My daughter lives in Ketchikan, we fly there several times a year. They have a fund raiser in town there that the residents buy rubber ducks from businesses and then have a rubber duck race in the creek. So funny to be on Creek street watching all the yellow ducks going by.
We’ve seen bears in Ketchikan!!
It’s a great community and we love visiting. We feel like part time residents.
I was able to find a few stores that were locally owned and sold items made in Alaska (had the little bear seal) and by local artists. Expensive but wanted to support the local economy.
The lumberjack show is amazing. The Alaskan cruise was one of the best we ever took!
So the shops being owned by the cruise lines may have been a good thing. Although the employees hours were cut or they were laid off, the store didn’t go under. So the residents had jobs to go back to.
The dead salmon, sadly, actually DID make it. They die after spawning.
Most forget that.
@@CR-ru1kw i never knew it! Wow
Yup, Pacific salmon spawn once and die, Atlantic ones I believe go back to the ocean.
Some of my best cruise excursions have been in Alaska. The lumberjack show was great fun. Landing on a glacier via helicopter and going dog sledding was a life memory. Repelling down an Alaskan mountain was thrilling. All wonderful experiences.
Next June we are doing the glacier/dog sled in Juneau & in Ketchikan, chartered a boat to go after king salmon 🍣
I know Sue Coccia, she makes great art. A lot of it is sold in museums but it makes sense to find it in Alaska. We have dozens of puzzles that were made from her art!
Ketchikan by far was my favorite port in Alaska. Best food of any port and saw lots of bears and Eagles
We did the land and sea on Princess when we went to Alaska. On the bus tour you got to see the desert in Alaska which was unbelivable and the Emerald Lake (breataking). We saw so much more than the train ride.
THE HIDE AND NO SEEK CHAMPION OF THE WORLD! SQATCH
Hey Tony…maybe no bears this time but you had some of the best whale sightings so just call it even…😜
When did Tony see the Whales?😳 My husband was so hoping to see whales on our Alaskan cruise. We only saw a bit of a tail, and water spouting. 🥺
@@VLCortes24 look back to his Juneau vlog…awesome and more sightings than normal 👋
@@VLCortes24 That’s how the majority of whale watching tours are.
@@ms.m9337 I just finished watching the Juneau video, WOW! That was amazing!!! 😲🥰
@@ilovesparky13 That’s what we were told too. Maybe next time we will get as lucky as Tony. 😊
LOVE your Alaska vlogs! I was surprised to see that several of the tourist shops look just like the ones in Cherokee NC used to look. Not the buildings but the items inside. The totem poles, the bear items, the benches for sale outside, etc. Neat stuff really but I was surprised that it was so familiar. Terrific video. Thanks Tony!
My husband saw the seal when we walked around Creek Street that day. I tried to video it, but it didn't resurface again where we could see it. I'm glad that you caught it on video. I was beginning to think he was seeing things! 😉
Yay, you got the bear magnet, same one I bought 2 years ago and I love it! I kept thinking as you were looking “get the bear, get the bear”! Lol
Thanks for the tour! Alaska was our first cruise ever. That set the hook for cruising for us! ❤️
One year in Alaska our cruise ship was docked side by side with another ship. I can't remember the port but it was when 3 or 4 cruise ships would be in town on the same day. Anyways there were half a dozen seals cooperating to heard big schools of salmon between the 2 ships and the end of the pier. the salmon would run out of escape routes and became easy pickings for the seals. It stuck me how intelligent & strategic that was for the seal species to use man made objects to block the fishes escape routes to get a meal!
The seals jump on back of private boats to escape whales.
Lovely post! Thx Tony!
Tony my wife and I were at Ketchikan one week before you we were on Carnival Miracle. Saw the same sea lions in the water. And went in the same store you got your magnet. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for all the Cruise news.
Thank you for this video and the great memories
Fantastic video, fun to watch
Hi Tony!
Ketchikan is a beautiful town.
Thank you for taking us along!
Look a lovley place to visit. Great footage. Love seeing the salmon + seal
We wandered off the main drag and found ourselves in an incredible Jewelry store, locally owned and opened 12 months a year. We told Julie our story of our totally unique wedding in Juneau. Jim bought a gorgeous Gold & Quartz earrings for me (my wedding gift) made by a craftsman locally.
Anyway …..
It was 8 years until our next Alaska adventure. In Ketchikan we scooted to our Jeweler. The owner, Julie, RECOGNIZED us …. She had remembered our unique wedding.
Snoop around. There are marvelous treasures just waiting to be discovered.
Nice Steven Wright reference. 👍
We did a tour of Dolly’s in 2011. Interesting slice of history. Pink salmon only spawn every “odd” year. My hubby is hoping to catch some this week.
Creek street was one of my favorite things to see on our Alaskan cruise a few years ago. Dolly’s house was also very fun to do and see. My daughters (19 and 15 at the time) and I talked about it for months before we went and still talk about it to this day (5 years later)
We cruised to Ketchikan in August 1993 with the real Holland America on the original Statendam. Virtually NO excursions in those days. But what I loved was Sitka which is NOT a stop these days.
