  • Winchester to Eastbourne on the South Downs Way: Day 4 - A wild camp above Cocking passing Bignor Villa and climbing Bignor Hill before dropping down to Amberley to meet a friend. A short but hot 6 miles to Washington and then a climb to our wild camp for the night near Chanctonbury Ring.
The South Downs Way is a 100 mile trail that follows the chalk downs of Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex from Winchester in the west to Eastbourne in the east. It travels through farmland, forested woodland, chalk grassland and old towns.
Follow me as I hike this trail over 7 days and try to give you a sense of the history and geography of the lands I will be taking you through.

This section of the South Downs is an area I know very very well. As a child I lived in a village called West Chiltington which is between Pulborough and Storrington. It was only a couple of miles onto the Downs at Chantry Post which is on the South Downs Way between Amberley and Washington. I used to often spend my days roaming alone over this part of the Downs. I have walked in many other parts of Britain including Dorset, the Lakeland Fells and North Yorkshire, and have walked to the top of Snowdon in Wales, but the Sussex Downland has a special place in my heart.
As a tip for anyone who does this walk, from Washington back onto the South Downs Way, you don't have to follow the road all the way. In the video at 13 minutes 33 seconds you can see a parked car with a gate and a footpath marker behind it. If you take that footpath it goes directly up to the South Downs Way. Much nicer walk than along the road. Only proviso is that the field behind the gate can be very muddy if there has been a lot of rain, not least because there are usually horses in the field who churn it up.

I think we all have a special place in our hearts for those places we used to roam as a child so I can totally understand that.
Thanks for the pointer about that footpath; useful for people to know so much appreciate you pointing that out to let others know. I will pin this post to the top as it contains useful information for others

I agree with you about starting and walking towards the pretty, which is why I can never understand why people would start at the source of the Thames and end in London.

I haven't really touched much of the Thames path but agree...think it would be more enjoyable walking towards the source rather than towards London

Thank you. I get a LOT of comments on them and so many questions...if I got a $ for every time I heard someone comment on them while hiking I'd never have to work again. I film on an Sony HX90v...nothing special but it's what I have right now. Seems to do okay.
