Cleaning Hard Water Deposits

  • How to remove hard water deposits off of faucets and sinks. No need for special cleaners or chemicals, just plain vinegar is used on this. The acid in the vinegar easily dissolves the calcium and hard water deposits and makes it easy to remove.
And before anyone gets on my case about replacing gaskets and seals in the faucet, we don't have access to shut off the water to do it ourselves.

You just need to get replacement parts from your local home improvement store and fix the sink. It doesn't cost much and instructions come with the parts. Itd not hard to do. I've done it many times

As has been stated numerous times in the comments already, fixing the sink was not as easy as just replacing a washer or o-ring. The turn-off valves were rusted in place meaning the water could NOT be turned off. When they finally fixed it it flooded the 2 apartments beneath causing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage. So while technically is SHOULD have been easy, it was not. Besides, we moved out of that apartment over 3 years ago. It's someone else's problem now.

Danm!! If the apartment complex dosen't want to replace the water fixture, at least they should fix the leak, it's super easy to do it, it takes 1minutes and less than $15 to get it done.. I work on an apartment complex for the disabled, section 8, and its usually the same deal, and when I fix the leak I clean all that calcium around and my residents are happy!! Lazy management

I live in a apartment complex and I'm having issues with my sink and have had them come to fix my issues in my sink and bathroom but they wouldn't fix it because everytime they showed up it wasn't leaking at those very moments. And when you call them to come it takes them a whole year (sarcasm) to come.

IT WORKED!!! THANK YOU FOR AN AWESOME AND HELPFUL VIDEO!!! My sink works fine, but over time, it had come to look terrible. To be honest, because my sink looked way worse than yours, I didn't expect much of a result, but it worked AND it was SO EASY!!! I used a non-serrated knife to scape off the deposits after the vinegar soak. Funny thing is, it's the same knife I ALWAYS use, only this time, instead of looking 'somewhat better,' it looks absolutely fabulous, shiney, and OH-SO-CLEAN. Plus, for the first time I was able to really get that tight little space behind the faucet! ❤️

I use a vinegar, Dawn dish soap mixture. About a 1/4 c. Dawn and fill the rest with vinegar in a spray bottle. If you can clean it every week, it really keeps the buildup at a min. CLR works the best at really bad hard water stains and you don't have to scrub. Good job on it. It looks fabulous! As far as the leaky faucet, the screw in the handle may just need to be tightened.

First off, I'm not about to buy laundry powder just to deal with this. Where I live, a box of Tide is $12. No thanks. Second, this stuff won't even come off with steel wool, let alone just a kitchen sponge. Vinegar is an acid that dissolves the shit. A gallon jug of it is less than $2 which I also use in my laundry as a fabric softener, to clean my stainless pots and pans, to clean windows, to clean spots on the carpet, etc.

We just bought a home in south Texas. It had been abandoned for 10 years. The stainless steel triple sink was almost pure white with calcium build up. I tried the baking soda & vinegar. It removed just about 10 percent of surface scale. I did it a second try last night. Still barely made a dent. I tried Lime Away this morning. That worked. Now alittle baby oil for shine.

Land Lords never want to fix the problem until it's to late and flooding! I'm sorry you went through that but thank you for showing us how you cleaned off the hard water. I'm about to try this in my tub where the faucet has been leaking and constantly splashing causing build up. I own my house so I don't have a landlord but I did have a plumber who replaced a part that never worked so now I'm back to square one. Need to clean up the hard water on the tub then get someone else in here to replace the part in the faucet to stop the leaking!!

Late the party here, but another trick to try after the vinegar treatment would be to dip a cotton ball in mineral oil (or baby oil) and rub down the faucet with it. You don't want too much as it will pool and look greasy. Just get enough to give it a light coat and shine it up. The oil acts as a barrier on the metal so that the minerals in the water can't build up on the faucet. I sympathize with the apartment dwellers out there. We have the same leaky issue with the hot water handle in the tub. I've put in 4 maintenance requests over the years and they never fix it properly.

