You must compensate for different lofts. A little math can do this but it's totally unfair to award the same points for distance when there are different lofts. You can calculate what the others brands WOULD be if they were all the same loft. Or you can divide average distance and loft and get yard per degree or something like that. Or better, learn how to adjust lofts and bend them all to the same loft, overriding the manufacturer's gamesmanship.
I agree, however, players using these dont care if they go far. They just care if they go the right distance for their gapping. The category should be distance consistancy.

I am on 2 seasons and my second set of wilson staff model cb's and I love the feel. That's the only reason I bought them after coming off a Mizuno set I couldn't relinquish for 20 years. Mizuno should be included in this test. Otherwise, it just isn't fair. Afterall, Mizuno is the leader in forged club feel. But Wilson is cheaper and just as good. Gonna purchase a set of Takomo's as well this spring and see where they take me. Thanks Rick. Keep up the good work.
I’m currently an 11 GHIN. When I first got my T-100S set in 2020 in was around a 20 GHIN. I actually improved my swing/scores after moving away from “game improvement” irons to the ones rec’ed for much better golfers than I was. The guy who fitted me was actually quite apprehensive, but I knew what I wanted & was confident I could hit them. Which, obviously, I can now. I honestly think the mental side plays a big role too in the club-fitting. If you are confident you can hit a “low handicapper” iron & the feel/look good to you at address, man, go for it. I absolutely LOVE my T100S set. If price was more of an issue & I were to replace them, I’d prob go w/either the Wilson or Takomo set. The Vice looks ugly to me. Burning reality, when I get my next set in 2-3 years, I’ll prob go the T-150 if they are still selling those.
I hit those Wilson's a couple times in the shop. I found the hardest ball they had there, and they still felt good. Might be something to think about with your feel tests, grab a top flight ball and exaggerated the feel.
I went thru extensive testing with all the brands u tested, sans Vice and Wilson, but I included Mizuno 245, Callaway apex and Srixon zx7 and zx5. The zx5 had the best feel and distance and accuracy for me.
Yeah, this test was worthless. Appreciate you taking the time to do it but not my cup of tee. When you get into lower handicap range you need workability and several other factors.
Distance I think should stay in relation to loft, maybe constant distant in relation to loft, and how far you should hit that loft! Love theses episodes thanks!
Please, you need to teach people that DYNAMIC loft is what is important. The amount of people not understanding this is crazy. Static Loft is just a fitting parameter and you have just the platform to educate the masses.
@GregKuper-c8p Assuming that everyone delivers the same loft relative to static is the issue. I'm saying we need to know both. If we can see the difference between dynamic and static that Rick delivers vs someone who delivers little to no shaft lean, that gives so much more context. Aside from fitting, the OEMs also claim that CG locations and face flexing can alter dynamic loft to manage height. Without Dynamic Loft, how do we validate that claim? Static loft factors into dynamic loft but that effect is specific to someone's swing. It is the most direct path to altering height, but you only know which way to go when you have Dynamic Loft.
Are you thinking about doing this for hybrids? I’m considering upgrading my hybrid this year, and I’m curious how you would rate hybrids. Thanks. I really enjoy your videos.
I tried the Wilson staff demo club at the range and found the carry distance incredibly consistent with only 3 yards of a difference from front to back and only 5 yards left and right of the mid line, however still not updating my V6 irons (just perfect).
I have been playing the Wilson Staff Blades for some time and I agree with the feel of Wilson products, just no comparison to my old Callaway and Titleist clubs I used to play...