Love to see you guys exploring the town. please keep capturing this kind of relaxing video to us, saying hi to don as well !!
Nice video, great info. Thanks and take care.
Great video!!!
The lumberjack show is so much fun!
Beautiful Scenery
If I paid close to $300 for a bear excursion that turned out to be a basic boat ride, I'd be mad too. Next time you are there, do the Deadliest Catch excursion. It was really great.
Came back 3 weeks ago was there for 2 months.
Good Job Tony. We were there in 2014. It rained too.
The visitors center was very cool in Ketchikan.
I enjoyed. I hit the like button. See you on the Lido
Thanks for sharing ,it bought back great memories of our trips to Alaska ,it was great to see all the different places we went to as well , loved it so much we flew from Australia 4 times
I was there on the last NCL cruise of 2019 and Creek St was awash with dead Salmon, and then the Gulls and Seals everywhere having a great feast. That was quite the sight.
I was there 3 years ago on Holland. Creek Street was my favorite. Sunny 70° day. We walked all over.. First time I saw a raven up close.
Loved the Lumberjack show in Ketchikan!
You can just show up at the lumberjack show and present your ship pass for a discount. You didn't go up the venticular car to top of hill that is at Creek Street.
It is hit or miss, if your lucky or not on the Bear excursions. We almost missed out but the guide got a radio when we went on tour and we backtracked and we’re able to see 2 bears, one with 2 cubs!! It was amazing, and we almost missed it too
A totem would have been another good magnet choice
Crosby Stills Nash and Young very cool in the Fish Creek Shop!
ketchikan is one of my favorite places on earth. if you would have walked up creek street a bit further and crossed the street by the next bridge, you would have seen the salmon ladder (or maybe you DID see it). we walked a bit further up creek and saw salmon spawning and continuing to swim upstream. i get it about being sad. i felt incredibly sad as well. we were also fortunate to see salmon in skagway swimming up the little creek. i bought some great necklaces...one on each trip...made by local artisans so yes, there ARE some local shops. interestingly, one of the artists i purchased from happens to winter down here in venice...my home town. lol. thanks for the great video and for bringing back wonderful memories of two trips spent there.
You need to see more in the world if depressing Ketchikan is your favorite place on earth. LOL. Yuk.
@@chicagomike lol. to each their own, but i am very well-travelled, mike. i did not find it depressing at all. maybe because we hiked around up to the totem pole museum and actually talked to locals on the way up and back. another favorite is iceland. guess this florida girl likes colder places. ps i find chicago extremely depressing...bwahaha
We were at Creek Street in September 2019. It was a warm day and there were several hundred salmon which had spawned and died. The smell in the whole area was "ripe". I had to put a handkerchief over my nose to keep from gaging.
Definitely, the bear 🐻 magnet was a great choice....because....Jenny and you can see it on the fridge every day, and plan on seeing one together when you go back to Alaska together ❤!!
Tony, also living in the Tampa Bay area, when I saw the dead fish , I thought for a moment of red tide....😬....then I remembered that after they spawn, they die...😕.
We attended the lumberjack show back in 2019. It was very entertaining!
So funny to see all the vehicles. Had to come in by boat, I guess, because the road ends either way out of the city and the airport is across the channel. Hard to wrap my mind around. Certainly a unique city. Thanks for sharing.
I just got back from Alaska cruise. Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway
I wonder if there are still Walmart vans driving around. Usually the crew will take them to resupply. There were also a few pot shops loaded with cruise passengers when I was there in 2018. Lol!
We were gonna book alaska but a bit pricey for a family of four so we just booked carnival elation to grand turks and amber cove. Let the countdown begin. 266 days to go. Alaska is on the bucket list for sure. Looks interesting. Thanks for the video tour and update!!
Book it when you are able - worth every penny!! You won’t be disappointed.
Great video ! Thank you 🦅🐻🐾
Enjoy that cold wet weather! Not my kind of vacation but to each his own.
Don’t feel bad. Most of the time I only get magnets from where I’ve been-I have magnet boards from all of my travels. Cheap and they will last forever!
We got Sitka as our third port on RC, and we went to see the brown and black bears at the Fortress of the Bear. Very cool place, my youngest loves bears and she was very happy to be within 30 feet of the bears in there own habitat.
Guys you need to go on a cruise together more often. I really like your passion.
I was there last week and it was a ghost town. The Salmon dead in the river and the smell was horrible. Popcorn was awesome!
Went to Alaska end of July a couple of years ago. Weather was perfect! Sunny mostly with temps in the upper 70s during the day. I personally think Sept. is too late, unless you like the cold, rainy , overcast weather.
Was there last week on the NCL
We went the week after you and it poured. Hopefully next time we will get to explore the town more.
I’m sure the tour guide operators’ thank you for booking an excursion over just walking around the port. Must have been tough not having many visitors over the last couple of years.
We were there in September and saw a lot of dead fish too.
