Aberdeen have always had a huge support, it amazes me just how many fans Aberdeen have all across Scotland, England and into Europe mainly as a result of the success in the 80’s but no other club in Scotland can mobilise a city the way a string Aberdeen side can. The whole city and region just lives and breaths the football club.
Jimmy thelin has bring a style of of football that hasn't been seen at granite city for years as a supporter I'm loving his style and the players passion on and of pitch .I'm not to concerned of losing the unbeaten record as I think they will still go on to win more than they lose stand free ♥️♥️😎😎
I think the main change was the mood of the club, the team seemed tense for the past three seasons and with the introduction of Jimmy Thelin, the team seemed to relax and enjoy their football far more. Everyone thought that Duk was a goner, but look at him now, he's flying down the wing, seems more disciplined. Jimmy Thelin just has a different approach mentally, I think, he's quiet, thoughtful and he seems to have a vast knowledge of European players, so it will interesting to see who he signs next year. Wednesday against Rangers will be an amazing match, everyone is buzzing about. Then Celtic on Saturday at Hampden. Both teams will just go at it, goals galore, I reckon.
Really good Pod Kieran very detailed analysis from Michael and John also with Regards to Aberdeen. as a massive Dons fan myself it’s a breath of fresh air under Jimmy right now and long may it continue We go again on Wed nervous but looking forward to the next challenge then the cup semi final also COYR!
Not an Aberdeen fan myself but enjoying them being up there at the top. I’m a celtic fan but I want Aberdeen to keep this going all the way. (Thats working on the assumption we keep it up ourselves of course) and not just for the obligatory “beat rangers” stuff. Just to see another team is great. The buzz. The belief growing. We’re so conditioned to expect it to fizzle out or hit a limit when a non Glasgow team has a storming start. I really hope not.
At last. A podcast engaged with intelligent conversation.. The guys also look like the type of people one would be happy to have a pint with. I may be supporting Celtic -- but I'm rooting for Aberdeen to excel this season. I expect a win on Wednesday; or at the very least, a draw. They obviously found a very good coach!
Congrats on a great, sane, discourse for Scottish football. One of the things to come out of research on Thelin before his arrival was his record of making the pathway to the starting eleven clear, which is a must for big squads for all sorts of reasons - To the point where they kind of know when it's there turn next. That's one of the reasons he gets a tune out of the entire squad, because to a man they know they will be playing an important role.
Great podcast again Kieran. As a Hearts supporter I’m hoping Neil Critchley will get us something similar to Thelin at Aberdeen. I think if Aberdeen can come second it would be an unbelievable achievement in today’s top heavy league. I think the interesting reaction will be when they lose, who it’s against and the manner of it. If they can react like you’d expect Celtic to react for example, then you’d have to expect they will take second and more than probably cup finals if not wins. Very refreshing to see it, I remember the Aberdeen side of old and just how dominant they were, Antonio Conte made a comment during a recent press conference for Napoli, he said “There are 3 things that determine success and successful teams, wage bill, overall squad price and history.” Aberdeen in Scottish terms are up there in all 3.
Cracking podcast. I'm a Celtic fan, but I desperately want to see Hearts, Hibs, Dundee United, and others show the same inventiveness of approach that Aberdeen appear to have done with Jimmy Thelin. These clubs have underachieved on the pitch for too, too long and it's always been clear to me that coaches like Thelin are out there. I always use the Bodo Glimt example to demonstrate how any club can punch above its weight with the right technical direction on the football side.
A good and intelligent manager unites the club and the city, staff, fans and players. He sees the bigger picture. That everyone drives a club foward when they're untied. Very impressive psychology.
Regardless of whether or not Aberdeen can maintain this form, the problem with sustaining any kind of challenge is the same as it was during some of our good runs under McInnes - it’s difficult to see where Celtic drop many points. Even if Aberdeen could reach 80pts, which no non OF club has ever done, it most likely wouldn’t be enough.
What we learn from Jimmy Thelin is, if you hire / sack enough managers eventually you get lucky 😂. Live few months of the year in Sweden, so seen lot of Thelin teams over the years, even watched a youth game when he was manager at Jönköpings Södra IF.. He has been on a "long list" for German jobs in the past, so he has earned a name for himself outside Sweden before moving to Aberdeen. All that said, he has had a chunk of good fortune with some results.. But, more importantly having the players that can adapt to his style. Modern football the first 10-20 games almost set out how fans / players buy into a manager, with lack of money in Scotland, molding a team can take "Years". So its not being a "good manager" thats sets Thelin apart, its his ability to choose which club to join & understanding they have the players to mold into his style. So many good managers lack the ability to judge a club before jumping into the managers job.
It wasn't luck to be honest. He was approached for the job prior to making Barry Robson permanent but it would have been incredibly challenging to offer him the job after the run of wins Robson got out of the team. It's a very intentional move by the club to avoid hiring SFA coaches that are both conditioned to fear celtic and rangers, and deploy a negative set of tactics that requires off the cuff moments from quality players. Managers like Derek McInnes can get good mileage setting up that way, but ultimately progress will stall due to key player injuries and that Aberdeen's squad will never be more individually talented than celtic's.
