Lego Technic 8 speed gearbox using just two levers!? Impossible?

  • Here I present a lego technic 8 speed gearbox that does the seemingly impossible - creating eight speeds using just two levers. Normally two levers are used to create a lego 4 speed lego gearbox - however this design allows for 1 of 8 different speeds to be selected.
Each lever drives a selector that selects from 1 of 2 different speeds. These outputs are combined via lego technic worm gears and a differential to form the overall output.

Very much like an old Detroit diesel truck which has 2 stick shifts- main and auxiliary transmission
Both combined would multiply your total amount of gears

Hey thanks for the comment - I am not familiar with one of those trucks - will look one up on google! 🙂

    Awesome!
Would be cool to see the motion of these two levers combined into one lever that can move forwards and back, and left and right, like a gearstick in a car
Creating a sort of 'Star' shape gear pattern, following the diagram you had made for the positions of all the gears
Gearstick in the middle being neutral, moving it to the left for first, then to the right for second, then to the upper middle for third, upper left for forth, upper right for 5th, lower middle for 6th, lower left for 7th, lower right for 8th
Suprisingly not that hard of a pattern to get your head around
and it'd have fairly safe operation too, since you'd be going to neutral between each gear !

@@TechnicBrickPower I took a 18 year break with lego technic but recently got back into it, still trying to wrap my mind around the new gears, studless liftarms and programming software to talk to the new bluetooth motor hub stuff.
I've found your channel through the how to mesh any two gears on a grid video and your videos have given me great insights on how to deal with all these new pieces
I've especially enjoyed this video because I have a package with clutches and gears incoming and this is giving me great ideas on how to apply them.

I'm also looking to build this. I'm thinking it would be neat to see if I can get a pf servo (or 2) to operate the levers.

Why impossible? One lever has 3 position, 3*3=9

LOL yes that's why it is possible. 🍺😂