People shouldn't pay to improve their negligent landlord's property. If you have to do it yourself you might consider withholding that cost from your rent. The new property management company for my complex has taken away all our amenities, raised the rent 20%, intruded on our privacy and caused or ignored massive safety issues around the grounds. I'm not fixing anything. We used to deal with it on our own when we had issues but these new people suck. Not a penny

another tip: rather than using an abrasive pad (which can scratch even when old), use wadded-up aluminum foil. It removes pretty much anything from chrome-plated, stainless, and anodized aluminum surfaces without scratching. It can, however, leave black deposits on tile and such but you can remove those with a cloth and some Barkeeper's Friend (tested half a dozen abrasive cleaners and it works hardest--period--and doesn't scratch. It removes scale too).

Loved the video. I'm a property manager, and I'm disturbed by the fact that your landlord won't send a maintenance person to fix the leak on your faucet. That's causing such a potential for other water damage, underneath the sink. Well, good thing you found a way to beautify it again.

Very nice and I like the idea of the vinegar instead of chemical cleaners for this project. The vinegar rinses off quickly whereas chemicals can cling for a while and slowly seep into the water stream and potentially get into your mouth as you brush your teeth (or into your eyes when washing face).

A top tip for firmly gripping the old piece of fabric to the chrome while the vinegar saturates it: Simply tie a shoelace (old) or piece of string quite tightly around the whole thing and it will all pack together nicely as you require.
Tie it in a knot, but not so tightly that you are unable to undo it an hour later. Just with enough force to keep it from coming undone naturally. That's after pouring the extra vinegar drops on the cloth.

I have a quicker solution to those ugly hard water issues. Take an empty spray bottle fill half way with that white vinegar, fill the rest of the way with Dawn dish soap. Nothing else works like it. Spray on, leave sit for 15 minutes or longer, rinse, and rinse till all the soap is off without having to scrub. Spray and leave again if necessary. I do this at least once a week cause my water is really hard. This method works beautifully~

I learned the hard way to wipe the faucet down every time I wash dishes. Not just wipe it down but I normally keep a pot of water boiling while I wash dishes, so at the end of taking care of the dishes, I pour a generous amount onto the faucet, let it sit then wipe it dry. I also pour the boiling water into the sink to rinse it after I scrub it down with a brush. I don't have a stainless steel sink, and it it's old, so it needs extra scrubbing. But the hot water keeps me from having build up. I don't know the science behind how I figured this out or why it works, but it does.

Better to wax it with carnauba wax, yes car wax. Carnauba wax is the most food safe wax there is, indeed pills and candy are coated with it. The cheap car wax isn't carnauba wax, only the expensive stuff.

Baby oil can be toxic for consumption (if it's accidentally transmitted to your food/drinks), but olive oil does just as good job and it's edible 😉

You might also look into trying Barkeepers Friend. It works great for hard water deposits on your faucet (and other metal, including stainless steel sinks). I have really hard water and used it on my 3-year-old faucet and it came out beautifully. It doesn't scratch, either, which is awesome. I've never tried this vinegar method, but am going to for the hard water deposits on the tile surrounding the sink.

Metal polish (for Chrome on cars) works real slick, it is faster than vinegar. I did my bathroom faucet in like 5 min with a paper towel and it looked nasty like yours. I also used Fast Orange to scrub away the soap scum and other grime in the sink... Try it out and see if it works for you. [I used the Turtle Wax Chrome & Metal Polish]
The abrasives in these cleaners break down as you use them and you only need a small amount. Just work it in and polish away the crud with ease. No Scotch-Brite required.

I use a toothbrush for the hard to reach places and then baking soda to make it shiny :) The before and after on your sink it's amazing. I've never had deposits that bad and I'm surprised you were able to clean it.

Try De-Glue Goo, a non-toxic gel used for desolving water based glues. Just squeeze some onto the deposites and leave it to work. Use a soft brush like a tooth brush to scrub off the desolved deposites. For light deposites leave it for a few minutes. For heavy deposites leave for half an hour or longer. The time will depend on the dryness of your evironment. If it drys just recoat. For heavy deposites, you may have to clean more than once. It is easier than the towel method.

You just like the vinegar baking soda reactions. Vinegar is an acid, baking soda is a base, together they neutralize each other and produce sodium acetate. But the reaction is satisfying and until they neutralize each other completely, they both still clean.

It can also scratch pretty bad. Baking soda is an abrasive.