I'm not a 'hater' (not even a disliker 😁), but I agree with some of the comments about criteria. Firstly, getting points for distance when the lofts are not the same, is irrelevant and biases what really isn't a 'low handicapper' club. Secondly, since aesthetics is so subjective, it really shouldn't be included. I bet if we (all commenters) ranked them, and tallied the totals, they'd all end up with virtually the same score. Thirdly, front-to-back dispersion is more important to low handicap golfers than left-to-right, so distance dispersion would be a better measure of 'accuracy'. Finally, it should have been a 'points out of 10' scale. If the Wislons felt so much better than the others, and the Takomo were so much cheaper, they should get proportionally more points. Then take away 7.5 yards from the Vice distance for the jacked lofts, and ... we have a new winner. My money is on the Wilsons, (well it's invested in them actually) but hey, I'm not biased 😉
Great review. Anytime a youtuber reviews a Takomo product its important to take it with a grain of salt. Takomo has used TH-cam sponsorship instead of traditional advertising routes to promote there brand. Totally fine but when you realised Takomo has paid out over 1 million us dollars to youtube golfers since 2020 so theres a reason why everyone with a chanel strokes Takomo off like this
Holy crap! Of course, that is correct! I completely overlooked that, and I knew that to be true. Thank you for writing that down and pointing it out.🙏👍👌
Did a full iron fitting at a local Club Champion. Not once was any Vice iron model handed to me. I asked out of curiosity and the fitter said they very seldom do they see improvements compared to other OEMs. Hard for me to believe a company’s first club iteration is “best of the year”
@@boboman-98 Vice is mainly direct to consumer, like Takomo. You likely won’t find a fitter with either of these to try or fit. Just need to know what to order.
@ Club Champion has both Vice iron models which you can be fitted for and hit. I tried them both and was uninspired, as well as my fitter was candid with me in that most folks leave unimpressed by them. Takomo has a better track record where I would trust them over Vice, both from a performance and value standpoint.
Hi Rick! Me and my friends started a TH-cam channel to prove that golf is not boring and is very fun! 🤩The name of the channel is YOUNG GUNS JUNIOR GOLF. Please please please can you give us a shoutout it would really help ❤BTW I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
I know you have alot of irons, can I get a set you don't really want like a Wilson set or really anything else. I have a tommy armour set from 2020 and I hit a set of rbz irons and they were more powerful. I would like a new set of irons if you wouldn't mind sending me something for a 10 handicap
Hey Rick! I really enjoy this lineup of videos! My only request is if there was a chance you could add spin right along with the carry distance. The vice may go the farthest, but how much spin does it generate compared to the 34 degree irons
Rick I’ve not seen you do anything on the Mizuno Pro 245’s. These clubs are probably one of the nicest looking and best performing irons. I actually think you would really like them. Blade like appearance but they have very good forgiveness. Feel class too as you would expect. Need to get a review on them pal 👌
I think you should use the vice for 3 rounds then use the winners of the mid and high handicap irons both for 3 rounds at same club and tally the results. Lengthy test but would love to see results
As always, love your content. Suggestion, would love to see maybe two additions. 1) partner up with a average everyday mid to high handicap golfer to see how they can hit the clubs so we can see how it relates to most of us. 2) when performance testing, find a way to do blind comparisons. Maybe have someone sport wrap the grips, and tape the back side. That's way you have no idea who made what.
Rick, I love these "best of videos" but something just crossed my mind. Although I think this exercise is great, if the Vice irons aren't your current clubs, is the test really judging the clubs on the important metrics you personally use to put a club(s) in your bag?
Had you used a higher point scale or used tenths on your 5 point scale, you could’ve accounted for how much better feel the Staff model is or even the insane price point of Takomo’s.
1st of all, Titleist sponsor by far the most players on tour. 2nd of all, this is a classic example of just because it's best for a tour player, doesn't mean it's the best for the general public. He's correct that the T100s feel the worst out of this test. They still feel decent, but in my own testing they are towards the bottom when it comes to feel.
Man, whatever. I don't agree with him at all. And no way Vice is better than the T100, which I also don't play. Doesn't take a club fitter to know this. But go on with what you think is best. Not trying to argue.
My only complaint about these rankings videos is that each category is equally weighted. Looks and price, while not completely unimportant, shouldn't have the same weight as, say, accuracy and feel. If you were to weight these, it would be interesting to see how your rankings might change in each video.
I would argue that price for most golfers is very important. Especially now that DTC brands are tilting the field with their very good quality products.
I feel like instead of distance it should be distance consistency. For low handicappers they need consistent distance. They don’t want a club prone to huge variation in distance
Not changing my i210s, but if they were stolen and i had to get new irons some of these would definitely be on my list. Vice at 31 degrees for a 7i is not what I want. Takomo reminds me of a Mizuno MP18SC, that is a good thing. But lack of shaft options rules them out. Of the remaining 4 irons I would test the Wilson first - I love the look, if the feel is as good as Rick suggests then a probable winner for me, but I would also have to test the Blueprint S even though the size of the 5i is a bit scary
Shouldn’t you theoretically hit the same lofts to determine if they have different yardages? (Different tech usually brings different yards despite same loft). Like you could hit a 7 on the standard lofts but if the other ones are stronger sets maybe hit an 8 if it’s the same or a more similar loft? That way anything yardage based is all tech disparities and not loft disparities?
