Thanks for this video. A lot of people in my area use channel 16; I can hear them on my scanner, but the Retevis won’t receive them (the “busy” light goes green but no audio comes through). Can anyone tell me which settings to change to allow the radio to transmit & receive these signals, please?
awesome test and demo! Hey a short antenna isn't always indicative of a bad thing! I have a tiny stubby on my baofeng smaller than whats on your walkies in the video and it can get out crystal clear even to repeters and such. If its tuned to the frequencies your working with it will perform great
We have these at my work place, we found they don't have good range throughout most of the 88 acres. I don't know if upping the transmitter power will help with the range or they simply aren't good enough for the size of the site.
PMR446 should be OK for 88 acres but you'll be pushing it if there are any obstructions or sudden changes in gradient. Open land should be fine. Transmission power would help a bit but it kills the battery life and is, of course, not legal :-)
@@tdcattech We finally clicked on what has been causing the problems, in certain areas of the site you can pick up signal no problem as there is probably a few trees/bushes and a couple of fences in the "line of sight" between radios, where as the rest of the neighboring sites have large warehouses (as the site is located in an industrial area) which aren't letting the signal through, so unless we upgrade to more powerful radios under a business license we can't really use them as I'm sure the company would rather not us not break the law for the sake of a few radios. I did find your video on why is walkie talkie range always poor very useful. Thanks for all the info :)
Just go on e.bay and put stubby uhf antannaes should bring them up mine came from china under two pound for 2 make sure you order mini sma male and beware on some when you click on the link it only gives the choice of female sma hope that helps p.s takes about 2 weeks from china with free postage.....
Excellent....antenna coil inside dosent reach fully to top about half a inch of wasted tubing I just cut mine down and put proper rubber stoppers on end antannae has a small hole which when accessed with a mini hex key turning anti clockwise releases small screw which then allows you to screw antenna off to reveal mini s.m.a I'm using a quarter wave Nagoya on a mini magmount now ....p.s just to inform radio gives a audible bleep and I think a light indication when battery life is running low great review look forward to you're test ENJOY.....
The antenna are fixed has nothing to do with the price. It's the regulations, they have to be fixed otherwise you have to have a amateur radio licence ect.
Love the xt420, had it for many years now. Best feature is you can program the channels and sub codes by putting it in program mode on the go no need to hook it to a computer
Range is identical to all PMR446 units. 100-200m in a built up environment or building. 1-2km rural and 10km+ line of sight. In my testing, there are no outliers with fixed antenna walkie-talkies like this. They all perform very similarly.
I can't answer that question for you. Maybe, if you have a load of USB chargers around (maybe from old phones or other devices) go with that version because then you have less stuff to carry around and you can use the chargers for other tech too.
I know this is an old video but with the USB does that mean you could charge from the car? Also didn’t understand re the point of reprogramming the channels. Are they not general channels that all 16 channel PMR’s have? Thanks in advance.
Very well done and very well explained thanks for sharing that my mate runs a motorbike 🏍 training school hes got boafeng walkie talkies so you can give the rider directions 😉
It's not really going to make a difference unless you can fit a true external directional antenna with a a gain but then you wouldn't have a portable device.
Hey Guys, i am after bang for buck walkie talkie here in australia for work. i work in open/ some tree lines and shrubs over 100 acres. walkie talkies rated up to 3km dont seem to work. is there a walkie talkie you could recommend for range and clarity with ear piece and maybe lithium batteries or re chargeable which last up to 10 hours+. any advice or suggestions will be appreciated. thanks
Unfortunately your best bet is a 5 watt GME or icom you can buy one of the Chinese radios but would recommend making sure it can be programmed for 477 mhz at least it will not be on a random freq the might interfere with police fire ect
The antenna is longer on the Retevis because it has 16 channels, where the Moto has 8. It has to accommodate the extra frequencies. Using the pc software, I just switch all the CTCSS & DCS tones off, that way I can hear anyone transmitting nearby. The transmit power can also be turned up to 2 watts too.
Length of the antenna doesn't have anything to do with the number of channels. Length of the antenna depends on the wavelength of the radio wave, difference between the wavelengths of this frequencies is to small too make much difference on the antenna length. Also since those extra channels are higher in frequency it means that their wavelength is smaller so you need smaller antenna.
@@mikesey1 Higher the frequencie the shorter the antenna 446 is in the 70 cems part of the uhf band so yes lenght of the antenna depends on the frequency
TDCatTech no I was on c b in the early 70S and 80s but nothing since then just. Scanning ; but was thinking of getting a pmr radio that was why I asked you could you open the squelch
Ah, the CB 27/81. PMR is all about the practical. It's a tool for business and leisure and rarely dips into the social. Though CH08 can get some social traffic occasionally (calling channel UK).
Just got a pair for work, have used them before but wanted my own. They are a good price and a good bit of kit.
I've just ordered a set for work, need something with a decent speaker 🔊 can these be programmed with other UHF frequencies. Great video

The new silvercrest radios from lidls are cracking little sets the best out of the lidl line I've purchased and 16ch.
I actually have a pair of these myself boss, and if the battery runs low, it would then send out a voice activation to tell you to charge your battery
I have the same but Floureon A5 MODEL . Working ok

It actually tells you when to charge the battery ( in an American accent)

Was that a clip of C.M. at the end ?
Good mornig.
What's the range? Did you tested?
Thank you

I’m getting these for my birthday, I hope they work Fine 😀
you can remove the antenna there's a little screw by the base of antenna little Alan key

Which one should I get? The kit with the USB charger?? or the otherone with the net electricity.
Sorry my english

I am totally blind, and looking for a radio, that will speak, all of its prompts screens are of no use to me. Any suggestions
Retevis RT27, there's FRS, MURS or PMR446 varieties available. It has no screen but it announces the channel changes.
Why would you make this video acting like you were going to do a review and then not do it!!!! 10 min of life I'll never get back!
I guess it's in the title. Sorry for wasting your time 🙂
I am trying to pair these with my current motorola devices which are set on channel 8 - and struggling - any ideas please?
I see you can take the aerial off if i fit a better aerial would the range be better and clear . Thanks

When would that video be coming out because I am getting a pair of them for christmas
Are these radios bigger than the baofeng 888s radios
Yes. Slightly bigger and nicer in almost every way.
12:31 We dont know if the antennalength is only the rubber outside, or the wire inside too
Der Draht ist nur ein 7cm langer Wendel
The reason for the surprise fixed antenna, that is the PMR446 spec, fixed antenna and 0.5 watt. Simple really.
@ t=421 There is no sound. Do you know what was going on?
Is there any particular channel with the most activity
Good video today
Can you open the squelch on rt 24
I don’t think so. I haven’t tested a squelch level of 0 but I don’t believe it’s possible. Someone might want to prove otherwise 🙂
how your check battery level

Length of the antenna depends on the wavelength of the radio wave, difference between the wavelengths of this frequencies is to small too make much difference on the antenna length.
Also since those extra channels are higher in frequency it means that their wavelength is smaller so you need smaller antenna.
This statement is anything but true.

The maximum range in an urban area is 160 meters. Big shit!

Or a calling channel on pmr 446 like say channel 19 on citizen band
Channel 8 is the calling channel on PMR 446. Surprised that you never got a reply in a year!

No. I've never gone down that route however, I feel it could be useful these days to do some decent tests on 70cm. What about you?
