as a canon DSLR APS C shooter, you don't know how much I would want something equivalent to these lenses 😭
it's a shame Canon didn't (and still isn't) create any really good quality glass for APS-C

I have this Meike lens as well as the 35mm f1.4 and though I haven't used the 50mm much I LOVE the 35mm. it takes amazing sunset/rise pictures and it was less than a hundred dollars. very impressed with Meike lenses

Hi Arthur, this is really interesting, because it looks almost exact the same to me as the 7artisans 50 0.95. Even optical construction seems to be identical. Maybe it has better coatings or you just got a good copy. Have you any idea? Thanks.

its looks and specs are suspiciously similar to the 7artisans 50/0.95; however, it seems to perform much better wide open. with regard to the sigma 56, it would be interesting to see it added to the comparison with the meike and ttartisan both shot at 1.4

@@cinelensgeeky3648 Agree. He took better photos this time.
However, these two lenses are almost exactly the same - no difference other than the focus ring (this one has diamond shaped knurling). Even the weight is exactly the same as the 7artisans variant! Also both have the same (strange) bell shaped bokeh in some photos.

I picked up this lens and the 7 artisans 35mm F1.4 about 6 months ago. I really thought I’d like the 7 artisans more but the Meike got so much character I love it and usually pickup the Meike before the 7 artisans. The 7 artisans is much sharper wide open but, with my 50mm stopped down to around 1.2-1.4 it becomes just as sharp with less CA.
If you’re not sure, just get it, for the price tag it’s worth it if you want a less clinically sharp look.

Thanks for this review. It's always good to see other options out there. In some respects, the quirks of the Meike lens is often sought out by filmmakers. Like when they use vintage lenses for their optical characteristics.

I compared a Meike 50mm F/2 to a Rokinon 50mm F/1.2. I found that overall, the Meike is pretty much just as sharp. It's also smaller, but I've liked the fact that the aperture and focusing is manual, which means that they can be adjusted even with manual extension tubes for macro, but also if reversing the lens. The Rokinon, despite also being fully manual, is actually not manual to the same extent!
Despite being used before, with some scratches, it's possible I might've ended up with one of the better copies. That being said though it might not be consistent quality across many copies due to the manufacturing/quality control process, although one might hope that it not be true.

The old concept that you had to spend $4000 to get a superb lens changed about 4 years ago with the advent of CDC lens grinding and polishing machines with a one micron tolerance became available to lens makers. The same equipment that makes Lumix lenses is also used by Zeiss and Leica. Meike also use them. What took Leica a week to hand finish a lens can be done in an hour and the results are the same. Leica do have some secret sauce in the coatings though.

Very similar. The focus ring is better on this Meike.

    • @avavaviv1
      @avavaviv1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ArthurR I've never had a problem with that, it's the optical fomula that interests me. The performance between 0.95 and 1.2-4 is so poor and the effect on exposure so insignificant, it poses the question whether it wouldn't be better to just cap it at 1.3 which is probably superior to the other Chinese 1.2-1.4 fixed manual lenses and not give false hope of 0.95. It sounds ridiculous that removing options would be pro-consumer but in this instance it might be.

Thanks for the review! It would have been interesting to have this lens offered in Leica LTM mount, since there is an adapter that allows "autofocus" with LTM glass on Sony bodies. With AF and eye detection, I would happily shell out even 400 USD for this lens.

I think it's better to have somewhat a negative review than no review at all. A lot of the channels here on YT are somewhat biased anyways. Even if they were not, in real world application most modern lenses can produce great images even when printing relatively big. I mean, I see a lot of reviews where people don't recommend a lens and at the same time they show very good pictures shot with that particular lens.

Interesting review Arthur. Especially your notes on the 56/50 for shooting. I have the Sigma 30 (the older 2.8) and also the full manual Neweer 35mm f1.7 and yeah.. that Neweer although its only a $100 it is a very good lens "if" you can nail the focus and compared to my older Sigma.. I actually think my Neweer is a lot superior in image quality once nailed.. Against the F1.4 sigma... yeah.. you can see the vast difference in quality that the Sigma offers. SO yeah.. nice review, on point and essentially.. if you want an easy life.. go 56mm or the sony 50.. if you want a challenge and some fun.. go manual.

All compare these new manual lenses always compare with much more expensive lenses, yes interesting see what "not get" for the price. But "we" who want to buy a lens in 100-300 dollars price range probably thinking about buy old manual vintage lens or a new manual lense. Can someone please make a comparison between old vintage manual lenses like 50mm f1.2-1.4 Pentax, Minolta, Canon or Nikon manual lense to new manual lenses.

I have the sigma 1.4 56mm and 16mm, but most of the time I end up using the Tamron 17-70 2.8, results are incredible for a zoom lens, it's super versatile and although bulky, it beats carrying multiple lenses and having to swap.

De-clicked aperture? Please tell Meike that lenses are for photography (I can spell it slowly if they are unused to the subject) and a de-clicked aperture ring is totally dead for most photographers, maybe videographers might want to pick it up, but the use of yet another 50mm when there are great lenses with AF is slight at best.

Please try to get it right. Take the time, do a wee bit of research, and understand where the term "Bokeh" comes from. It is not pronounced like a bouquet of flowers like you constantly misspeak. The term originated in Japan to reference the out of focus image aspects of a lens. It is pronounced "BOK-eh" not bouquet. In your very earliest videos you had the pronunciation correct but for some odd reason you changed. IT IS NOT BOUQUET!
