Yanovsky's replacement was Jerry Yester, formerly of the Modern Folk Quartet. Around this time, perhaps coincidentally, the band's sound became more pop-oriented.
Digital Pie now that you mention it, they do. John Sebastian looks like he's having a good old time. Hell, they all do. I'm loaded myself watching this. The more things change the more the remain the same.
90% of TV performances in those days were lip synched. It hard to get a good sound to reproduce due to lack of technology ie; the equipment was lousy. Ed Sullivan was one of the only that I remember as having the bands perform live. The Spoonful did several live performances on his show. Keaton and Chiro, you guys need to take your meds.
Everyone on stage is high. Beneath all his hippie frou frou, the drummer's tie bears notice of a vestige to his pre psychedelic self. Fascinating time capsule. Ed Sullivan show?
@@ubeBrettu No it wasn't. It was why he was fired. The fact that he didn't want to be in a pop band didn't help. Too bad the Spoonful did do a blues album next as that was the next big thing (Canned Heat, Fleetwood Mac). They certainly had the chops to give all them limey bluz bands a run for their money.
I love this and everything on the "Everything's Playing" album. By the way, what's that contraption Sebastian is using-the thing that appears to be hammering the autoharp? I love that sound, whatever it is.
Guys listen too steve boone and zal himself, he was fired. Maybe he was in a drug bust, but thats not why he left, he hated JS writing , darling be home soon, still a mystery to me. He said himself he was going to bring this band down. He wanted to live the truth as he said, wanted to get back to small clubs, they wanted to keep going ....hey who wouldnt. That drug story has been around since i was a kid in the mid 70s. Type in in zals name , if he was deported , how come he played with chris Krissofferson he fired him too...
But Zally played live at the Isle of Wight with John when Kristofferson had him in his band. Zally was harassing another band member in Kris' band. That is why he got fired again.
"On October 7, 2017, Yester was arrested for 30 counts of possession of child pornography in Arkansas and was released on a $35,000 bond. As a result of his arrest he was dismissed from The Lovin' Spoonful." What a t*at, lol! They shouldn't of canned Zal in '67 and should of gone more rock like he wanted! John could of done these great soft songs via a solo career under his name in my opinion.... Zal was a legend to who is underrated, and like John, made Lovin Spoonful who they were.
@ChiroQuacker The band wouldn't have cords from there instruments if they were lip synching. But most tv shows in the 60's let the bands play live. Some shows like american bandstand did not let the bands play live.
ChiroQuacker; Is that Lithuanian or maybe Rawandan for "homophobe"? I know who you are and I know where you live. You'll figure it out one of these days.
@ChiroQuacker I am not a f......g stooge you don't know what the hell you are talking about. I grew up back then. When the band just stood up there like in the movies in the 60's they had no cords going to the equipment. I know what I am talking about.
@@robertnesfield6321 Nonsense, he was a great guitarist (Creque Alley). They should have done a blues album next to hop that trend. Everything's Playing is a great album. Their "White Album".
@@Mossedepths Yes, he was the brains of the operation. Not to say that the others didn't have important contributions, but it was like Lennon-McCartney leaving the Beatles at that point.
This song is just amazing! It has a delightful 67 psychedelic flavour.
Love that wee gadget sitting on keyboard. So that were the tinkly sound came from. Great Spoonful song.
It's called a Marxophone. Someone gave it to John thinking it was an autoharp.
@@RayNDeere It is an autoharp, but with mallets to strike the strings instead of strumming it the way John usually did.
Que BANDA linda, amo sempre. Gente que toca meu coração, obrigado por existirem
Excellent "live" version! I still have this on a 45. Great song!
Não aguentei esperar a estreia no canal do Ed Sullivan e vim aqui. Ótima canção, uma vibe meio Pet Sounds. 💕
This was the Spoons third and final appearance on Ed Sullivan. Jerry Yester also played piano on "Do You Believe In Magic".
Great band.
It’s love
It’s beautiful
Man, these guys are baked!
I,ve said this before, This is up there with Good Vibrations!
Great song!
Lovin' Spoonful rules!
xoxo
The Clarences
I was in sixth grade...
They look completely baked
Digital Pie now that you mention it, they do. John Sebastian looks like he's having a good old time. Hell, they all do. I'm loaded myself watching this. The more things change the more the remain the same.
Why not? They had to lip synch except for the lead vocal That probably bored them so much by that time.
Yep. Off their faces. Pot I'd reckon.
I remember this song from the oldies station.
Rider: How much weed do you want?
Band: Yes
john is so cute:(
My fave Spoonful song!
wow! it's just a song, and imo a good one at that, but reading the comments makes me wonder why people do what they do.....
Que guapo.
The 'contraption' is a Marxophone; also used by The Doors on "Alabama Song" and The Kinks "Death of a Clown".
Thanks for letting us know she was a girl.
Stoned again, man!

Yep. Their last appearance. Not sure if they did a second song (if they did, likely "Money"or "Six o' Clock" since they also hit the top 40)
They also played "Only pretty what a pity" also posted on YT.
@@goldtown6747 The last song they would ever play on Ed Sullivan. I mentioned the hair dryer to John once and he had no memory of it.
@ChiroQuacker He was singing live.
I don't see the original lead guitarist, Zal Yanovsky, in this video. Does anyone know why he did not appear?
Ssdly, Zally was involved in a drug bust and since he was a Canadian citizen, he had to leave the US and not return.
Zally was fired!!!Didnt like the direction JS was going. The drug story was bullshit.

Looks like someone had an extra Spoonful of something!
Jerry Yester is Jim Yester's brother, I assume. Jim was and still is with the Association.

Yes, and Jim was in the reformed Spoonful in the 90s for a bit. I think Jerry did some time with the Association after their hits faded.
You can almost feel the lysergic kick in...
I am sure John smoked a few bong filled bowls. Lol look at his eyes.
No Zal? I assume this performance was after his arrest/blackballing?
It's documented they "canned" him from the band in '67 at a meeting in John's house.
@ChiroQuacker The band wouldn't have cords from there instruments if they were lip synching. But most tv shows in the 60's let the bands play live. Some shows like american bandstand did not let the bands play live.
Ed Sullivan was weird. Sometimes it was lipsyncing and often it was partially live over a taped performance.
COVERED IN BRAZIL IN PORTUGUESE BY RENATO E SEUS BLUE CAPS AS "ELA É UM MISTÉRIO PARA MIM".
Does Gene Vincent know somebody stole his band ?
Marxaphone and 2 electric keyboards, the lovin spoonful a 2 keyboard band with 4 guys, before stereolab...
And a hair dryer on "Only Pretty" which was their last tune ever on Ed Sullivan.
Very Beach Boys Pet Sounds ish...
Brian Wilson credited Butchie's Tune with inspiring one of the Pet Sounds tunes.

crosseyed gonzo
The band fell apart when he Zal left.
John stayed with the group for the Everything Playing LP after Zal left. The remaining three (Joe, Steve, Jerry) did one more album before breaking up
ilovmusic105 I think it was after John left that it fell apart. 😔
Zal was no loss.
