    There's no reason to believe you actually need valves electrically, especially in this day and age! Despite what many may believe valves do get hot but they don't actually 'warm' your sound. I'm not knocking iconic valve amps here but it's about time for technology to move on. We got rid of valves in televisions and they produce quality vision and sound great. The Roland blues cube sounds awesome, doubt many would know the difference. Thanks for a great video guys.

    To the people complaining that it's as expensive as a decent tube amp, and that it doesn't have the features that other "modeling" amps have at that price point...you're missing the point.
    It's priced close to a decent tube amp because that's what it's meant to replace. In my opinion it sounds just as good as most tube amps in that price bracket, and it's lighter, more reliable and a bit more flexible than some budget tube amps.
    And to answer the second question, feature-overload isn't the point of this amp. They didn't spend all the time, money and R&D trying to cram as many bells and whistles as possible into the amp...they chose to simplify it and make it much closer to a traditional guitar amp, and spend the R&D on the important part; integral tone. Quality over quantity.
    Will I buy one for ~$700 USD? No, because I already have an amp I love and don't mind dealing with the compromises in durability and weight. But for the guys dragging an amp all over town, up and down stairs...this could save a lot of trips to the amp tech and the chiropractor.

      ***** When you get another chance to make a video with this amp, *please* do two things:
      1. Use a Les Paul Standard (or ML-2 Classic) and an ML-1 Bea to see how the amp reacts to coil splitting, out of phase pickups, and hot passive pickups. The ultimate test of an amp like this is to see if it makes pickup swaps and such meaningful.
      2. Compare running pedals into the low sensitivity input with running the same signal into a Tech21 Power Engine. In other words, is running into this amp's low input at all superior to running into any other powered cab?

    • @OzziePete1
      @OzziePete1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you are going to do a blind test between this amp & a Bassman could you please run each amp through just one cabinet & switch the amps through it? That way there's a direct comparison. I think the Roland amp would benefit from 2 x 12s btw.

    Got a Boutique 10watts tube amp. Amazing tone. I'm 100 % sure I could never get that tone on a solid state amp... And because it is a hand made amp, I get an almost exclusive tone. I was the happiest guitar player on earth... until the valve issues took place! Tube amps are incredibly sensitive! Any minor issue changes everything and can turn a fun gig or jam session into a very frustrating experience. Tube amps are so unreliable, that if a solid state amp gets up to 80% of a tube amp tone, then it is already worth the shot! This was a very good review! The amp sounded great and I would definitely buy one!

    • @alistairdent9765
      @alistairdent9765 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Modern tube amps can indeed be unreliable, though the only inherent unreliability in valve amps is because valves have a fixed life. The problems modern valve amps seem to have are more often due to design issues such as poor quality valve sockets, running the valves with too hot a bias or pcb mounted sockets with poor physical support so that the solder joints crack.

    I've had one for about two months and have now had a chance to really put it through the paces. I own a guitar school and I am also a gigging musician. I love the ability to switch between the different power modes. It allows me to teach on the amp at tolerable volumes and still get great tone. It also allows me to adjust the power output at gigs to compensate for the size of the room. The amp take pedals very well on the front end and via the FX loop. Nice and light so I don't have to throw my back out lugging from the car to the stage. I really do dig the the tone. Highly recommend this one. Thanks for the great demo guys!

    It's interesting to see the depth and persistence of prejudice against this amp because it's not a tube amp. Reminds me of religious or racial prejudice. No matter how good it sounds, if it's not a tube amp, many people remain convinced it's okay but not really that good: "Well, I'll give it a 9.5 but not a 10 because a tube amp will always sound better." It's an unquestioned article of faith.

      It’s like internet porn...you can have any flavor you want but you’ll never touch it...anyone claiming solid state amps of any variety have an equal or better sound are delusional or tone deaf. Anyone in touch with reality with a normal pair of ears can hear the BLATANTLY OBVIOUS difference between a tube amp and a solid state. I’m not saying all solid state amps suck or anything but it’s not even an argument. Solid state amps are convenient and easier to use but there’s an obvious reason as to why they’re always considered second rate; because they are.

    • @DeltaJazzUK
      @DeltaJazzUK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@DeltaJazzUK I have had to listen to them (unfortunately) and yes they are second rate. I get it you probably like JC clean from roland like every other jazz guy with their tone knobs turned all the way down *sigh*...im sure you're a fine player but don't have jazz in your name and start talking about amp tones lmao Lenny Breau is probably the best guitarist that ever lived but you cant tell me his dull tone had anything to do with it. if you honestly believe tube amps aren't superior you're fooling yourself. tube amps are FAR more dynamic. people that own solid state amps are beginners, people strapped for cash, and people who played a tube amp once and heard all the extra noise their bad playing mechanics made and blamed the amp.