I love your content but all of these videos are just too opinion based and not standardised enough. Someone else mentioned lofts, also shaft differences need to be taken into account, and more focused on consistency
I can’t be the only one who thinks the carry distance portion of this test is bogus. Better players don’t care how far the irons go. They’re a better player, they don’t need more distance, they need better accuracy and workability. iron carry distance is irrelevant to a person who can hit their the middle of the club everytime.
tough to do a winner in this section without Mizuno given that they feel great same for Srixon Thing is as well in future the Ping will still hold a decent resale value but cost most so bit of a trade off
If you assigned half points for looks, I think you should have assigned double points for price. Price is a big motivator, especially if performance is pretty equal.
Full points for distance seems so arbitrary considering they aren't the same loft. A more important stat to look at would be stopping power. difference between carry and total distance i think is a better stat to judge especially with a 7.
Srixon ZX7 MKII, Callaway Apex CB, Cobra King Tour CB, Mizuno 243, Takomo 301 CB, all of these are missing which is a crime, doesn’t matter you haven’t tested them, that’s like saying the best selling car in the world is the Vauxhall Astra because you don’t get the F-150 in the UK. Besides, I’m pretty confident seeing your last “Look at all these clubs I received but never took out of the box” video that some or all of these clubs are in a box at the studio. Also, distance should have been replaced with Consistency and Workability should have been added as a criteria.
I have to say I disagree on looks (but then if you ask 6 people you'll likely get 6 different answers). I can't see how accuracy is a valid test as it depends on your performance. I also wouldn't buy irons with regard to the length of their carry, I'd be rather looking at gap fitting. However, I do love watching your videos as they are both entertaining and instructive so keep up the good work.
2 of the 5 categories are subjective and opinionated and another is irrelevant to a better player. Why does a better player care how far his 7 iron goes. Wether a 9 iron goes 142 or 155 is the difference between carrying a 4th wedge or not. This obsession with distance being so important is goofy. Sure with a driver it makes sense. But with irons you should be looking at how consistent they are in hitting whatever distance the 7iron goes. Does it hit 170 yards every time? Or is it 173 sometimes, 167 other times? That’s WAY more important than overall average carry distance. What about spin rates? Stopping distance after carry? None of the actually important stats for better players have been considered here.

Thank You very much for this Review. I love my Vice irons! Long and straight & german Engineering!
ZX7 was top 3 iron of the past few years according to the trophy shelf. A true classic.
Ricks club reviews are an absolute joke. Clueless.
More points for less loft. God damn clown at this point.
Srixon zx7 MKii doesn’t make this list?
Yeah, this test was worthless. Appreciate you taking the time to do it but not my cup of tee.
When you get into lower handicap range you need workability and several other factors.
Distance I think should stay in relation to loft, maybe constant distant in relation to loft, and how far you should hit that loft! Love theses episodes thanks!
Please, you need to teach people that DYNAMIC loft is what is important. The amount of people not understanding this is crazy. Static Loft is just a fitting parameter and you have just the platform to educate the masses.
Does static loft not factor into dynamic loft? I think it might . . .
Take away looks - Here are the rankings:
Vice VGi01 - 21
Wilson Staff CB - 17
Takomo 301CB - 16
Ping Blueprint S - 15
TaylorMade P7CB - 14
Titleist T100 - 12
Ignoring price as well - Here are the rankings
Vice VGi01 - 16
Ping Blueprint S & Wilson Staff CB - 13
TaylorMade P7CB - 11
Takomo 301CB - 10
Titleist T100 - 8
I have been playing the Wilson Staff Blades for some time and I agree with the feel of Wilson products, just no comparison to my old Callaway and Titleist clubs I used to play...