Seeing a challenge by Aberdeen is FANTASTIC for Scottish football! Rangers and the tribute act have poisoned much of the sport and product that is the SPFL through their cheating and corruption, costing many clubs and devaluing the product; so it is nice to have a new club challenge at the top and making the league more competitive. Hope their success continues and I really hope they get 2nd this season and push Celtic to the wire!
I see it as more of an evolution than a revolution. Lots of progress since Cormack has taken over. He's been good for the club, you could even say he has improved scottish football. According to transfermarket, Aberdeen have the highest transfer profit over the last 5 years and second highest over 10 years, we know how to spot, develop and then sell talent. The young team won the U-18's and you can make a decent team out of ex-aberdeen youth players. Bain, McKenna, Ramsey, O'Donnell, Robertson, Jack, Barron, Campbell, Wright, Fraser, Shankland. Attendance/attmosphere has improved due to the changes in the red shed, the work of stephen mccormick and encouraging kids into the richard donald. New training ground in 2019. Longer contracts for players. Hibs have 15 players who's contract expire this season, Aberdeen only have 5 plus one loanee. Quality staff behind the scenes. (Leven, Rochon, Burrows and Bernhard Peters consultancy is still ongoing.) Although we were poor in the league last season our cup runs were better than average, while in Europe we were competitive in evey game we played. Ain't saying Thelin is the missing peice or we're going to split the OF and be the 2nd best but we have laid solid groundworks for the future.
Its early days at aberdeen but jimmys brought a calmness to the club, hes got a lot of experience of European football also and most importantly the players have really bought into what he wants to do and how he wants them to play, good times ahead and aberdeen should be challenging every year for trophies
Jimmy rightly getting the plaudits, but, there are 3 other coaches at the club in Emir Bajrami, Christer Persson and Peter Leven. Bajrami himself played as a winger for a host of european clubs and I feel the improvement in the wide areas more specifically are down to good coaching from the 3 mentioned, not just Jimmy.
The way in which Thelin dealt with the Duk affair has given the team a sense of loyalty. Thelin has formed an alliance between himself, team, staff and fans.
It is a great start Aberdeen have had but I don't see what all the fuss is about. It is great they have gone for a fresh approach with appointing Thelin and he is clearly having an influence. They have scored some great team goals which is refreshing to see. Having said all that, as bad as Rangers are, I still see Rangers winning on Wednesday. Aberdeens style will suit Rangers.
We need all teams to be more challenging, and for me thats always been down to a managers personality,eg, ferguson,o,niell, smith,m,clean, souness, stein. If you dont have a winning mentality, you dont win! But,watch out for the S.C.F.A!!!
It's refreshing to see a Scottish club outwith the old firm appointing a manager that's outside of the box. Not just a washed up EFL gaffer or one of the recycled coaches that makes his way around the premiership and championship. Watch a bunch of the premiership clubs appoint Scandinavian managers now that it's working for the Dons
We can learn that getting a very favourable fixture list at the start of the season and being given the benefit of the doubt by the officials really helps a team lol....but to be honest ,fair play to them, it'd be good if they could win the league for the sake of Scottish fitba. I don't think they will as there's still a hell of alot of points to be played for ,and there is bound to be a drop in form. They have just nicked some games and perhaps that bit of luck might run out.
We can’t win the games that haven’t been played yet. The results, to date, under Thelin have absolutely been transformative as has his ability to get far better performance levels from the fringe players from last season. Something significant is going on at Aberdeen.
A Celtic fan recently commented online that the Sokler goal came from a “long ball in behind” - take a look at the weight of McGrath’s pass and the backspin on the ball to hold it up slightly! The finish was perfect too. A controversial comment.
I think we will end up 3rd, but I’d be happy with 4th for his first season. But I have to say, it’s no longer the start of the season, we are a quarter of the way through. We didn’t reach 25 points until Feb 3rd last season just after Robson was sacked. There has been a revolution of sorts here, we don’t have to win the league or split the OF for that to be true.
This will not go all the way I reckon Celtic will kick there backside and the league will be won by the end of January/February there is no competition for Celtic this year
Bottom line is this a new manager bounce or genuine title challenge? Last time Aberdeen won the league they had the biggest wage bill in Scotland. Now they have £11.5m vs. Celtic £60m. Until they close this gap, primarily with a bigger stadium, I refuse to believe a non Glasgow team can win the league.
@@khsmith6242 the information is literally on companies house website accounts for season 1984/85. Aberdeen £1.1m, Celtic in 2nd with £1m, Dundee United 3rd in the league with £450k and Rangers 4th in the league with £850k.

Aberdeen changed tactics in the second half against Celtic. They cancelled the slow build up, and the full backs were then forsaken as an attacking force. Jimmy went 4-2-4 with instructions to cut to the final phase at the first opportunity. Support for the forwards then came from the midfield only, Shinnie and Nilsen. Jimmy does have a blueprint, but also tweaks his default tactics in situ. Your point stands though, that its not just morale based coaching but players are now entrained in attacking strategies and positional sense..
