said that my new gun came in and the armorer checked it out and failed his test and inspection. Llama told them that they are retooling some of the parts and the gun will not be available for another 90-120 days. I was offered the opportunity to wait for the new gun or they would ship me a new Llama Max 1 .45. I chose the Max 1 .45. Game over.
Bought this a week ago. First time out, half way thru the second magazine the left side of the ambedextrious safety fell out. Wasn't expecting that out of a brand new gun. Shipping back tomorrow. Guess I should have known better. The Baby Rock shot well except for the ridiculously stiff trigger pull.
Really enjoy your videos. I like that you are getting two shooters who have very different physical characteristics to shoot the same pistol and provide feedback.
MSRP is $399 right now. Graham, I really appreciate your reviews. More importantly, my WIFE likes your reviews! She enjoys the joint effort and seeing a smaller woman shooting. On the strength of your Micromax reviews, especially the EXCELLENT shooting review, I bought her one. Then a VERY gently like-new used Micromax just jumped out of the case at a local gunshop, right into my hands! It wasn't my fault! At $200, I basically stole it and I was surprised to even find a used one. Fun as hell at the range! I've wanted a Llama IIIa since I was a kid and had a cap gun that was an exact copy of the IIIa. Oh the gloriously dangerous toy guns of my youth! I'm so pleased to see the IIIa being produced again in a modernized version! Anyway, PLEASE keep up the good work. We will be supporting you through Patreon and I am linking your videos thru social media to as many friends as possible. I may even talk my wife into a "couples" video review of the Micromax, in cooperation, not competition, with your efforts. I know demonetization and firearms bias has hit gun channels especially hard! Best wishes and warm regards!
Thank you for your support. These videos are made in support of articles I write for AmmoLand.com and LoadOutRoom.com. Don't forget to join us over on Facebook.
Nice video. Seems like a decent gun. I am a Bersa fan and have had issues with the TulAmmo ammo on both my .380 and 9mm. Other than the TulAmmo both guns will run anything except that. Gun dealers that I have spoken too express the same concerns and most that I spoke to don't sell it.
These pistols often get a bad rep due to cheap metallurgy and problems with feeding hollow points and steel cased ammo. I had success with polishing (ONLY polishing) the feed ramp to a smooth surface which made it much more reliable in feeding hollowpoints. Unfortunately, there's not much to do about the cheap metallurgy except to replace worn parts as needed. For example, I had alot of stovepipes when I bought mine used and this was due to a damaged ejector. Once the ejector was replaced the stovepipes no longer occurred. Theyre cheap handguns but with a little DIY work done to them they can be improved upon.
The old Llama Micromaxes were a good idea, but the execution was not so great. This is the new version, and looks like some nice improvements have been made. The design and presentation are pretty impressive for the reasonable MSRP. They are advertising it as a carry gun, and it is lightweight at 23 ounces, so it's for those who have to have something 1911-esque in a *relatively* light carry piece (there are much smaller .380s, of course). Though that may seem like a pretty small audience, its looks will move some units anyway. With new ammo designs, .380ACP has experienced a resurgence in popularity, and clearly works for many shooters, so it's good this option exists. I don't advise ordering the nickel version of the Micromax. The finish might disappoint there. Only if you can inspect and approve an in-store unit should that be on the table.
While the stainless finish versions aren't out yet, these are being made by Metro Arms who makes an excellent stainless finish. Take a look at our Bobcut video.
So I saw the review on the Baby Rock, and now the Micromax. But the Llama had issues. The llama looks a bit nicer. Did those issues have more to do with how the gun was held?
I got one. It didn't fair to well. I have to send it in for repair. The firing pin retainer kept sliding off and jammed into the hammer. It was fun to shot and very accurate little gun.
