I’m doing security work at the moment because of covid, and I feel like the guy saying “You can’t kill yourself here, tourist might see you” It’s a desensitizing job
Basically tech creates better living, but if tech companies don't pay taxes, all the profit remains in the companies' hands, leading to the situation described in the song.
What would Jello say? I can tell you what he WOULDN'T say: Alot of the stuff from these old songs. Check out the lyrics to "This Could Be Anywhere". They'd call him a nazi for putting out that song today. Lol, at one point in the song the narrator sings about large numbers of kids from other neighborhoods suddenly being in his school that year (from desegregation bussing programs i would guess). The narrator's instinct is to try to be friends with them, but his father advises him to "stick to your old friends, they're not our kind". Though it portrays this attitude from the father as anachronistic and and racist, but the very next line the narrator bleakly concedes: "...now there's lot's of fights." , vindicating the father's instincts. He also laments neighborhoods being paved over in favor of concrete jungles and ugly brutalist apartment complexes (sounds like section 8 housing projects to me, lol), he laments the prevalence of angry violent young people and gangs, etc. You aren't allowed to critique anything that's minority-coded like that anymore. The line "My dad's gone and bought a gun...says he's fed up with the crime in this town..." seems like it's another attempt at critiquing the father, portraying him as a kind of angry conservative vigilante. But this may inspire you to ask: WHO is doing the crime? Lol, you can see how this is what the libs would call "problematic". I've been amazed re listening to DK, at how many of the things they said would get you labeled a reactionary today. What would Jello say today? Well I took a look at "Tea Party Revenge Porn" from 2020, and it's basically low-effort democrat propaganda. White people bad, etc. It garbage.
