First, even a short cartridge holds more ink than the converter does, so many users just refill cartridges with their favorite ink.. With the converter, be prepared to use some force. These converters can take some strength to put in on first use. This is a good thing because it makes sure the converter stays there, but it sometimes can take some effort. It really depends on the converter because tolerances are a little too tight on some of them. But they will snap into place.
The part I was hoping for was the stage you missed out. After the ink is sucked up how do you put the pen back together. Do you push the knob back in or leave it out ? I get lots of ink all over my hands.

If you push it back down all the ink will come out so you definitely want to leave it up!

A quick wipe with a paper towel usually does it for us but you kind of also just get used to a little ink on the nib in a fountain pen!

No, right above the bottom of the grip section. If you get no ink on the grip section, you won't get a good fill, or any fill.