    I've been playing a Quilter Micro Pro 200 (SS/ non modeling) for over a year now and all I can say is it continues to make tube amp purists ( like me) into former purists (like me) with the tone and feel. Plenty of surf, country, blues/rock folks are now toting around these light, incredible sounding little Quilters. This Roland, like the Quilters, will change the amp paradigm I think ...maybe not right away.

  • @bestplans9051
    @bestplans9051 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I purchased one last weekend (60w Stage) used for $300 cheaper than retail and to be honest the tone is amazing. Several players in the store heard it as the salesman and I traded the guitar back and forth and none would believe it wasn't a tube amp until they looked into the back of it. I'm glad it's not a modeling amp because to be honest, I'm not really a big fan of them. They seem to do ok (modeling amps) but don't really do anything great.
    And best of all, I live in an apartment so I can set the power level to 0.5w to practice and if I decide to do a show I simply power up to 60w :). To me it's worth a lot more than what I paid for it, and I agree the retail price is a little hard to fork over but listen to one before you dismiss it. You WILL be surprised :)! Also check out the specs for the power levels ;).

    This amp sounds great, just like the original Blues Cubes years ago. The price point is an issue, or will be for many. I've gigged both SS and tubes for many years and both do just fine in a live situation. The problem - or reality - of cork sniffing tube vs. SS is that the refined, well manicured tone we guitarists go on and on about endlessly is largely lost on the audience in a live setting, and a lot of the subtleties are lost in the mix. Bottom line for me is play what you like. I've had compliments on my tone with both kinds of gear. I've seen guitarists make cheap, almost laughable rigs sound fantastic, and guys with loads of expensive boutique gear sound like ass. It's not an absolute "one is better" answer with tube vs. SS.

So many other gear reviewers give useless reviews with no honest insight. I especially liked how you staggered through this one slowly uncovering the deeper qualities of the amp. Have an Artist 80w. Awesome amp. I had a Fender Deluxe Reverbe custom 68 reissue. Both are so close for tone. So i sold my Fender. Just Keep in mind, you need to cranked the blues cube to get best tone, like a valve amp. I prefer myself to cranck the master volume and to set the volume. But both work, if you cranked the volume and set the master, it's good too. And you need power to have dynamics tones. Same like all amp. Flat sound at low volume even if you use the attenuator.
    Best tones with the artist is at least 15 or 45w position, master at 12, Volume as you want for the gain. And you have great tones & good dynamics. But it's very loud, like all 1x12 of this power.

    One of it's strong attributes is that it has a lot more head room on the clean channel than a tube amp would. And this is a blues amp. So for some people that's an important asset. I think this is equivalent to a tube amp of twice the wattage, so the price is about equivalent. And it also can get great over driven sounds at lower volumes. With an overdrive pedal even a 30 watt version gets savagely loud.

    An important aspect to the pricing I think relates to the meticulous research done to make this sound as authentic as it does. Having a team working on such a project hours on end isn't cost-free!
    If the amp is well received, the next effort could very well be based on much of the work done with this already, making a new effort either comparably cheaper or even better sounding. Just food for thought - have a nice day!

    Wow !!! this amp has blown me away....having been a valve purist for many years (yes ive lugged around mesa boogies, twins, 4x12 cabs and currently using a deluxe reverb) and had all the problems of re-valveing and general maintenance that come with valve amps.. i'm seriously thinking of trying one of these out..... super tone

    I just ordered one. I know it isn't like a tube amp. I have tube amps and I like them. However there is something about the Blues Cube that always draws me back. Maybe it's the faster response time of a solid state amp (that has good tone)... IDK.. I do however love this amp, it may very well be the last amp I buy. Personally I think it is way better than any modeler. It does it's own thing (VERY WELL) much like the Peavey Bandit does.

    Awesome demo as usual!!! This amp is pretty amazing, but as far as the idea of playing dual channels(clean and overdrive) fender already did this in the Fender Deluxe 85 which has a selection called parrallel mode. It was a solid state red knob amp from the late 80s early 90s, one of the best solid states imo, with an amazing fender clean tone and reverb, i purchased 2 of them. I use them for everthing. I have quite a few valve amps new and vintage as well (im a gear hoarder of collector depending who you ask). But i think this blues cube is the next on my list. Thanks for posting!!

