    I’m an old guy who’s been taking photos since the mid-90s when I was already in my 20s. I’m also a big music fan. It took a while to dawn on me that square format seemed like such a natural choice because of years interacting with album art.

    Vivian is one of my favorite artists of all time. I take try to learn as much as I can from her, and I just looove her sense of style! Also your eyeshadow looks great!

      @I-SelfLordAndMaster No it looks great. You gotta let people exist, try out styles and different combinations of things. Life is too boring and short to let other people dictate how someone should dress

    It’s not often I comment on TH-cam videos, but this was absolutely phenomenal- I’ve been a subscriber for a little while, but this is by far my favourite video of yours. Keep up the amazing work! 🎉

      thank you so much! was definitely anxious with this one being a different kind of video format, but the support is appreciated :)

    Just a minor thing, on 2:57, found typo of Vivian Maier, misspelled as 'Miaer'.
    Anyway, shame on major digital camera manufacturing companies not making square format sensors..
    Square's fun, and also maxxing out lens' image-circle coverage.
    Maybe they're not quite profittable, being kinda niche market...

      yeahh i noticed my misspell way too late in production, but yeah it’s a shame there isn’t much of a market for square format cameras anymore, would love to see new ones!

    definitely one of my favorite videos - partly because it feels meaningful and honest, and partly because I just agree. 1:1 has to be my favorite aspect ratio for photography because... thats what my phone takes. Since its also what I watched this video on, I got to enjoy this video in 1:1, with no black bars! The focus motor on my phone broke a few months ago and now you have to hit it until it happens to focus where you want but thats okay by me - I'm saving up for a 6x6 film camera at the moment so my squares will live on

      6x6 camera is definitely worth saving up for! you can get some pretty good cheap folding ones too, but a TLR definitely makes the experience more worth it :p glad you liked the video!!

    A really interesting perspective, thank you!
    I can't quite tell if I agree with you yet but I want to know. Cropping after for instagram I always seem to end up losing something important, I think I might set my aspect ratio in (digital) camera to 1:1 for a bit and see how it feels.

    I love the square format too, shooting with my Rolleiflexes is my favourite thing photography wise and I just find that I compose things much more naturally this way. Not everyone likes this format, I think sometimes it's a difficult adjustment to make when you're not used to seeing something in a 1x1 ratio, but I think it's a format that rewards you if you stick with it. I got my first Rollei in 2014 after shooting 35mm pretty much my whole life, the jump to medium format was very striking in terms of the image quality, but it took me quite a while before I became comfortable with placing my subject/scene within in a square. Now it's pretty much the default for me, and I've added an extra two Rolleis to my arsenal over the years.

    • @matt_tube
      @matt_tube  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That rollei collection sounds great! but yeah i know a lot of people don’t like the square format which is a shame, as you said, it just feels so natural to compose with it

    I have a few TLR 6x6 cameras it’s taken me a long while to love the square format but every time I shoot my zeiss ikonta M 6x6 folder I’m blown away with the results I have a few vids featuring the ikonta on my channel. You should grab a square folder so compact and loads of fun to shoot. Vivian’s work is simply gorgeous. Square doesn’t come naturally to me I love all formats but I’m enjoying the square challenge. Great presentation mate new subscriber for you.

    The square 1:1 aspect ratio was my favorite when I was shooting weddings with my Yashica Mat and Mamiya TLR medium format cameras.
    When I replaced my worn-out wedding cameras for Mamiya RB67 medium format SLR cameras, the rectangular 7:6 aspect ratio became my favorite.

    Nice work! Like this approach to the square format. Just bought a Hasselblad 500 C/M (and a Mamiya 645 1000s Gold Lizard) but enjoying moving into the square.
    We all know the Moon landing never took place now (since the Stanley Kubrick admission) but the Hasselblad was indeed used by NASA to shoot earth from space and in the studio where the landings were filmed. I love the comparison of those to family holiday snaps! So right. ❤

    Filming in a square format makes your video more prominent than those filmed horizontally. People can watch your video in full resolution without clicking on it.

  • @sword-and-shield
    @sword-and-shield 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Naw, a vertical or horizontal "choice" gives more options when creating art. Square can work, so its not that it can't, but it can limit as well.

    • @dogarucos
      @dogarucos 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but limitations foster creativity. I understand why you're saying that a vertical or horizontal "choice" gives more options. It is beacause it is much easier to see a photo, you can capture a larger variety of scenes (maybe we find it easier because we are used to see "horizontally"). But more photos does not necessary mean better photos.

    • @sword-and-shield
      @sword-and-shield 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dogarucos ANYTHING can foster creativity, limitations shouldn't be needed, restrictions can only limit. You can limit yourself too two colors of paint, and still create a painting, but those restrictions still limit and pigeon hole how far you "may" go. Doesn't mean you can't create art with a limited approach, hell some many prefer it, or need it. Not me, I want it wide open, nothing preventing nothing.

    There is no "best" format for photography. Just because it suits you doesn't mean it does for others . Grow up a litle.

    • @matt_tube
      @matt_tube  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yes the title is misleading and more of an opinion piece, but theres no need to ‘grow up a little’ while just expressing an personal perspective, i’m aware there isn’t an objective ‘best’ when it comes to anything art related, format is subjective
