      Thank you for this information I've always wondered how they. Stopped the products they used back then from ruining their clothing.
      A lot of day to day information from the past. Gets lost over time because it's considered so everyday common place. At the time that no one bothers to record it.
      A really good example is Roman concrete. We know that the Romans invented it. & used it in construction of works like the Colosseum.
      But because it was such a common everyday item that no one felt it was worth recording what exactly it was composed of.
      Archaeologists have a rough idea of what it was made out of. But no known records of its exact composition ratio survive.

    I wish they would have talked about how they do the microphones now. A lot of actors wear a tiny mic on their forehead, right around their hairline.

    • @daneggo2437
      @daneggo2437 4 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      yup, that broadway/westend standard now! normally two mics incase one fails mid show! I know dear evan hansen has put the mics down the wire frame of the characters who wear glasses!

    • @peterporkeristhespiderham988
      @peterporkeristhespiderham988 4 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      ELLESAPPELLE That’s true... But having visible mics was a smart creative choice (IMO) for Hadestown. The meta-narrative of the show is that it's a sad story where the actors are the storytellers (Hermes, specifically). You see this in the very beginning and end of the show. Plus, the set design communicates the meta narrative. The obvious mics help communicate that the actors are playing actors/storytellers who are acting out the story. They're not pretending to be the characters. They're pretending to be storytellers. The obvious microphones help communicate that.
      There is a benefit for having subtle microphones for some shows (Hamilton and DEH, for example). But, obvious microphones can be an interesting and beneficial design component.

    • @bobafett5194
      @bobafett5194 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@peterporkeristhespiderham988 I have to imagine that on some level it comes down to the sound designer though because I know on the 25th Anniversary of Phantom used the same technique and I don't really see that as an artistic choice for that show

    • @liamtwentyman7275
      @liamtwentyman7275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It is just a small omni mic capsule on the end of a wire, to a mic pack. Nothing much to really say about them I guess 🤷‍♂️. Source: theatre technician as a job

    • @RecklessGirlBand
      @RecklessGirlBand 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So tiny double mics are often for people who wear wigs or are main characters with quick changes - it keeps them out of the way. Other side subtle mics are used for other characters with less active/costumed roles

    So interesting Adam talking about the clothes enforcing a certain posture. Before a certain time period, the way the arms of a piece of clothing were made was very different. They were set much further back than they are now, so when you put them on it automatically created the very straight, shoulders back posture we see in paintings. For men and also for women.

    Love Adam as the host of these kinds of tours - he has an eye for how things work that is really fun to watch, and great interview skills.
    However, as a career stage tech, I am tired of seeing backstage tours with an actor as the guest. Hundreds of the industry's most accomplished technicians, managers, and designers intimately know that show and that venue. Hearing an actor speak over them about their life's work is...uncomfortable. A walkthrough with the stage manager and/or their assistant(s) can be the most comprehensive and informative fifteen-minute look at any performance or event - they live and breathe the show every day. I'm definitely cringing that the guest is an actor playing the most prominently white role in a decidedly POC production.
    We may occasionally be camera-shy, but please let the behind-the-scenes people lead the behind-the-scenes tours. Stagecraft is a millenia-old trade, and Broadway's techs are some of its finest.