    I have an ancient solid state amp circa 1975, bought it new. Marlboro is the brand. Its a clean amp , no dirt at all you need a pedal for that. But in terms of the way it responds to your guitar, it is very tube like. It even has the tremolo and reverb like this cube does. I guess I was ahead of my time.

    I don't understand those who say "for that price I could buy a tube amp". Tubes are not a desirable feature, they are a necessary evil. Only tone makes a 70 year old design with no features worth more than something state of the art. If this thing *really* sounds as good as tubes (or even close) its absolutely worth the price. Very much looking forward to a blind test.

    I owned a Hot Rod Deluxe and gigged with it for years - this amp sounds better. They should've battled this Blues Cube and the Hot Rod Deluxe so they could judge the Blues Cube's authenticity of replicating a desired Fender tube tone.

    • @JELIFISH19
      @JELIFISH19 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A HRD would win simply because it's tube. If you put it side-by-side to a HRD, the HRD will be the reference tone. The BC is based on a Bassman. The BC or a real Bassman won't get close to sounding like a HRD.

    One of the problems I have with a solid state is that it sounds like you are playing the amp and not the guitar--that's why I like the Vox AC series where you get the natural sound of the guitar. However, this amp is an improvement; it sounds natural and not digital.

    it would be awesome to see you guys do a blind test between this, a fender bassman and a modeling amp on the bassman setting. if this is as good as it appears to be, this and the bassman would be difficult and the modeling easier (it would be in there as a controle).

    Been using Roland Bolt 100w valve hybrid as my main amp for 20 years. Roland just now how to make a great sounding mid gain amp. This little solid state combo seems to sound at least as good as many of the valve blues combos I have tried by Peavey, Fender and other makers, so once again they are on the right track with this little box. I now run my 100w Bolt in stereo with a second 60w Bolt and the sound is exactly what I need on stage. I will try one of these when I see one in a store, although I suspect they will start turning up in hock shops soon enough anyhow.

    I actually totally dig this. I've been using tube amps throughout all my playing. I love tubes. But I had a pretty bad back injury, and this isn't the first time. I've been looking for amps like this that use transistor tech to capture the tube feeling. Session Award also makes an interesting looking amp that is very similar in vane called the Blues Baby (modeled after the Blues Jr). I do believe that this might be my next amplifier. It'll be great for gigging, and I can leave my tube amps in the studio.

    I think my main issue with this amp is price. currently $900 in the US, slightly more than a Fender Blues Deluxe.. it's cheaper than an actual vintage bassman, but seems expensive for a solid state amp compared to the tube amps available today. I've seen them cheaper as refurbs and used of course.

    • @Womble1252

      Try to find an original late 90's BC 60 2nd hand -

    • @tdunster2011
      @tdunster2011 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tube amps are easy to build because the designs have been around for years and are readily available as are the parts. A solid State amp like the Blues Cube would not be easy to build as the design is relatively new and I would suspect it to also be more complex than a tube amp.
      So upon what reasoning do you think a tube amp should be more expensive ?
      With respect to price I've never seen a Fender Blues Deluxe cheaper than a Blues cube Artist - so I'm guessing you are comparing retail prices on the BC with street or clearance prices on the Blues Deluxe.
      the only reason I would choose the Blues Deluxe is for the spring reverb - take that out of the equation and the Blues Cube eats it alive for features, reliability, flexibility, ability to play it at low volume and still get good tone, and weight.
      Tone wise the Blues Deluxe is not a pure tube amp anyway due to the solid state rectifier and PCB's rather than point to point wiring - so the difference in tone is more a preference than anything else.

    • @JamesJLaRue
      @JamesJLaRue 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tdunster2011 I think what I meant was the "imposter" amp is costing as much as or more than the "real thing". like generally the fake tube stuff is cheaper and people buy it because they can afford it. but im no purist. my favorite amp of all time is the Micro Cube! most enjoyable shows I've had are when I plug the headphone out into the PA. So I'm all for fake tubes!

  • @Jonathan-L
    @Jonathan-L 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    If anyone wants an amp that sounds like this Blues Cube, but doesn't want to spend as much what the BC costs, then the Roland Cube Lite is worth checking out. Sure, the Cube Lite isn't for pub gig or large stadium, but if you're looking for that sort of tone just for practising at home, then the Cube Lite (approx 75 quid) will surprise you. And if you want more volume, just run it into an active speaker or mini PA. Thumbs up to Roland for making their big amp sound as good as their little amp!

    I am not sure why, but I personally like it when Fender's maple necks have the yellowish tint that the strat has in this video, compared to the very white looking maple on the Tele. I'm not sure why, but it just strikes me as prettier and of course, classic