Put the Vice irons in the bag
A real shame that you didn't include the Srixon zx 7 mk2 irons in this they would have won hands down the most under rated brand in golf
8:24 - Hey Rick. The Wilson thumbnail is a picture of the Takomo FYI
Having no Mizuno is straight up robbery, lol. The 243’s fly and are butter smooth.
Takomo has a better track record where I would trust them over Vice, both from a performance and value standpoint.
you left out PXG, Mizuno and Srixon to put in Vice and takomo? the disrespect
I definitely think Takomo have earned the right to be in this list
@@lucasgrant-maw5619 you are right sir.
Nice to see some dtc clubs getting some love❤
Does the new Wilson staff model feel better than the previous iterations in your opinion? Same?
LOL can't take this one seriously
Nothing should be taken very seriously if you ask me
I have a set of 301cb/301mb being built right now. Being left handed I wish Vice would make the 01’s in LH. The Vice putters look great too.
You need to do a direct to consumer test, Caley-Vice-Takomo-kirkland
the wilson staff irons look.and feel.fantastic. only thing that puts me off is the shiny chrome finish on the irons?
As always, love your content. Suggestion, would love to see maybe two additions. 1) partner up with a average everyday mid to high handicap golfer to see how they can hit the clubs so we can see how it relates to most of us. 2) when performance testing, find a way to do blind comparisons. Maybe have someone sport wrap the grips, and tape the back side. That's way you have no idea who made what.
Mizuno 243
DTC irons are starting to make a big name for themselves!
So just to put this all in context... the #1 iron played on Tour (the best low handicappers) is last place for Rick...
And Rick does it for the views. Should we question that as well?
@@kyshapka I don't understand what you are getting at.
I'm a club fitter and I agree with him.
Man, whatever. I don't agree with him at all. And no way Vice is better than the T100, which I also don't play. Doesn't take a club fitter to know this. But go on with what you think is best. Not trying to argue.
Can you please do a review on foreward irons. Big hype on them down here.
Looks did receive a lesser weighting.
I feel like instead of distance it should be distance consistency. For low handicappers they need consistent distance. They don’t want a club prone to huge variation in distance
Didn’t Rick play the t100 last year and is now playing the tm p7cb. Last and 4th place 🤷♂️
Are all the irons the same shaft? otherwise i feel that the accuracy test seems off.
And feel surely
The same shaft for all clubs would surely not be right. It may marry to some but hinder the performance of others.
Think you missed out with not having Mizuno 243's in this category. Don't think you have ever reviewed them? Fantastic Irons!
Can we get dispersion for tie breakers?
What do you think about the ping iBlades Rick?
Only thing I disagree with is points for distance. In this category players are not normally concerned with distance as much as spin and consistency.
8:28 the profile picture is Takomo 301CBs for the Wilson Staff Model. Might want to fix that....
I guess because it was a 2023 iron you wouldn’t include Srixon, but the ZX7 MK2s are the best irons on the market. Hands down.
No mizuno 243s is a miss in my opinion but great video Rick!
@@BenjaminKnipe agreed.
Yo slick rick, were the srixons at? Thanks for the vid though 👍
tough to do a winner in this section without Mizuno given that they feel great same for Srixon
Thing is as well in future the Ping will still hold a decent resale value but cost most so bit of a trade off
If you assigned half points for looks, I think you should have assigned double points for price.
Can someone tell me what the barrel cut out on the Ping irons hozzel is for.? What is its function.?
Fitting adjustments
I have to say I disagree on looks (but then if you ask 6 people you'll likely get 6 different answers). I can't see how accuracy is a valid test as it depends on your performance. I also wouldn't buy irons with regard to the length of their carry, I'd be rather looking at gap fitting. However, I do love watching your videos as they are both entertaining and instructive so keep up the good work.
I'm amazed the kirklands are in this
you need to do yard per degree of loft otherwise data is skewed to the heavier lofted clubs
No Callaway Apex CB?
Why do you never do PXG the 0317 irons are amazing
I wish you would do reviews on the sub 70 brand, especially the tc model compared to these
So you left out 3 of the best iron makers in mizuno, srixon and callaway and put in more obscure makes like vice and takomo, very poor reviewer
The Vice are just cheap enough and lofted just strong enough to win this.
😂
I mizuno pro 243 is insanse
What about mid-low handicap irons like p770's or i230s
The Vice over the Callaway Ti Fushion ?