Hi Graham, a nice review. I also bought one-and had the exact same experience as Kit. The firing pin retainer slipped down after one round, jamming the slide open against the hammer. In that first instance, I took it home from the range and figured out what the jam was, and did a second cleaning-the pistol came soaked in cosmoline type grease. This time I took the firing pin assembly out and cleaned the pin/spring and the tunnel. It tons of packing grease in there! Second trip to the range...two rounds fired, same result. Another jame from the firing pin retainer slipping downwards out of place. Eagle Enterprises uses a network of four US gunsmith for warranty work. I sent mine to the smith in Oregon. It’s been gone almost five weeks-from 11/27 to yesterday, when he shipped it back...to be fair, it has been over the holidays. Pleasant experience, but I had to pay to ship it in for warranty work. I’ll comment after I pick it up and shoot it after the repairs. I can say that I sure do like the grip feel and how the gun points...it feels pretty good on my hands. I also own a Browning 1911-380 (compact slide) , which is a very sweet gun. So far, I felt like the LLama feels a bit better in my hand, so I hope it shoots as well.
Mine has not come back yet. I send it in on 11/14 to the gunsmith in CO. I contacted the gunsmith by email, no response. I emailed Eagle Enterprises main office. They said the will contact the gunsmith for me. I have not heard anything back. Gun was a good little shooter. Sure would like to get it back soon. Kit
Not sure why everyone complains about steel case ammo. I use it in my AR, AK, & 1911. Not once have I had an issue. Maybe I'm lucky or it's just that I keep my firearms clean at all times.
The original micromax was abit different: 1, it was hard to rack..I mean hard. It did not have the nice sights, or the grip extension on the magazine. Mine continually stove piped. It had a dull finish. Well made, life time warranty, but company vaporized. Glad to see it back and improved.
So I went back to the Rock Island .380 the Baby Rock that you obviously are referring to as I am a little confused about why you said that pistol didn't work out for you. I used your review on that gun to buy one today. Now I just found your review on the Llama Micromax. Your comments seem to indicate that you didn't care for the Baby Rock yet you gave it a very good endorsement with exception of the front sight. So which is it? I get it about the sights. But you didn't mention the problem with the slide lock in that review. But yet you mention it in the tabletop review of the Llama .380. Had I viewed this one first I probably would've gone with the Llama .380. Guess I should take the reviews with a grain of salt. But wonder if they are really honest reviews.
From what I have seen and read about the Baby Rock, you made the right decision. Even vs the Browning, the Baby Rock reviews better. Don't regret it. I have not heard a lot of good things about the Llama and you can change the sights on your Baby Rock.
Would be nice to see a muzzle flash test, since most defense situations might be darker. A couple of those rounds caught the big flash on video. Others there is no way to tell if the flash is between the picture frames.
Hey! Is that Geese I'm hearing? Perhaps flying over head? I live in the Pacific Northwest, just north of Finley Wildlife Refuge. And we both see 👀 the Geese flying overhead and hear them honking, for several months of the year! Yup, you've probably guessed it. We're right near the college town know for over a Century as Corn 🌽 Valley!!! Cheers!
Is it rated for +P? Also The only thing I'm not crazy about these 85% 1911s are their limited capacity. Extended mags in the future? Fingers crossed....
I think the Llama would cycle +P just fine. Its the polymer guns have problems with expansion and deformation. I’d have no problem shooting +P out of a 1911 platform. (Maybe not a steady diet of +P but I’d certainly carry it.)
I just re-watched your Baby Rock review and this dude is, in basis, so similar in appearance and design to this Llama that I was wondering if RIA might be OEM’ing it for them. Got any thoughts on this? Thanks! I love the idea of a 1911 .380!
Graham Baates Well, you know Uberti makes the SAA pistols and ‘73 and ‘66 rifles that Cimarron and Taylor’s improves upon after receiving the basic product. After looking at the Taylor’s site after watching your compact 1911 review I have to think RIA is making their basic 1911, too. There’s no way Taylor’s could produce them that inexpensively. So, why not manufacture for Llama, too? They are the world’s largest manufacturer of 1911’s, after all. Anyway, just wondering. It was the barrel design of the Llama that threw me off the fence on this. Two makers deciding on that same design? I think not. Great reviews and format, by the way!