The Wife caught 2 Samon and had they sent home ....
Very $$$$$ Samon but She did catch them....And with
Pouch Eggs and Hollandas .......Hey it made Her Happy!!!
We did a bear tour in a different portin Alaska and didn't see any either.
Thank you for all the wonderful videos! Now that I have seen it all through your eyes, we don’t have to go. I really don’t enjoy vacations all bundled up. Could you find out through Don if the spring is better than the fall.??
The start of the season tends to be drier.
Have cruised Alaska 5 times! Love, LOVE any and all parts of it!
Bummer that I have NEVER seen Denali!
As a souvenir I loved the mosquito traps and the Northern Lights screen saver program!
Why are so many people saying that the Rapid Antigien tests are not accurate . I am having that test done at my doctor before I go on my cruise .Iam fully vaccinated and have the cruise insurance if it comes back positive who cares right? I will just reschedule the darn thing! So sick of this pandemic and I watch your channel all the time ! God bless yo
Just left there yesterday, on MP heading home now.
The airport is on the island across the water
Yep. I once worked for USGS, on a stream mapping project in September and October in northern Michigan. There were smelly dead salmon all over, and some very slow moving, hook nosed males lingering all up and down the stream. Kinda cool, kinda gross (did I mention smelly?) Normal for the fall, it would seem.
Those shops were much more crowded when we were there.
I was there in 2005 and the port had 4 cruise ships in which made it very crowded and shoulder to shoulder in every shop. Maybe they should consider limiting the number of ships on any one day.
looks like such a cool place to visit!! Maybe I will get there one day
Looks such a nice place and not far from the ship. My kind of port stop 😂
Thanks for the video. I don't know if I would want to spend all that money to go on a cruise to spend most of the time window shopping when I get there. Most of the towns all look the same.
There are plenty of excursions that take you out of town and away from the touristy shopping areas. You will be able to see beautiful untouched nature.
Don’t feel bad about not seeing bear. I really wanted to . On our tour guide trip we saw tons of bear poop. I’m not kidding you. Walked 10 miles in 3 different spots. Very disappointing . We also missed the totem show which I heard was very good and we missed the shopping there too. So I’m glad you showed us around town. Maybe next Alaskan cruise I’ll be able to see more. I went 3 weeks before you. Thanks for another great video.
We did the Princess land/cruise tour in 2010 and loved the whole experience... however, the ports were so so.....same old thing....yes, owned by the cruise ships...too much of the same thing at each port...jewerly, jewerly....etc. etc....(the best excursion we did was the sea plane in the fjords...Ketchikan.....) When you go to Europe, whole different experience....
Ketch me if you Kan!!
Best excursion in Alaska was in Haines...to a wildlife rescue place....I kissed a Moose named Karen ...lol
Great footage!
We had trouble seeing bear in Sept except in Juneau at the salmon bake
Making me want to go back to Alaska but it was just so cold. Need to have warm clothes next time I go
Just got on board mardi gras. This is a amazing ship! Bolt is assume . After watching your blogs alaska next year.
Shop , I bought beautiful cards there
Magnets by a very well known artist , . Great choice ! You were in a shop not owned by the cruise lines.
I bought the same magnet......so glad I did now!
Tony, you need to pan side to side slower on you hand held videos. Just a friendly suggestion.
The slow panning of the last totem pole was clear and steady. Re: bear excursion, was there a totem pole presentation too? If so, how was it?
Is the weather horrible? Do you regret going so late? Just wondering. Not being rude. It just seems like it’s so cloudy that it might b hard to see much. Good luck 👍 though.
I liked it. The weather didn’t bother me, but I don’t have any reference since it was my first time there. No regrets glad I took the trip.
Fishes can be used if two or more species present. Otherwise the plural of fish is fish.
Lol, or it can be used for effect with poetic license 😜
Salmon die after they spawn. What a life cycle.
First
It's good to know you can't by anything specific in a general store. 😆
Weather is September seems dreary...
We looked for the “made in China” stickers to make sure it was local
How come you don't see any T-shirt shops?
What is the future of cruising to Australia for Americans?
Also the salmon actually die after they spawn. So they made it!! Apparently they try to make it back to where they were spawned.
I would say from the tone of this vid that you were disappointed at the lack of ursas on the tour
The locally operated shops seem to have a very antagonistic relationship with the cruise line shops (I don't think the shops are actually "owned" by the lines, but there is an obviously close relationship). I got told off by the operator of a cruise sponsored shop when she saw I had promotional materials from some non-affiliated stores. The thing is, whichever side of that line the store was on, they both use bait and switch, high pressure sales tactics. I don't need that on my vacation: I'm not looking for expensive jewelry, I just want a few cheap Keychains for The Collection.
Either way -- to shop actual, Alaskan produced items -- get as far from the cruise pier as you can. The shops at Creek Street are a great example for having (mostly) authentic items -- but they are pricier than the Chinese crap in the dock side shops.
When we were in Alaska the locals told us if we wanted to see Bears just go to the dump