I just saw a new Llama on a firearm dealers website here in 2020. Wait...did I just enter the Twilight Zone? I thought they went out of business years ago.
Ehh...stinky! on the last round fired. Great review and thanks for the ammo reliability test and the cute and sweet pistol review that you wouldn't change a thing which sounds like a buyer and keeper for the collection.
Wish mine worked that well. Less than 20 rounds (Sig) and it jammed up permanent - slide jammed hard. Its in for repair under the warranty. Paid $489. Had high hopes, now dashed. Not a gun I can trust. We'll see when it comes back from repairs.
There was just a little play in the slide - but not enough to position it to get the slide stop out. Did get the bushing and spring and spring holder thingie out. No change. Talked to the warranty gunsmith and he'd never seen anything like it so told me to send it in. He should have it tomorrow. Only parts left in there are the barrel and the guide rod so guessing they got messed up. Didn't feel confident enough to take a mallet to it...so, we'll see what the gunsmith comes up with. I'm happy with repair, replacement, or refund. The hope I had when I first saw it - a .380 with a grip safety - sure evaporated in a hurry after just a few rounds.
Mine has light primer strikes, mostly on the second round, Has anyone taken the hammer spring assembly out yet? Is the screw at the bottom of the grip just in lieu of a roll pin? Also, sometimes the last round in the magazine stovepipes.
The Browning is really really nice! Maybe the valedictorian of the .380 1911 class. But I’m impressed with the Llama’s ability to cycle anything you put through it. The fact that it hates the Tul ammo just makes me like it more! I’d like to see the same ammo test with the Browning. Also, I’d like to see the Underwood ammo included. That’s some really great stuff but not all guns like it.
Browning has a magazine disconnect. Means it will not shoot a live round in the chamber if the magazine accidentally is released. Not sure about the LLama but I do know the Rock Island Baby Rock has no disconnect. Browning is also an aluminum subframe in a polymer lower. LIghter. Better? Worse? you be the judge.
It is still available here in ph, honestly you helped me w/ my 1st gun it is a metro arms commander in 9mm with hard chrome finish what a very reliable and beautiful gun .
@@cuzz63 that doesn't mean anything the Browning version of the downscaled 1911 has a magazine disconnect so it is pertinent to ask. Do you know that or are you just basing it off the typical 1911 pattern
Hey Mr. Bates. My MicroMax has light primer strikes on 2nd round. I think firing pin channel has packing oil in it. You think it comes out like 1911 by pressing down block safety and push pin in and lift the back plate out?? Seems the extractor is held in with roll pin and a separate unit from firing pin? What do you think??
Eagle has a few Gunsmiths around the western part of country and 1 in Texas. I emailed the TX one and he said" send it in". I asked if I can just take out the firing pin like 1911, he replied "there's more involved". No, there isn't. It's relatively easy and I cleaned and polished a few parts. It was a bit cruddy. I still have to fire it to see if it runs good.
David Maxey very hard to find. I saw 2 offerings on gun.deals and now they are gone. I got lucky in my lgs today and got one only because of this review. I came back to check which hollow points they ran.
Same thing. Europeans refer to .380acp as "9mm Short" because Luger's 9x19mm was already around when Browning created 9x17mm (.380). .380acp is 2mm shorter than 9mm Luger hence "9mm Short"
that pistol doesnt work. hang up after hang up. for the same price could buy a tristar canik p-100 or c-100 or walther ccp which are wayyyy better than that piece and these are 9mm which is cheaper ammo. thats just to name a few. DO NOT waste your money a junk cause you think it looks pretty. these pistols i just named you will have zero hiccups and will eat up anything you put in it
Nicely done! Thank you for the time (and expense!) involved with testing such a wide variety of ammo. Best regards to you both...
Thanks for the video, i bought one at a pawn shop an i haven't gone to shoot it yet, watching the video made me really like my micromax.
Interesting. Fun to see different stuff. Good work as always. Love this channel!
Thanks! We do our best to find what's different.
Have a chrome one from the 70's. Had to do some polishing on the feed ramp and barrel feed. Works much better now!!

Granpa always said there is only two things that count. 1 it goes bang every time 2 an eyeball hit with a 22 is better than a miss with a 44 magnum.
HotRodRay yea,but a hit with a 44 magnum is better than both of the above
A 22 will bounce around in you which is more deadly 🤣
@@Ty_beee Only the shorts, a Long Rifle goes right through.

Maybe its greatly improved now.
HOW LONG AGO/
This is NOT the old LLama made in Spain. This is a totally NEW designed gun, and NOT made by the old maker. This gun is made in the Phillipeans.
Would be nice to see a muzzle flash test, since most defense situations might be darker. A couple of those rounds caught the big flash on video. Others there is no way to tell if the flash is between the picture frames.

I HAD AN OLD ONE BACK IN THE LATE 80S . BUT CAN THE NEWER MODELS HANDLE PLUS P LOADS .
I've been looking at baby rock or the Micromax to replace my Colt 1908 Pocket pistol, they are all about the same size
Look at the Browning Black Label also. More money but a sweet gun
Good review! Thank You! I can make a decision.
Cool lil puppy! Reliable, nice finish, a looker! MSRP?
You should try flat nose bullets like Winchester white box or browning brp
Do a video on the Browning 380 Black Label

Single-stacks will always be limited. I don't know about +p, but with a longer barrel than most .380s I don't think +p is appropriate.
I think the Llama would cycle +P just fine. Its the polymer guns have problems with expansion and deformation. I’d have no problem shooting +P out of a 1911 platform. (Maybe not a steady diet of +P but I’d certainly carry it.)
There is no SAAMI spec for +P in .380 ACP. So no one will make guarantees without a definitive limit in place.
A tad large, but makes a good pocket gun if you wear cargo pants.
I just re-watched your Baby Rock review and this dude is, in basis, so similar in appearance and design to this Llama that I was wondering if RIA might be OEM’ing it for them. Got any thoughts on this? Thanks! I love the idea of a 1911 .380!

It is smaller and lighter than an Officers 45. If that little amount really matters... ok maybe. Concealability is equal IMO.

I haven't tried the Browning yet. They won't send one which says something. I prefer this over the Rock Island.

Hey Erica what's your favorite pistol to shoot?
+Slk Ric she says it's a toss up between the MAC Bobcut and Grand Power CP 380
Older Llamas .380 used to be locked breech, and the .32s were blow back, but later Llamas .380 were also blowback.
Is llama micrmax .380 relaiable need your advice and opinion since iwas planning to buy it as my backup edc. Thankyou in advance folks!!
These haven't been imported in several years, so if you find one it'll be used.
It is still available here in ph, honestly you helped me w/ my 1st gun it is a metro arms commander in 9mm with hard chrome finish what a very reliable and beautiful gun .
Nice one...

Where can you find extra magazines?
I recall LLama not being the most reliable guns.
Different manufacturer now
Are these still being imported? I've been looking for a couple months now
I don't know. I know the Llama brand was brought into the American Classic brand so you may need to look there.
How is the recoil?
Where can I get one? I’m from dallas tx
Price on Llama 380
Not for sale
Does it shoot a .38 super?
.380 auto
Does this one have a magazine disconnect ?
No,. its based on the 1911.
I haven't tried to strip my slide yet. That could work. I'd contact Eagle Imports and see what they say.
Cuanto es su precio
Where can these be bought? I've looked but can't seem to find one
David Maxey very hard to find. I saw 2 offerings on gun.deals and now they are gone.
I got lucky in my lgs today and got one only because of this review. I came back to check which hollow points they ran.
Hail to The_Rooster. Thanks for the info
i used 9mm shorts in mine
Same thing. Europeans refer to .380acp as "9mm Short" because Luger's 9x19mm was already around when Browning created 9x17mm (.380). .380acp is 2mm shorter than 9mm Luger hence "9mm Short"
She can shoot.
LOOKS BABY ROCK ISLAND ARMORY!!!!!
Similar
Triger pull
Yes, it does?
Its so cute. Cradle that baby
.380 doesn't have any recoil? Shoot an LCP. :-)
Too many failures to feed / eject to trust my life on for self-defense. I will pass.
Jim Kubitza you know that could just be the ammo.
that pistol doesnt work. hang up after hang up. for the same price could buy a tristar canik p-100 or c-100 or walther ccp which are wayyyy better than that piece and these are 9mm which is cheaper ammo. thats just to name a few. DO NOT waste your money a junk cause you think it looks pretty. these pistols i just named you will have zero hiccups and will eat up anything you put in it
