Thanks for the video. I followed this to replace my 04 crv engine cover gasket. Some important information was not mentioned in the video. There is a fixture at the right side of the engine next to the air filter, you will need to unscrew the 10mm bolt under 2 lines to have better room to get the cover out. The 10mm bolt is really hard to access. Otherwise you will find the fixture at the right lower corner is perfectly in your way to lift the engine cover. I ended up broke one engine cover stud bolt by over tighten once I put the engine cover back. And distorted another engine cover bolt too. Then I realized Honda has specific torque on engine bolts. So the torque to tight the engine cover nuts is 7.2 ft lbs. In case someone broke the stud bolt in the engine like I do. The torque to tighten the engine cover stud bolt is 16 ft lb and you will need a 12mm deep socket to replace them. The torque for engine coil is 8.8 ft lb.
Super helpful info! Commenting to hopefully boost this to the top.
Man, thanks for taking the mystery out of valve cover gaskets repair. Well done video. Very clear and complete. Thank you for posting this up.
Thank you for posting this video!! A small piece of plastic fell into the oil fill port, and I figured it needed to be retrieved immediately. I followed your video and got it out!
Took me 4 1/2 hours but I was also replacing the vtec solenoid gasket. That took me a good hour to unseat, clean and change the gasket. Man nobody tells you how much it sucks to clean all that leaked oil off. There was also a bar right above the engine cover that was prohibiting me from removing the cover. I had to unbolt those and create a little room, but I didn’t see the part about pulling the power steering cable towards you. Hopefully that saves someone who pays more attention a lot of unneeded stress. My legs are pretty shot. I also stripped a couple engine cover bolts because I had it in my head that they needed to be super tight. If it leaks I tried my best lol.
Extremely well done video. Best I've seen on this topic!!
peaman2424 thank you and thank you for watching!
I also agree with that👍
The total valve cvr gasket job took me 3hrs!!!
Breakdown:
Looking for 10mm long socket and other tools about 2hrs
R+R Val cover gasket 45 min
Cleanup about 15 min
hello from 2021 you and ChrisFix are the most underrated youtube how to videos good job
Thanks Brian !! Never a moment spent scratching my head when I'm following you 😁 really thanks for your help
k.p. dupree glad to help. Thank you for watching!
Just clear and concise.. straight ahead play by play.
No stupid background musak
Thanks for that.
Got a 2005 crv 321k bought a month ago fir about a grand to much but doing the repairs I need to do to get it safetied which would most likely cost me at least a grand+ so I should break even in the world of broke..
Cheers
I have an 03 crv and this is going to help me tremendously. Thank you.
No one covered that bar that runs from one strut mount, two bolt points on the firewall, over to the other strut...
Super good video thanks! The valve cover nut torque spec is 104 in-lb if you want to be exact.
This is a really good video, and a good commercial as well!
OUTSTANDING INSTRUCTION AND CLEAR STEP-BY-STEP! If I were in the same neighborhood as you I would take you to lunch brother! Thanks for your help!
Thank you!! Glad the video helped. Thank you for watching!
Step and step, well narrated and explained together with the precautions. GREAT VIDEO. +++++++++++
Bernard Alexander thank you and thank you for watching!
no... i tip my hats to you on this i own a shop once you started i was like i hope he does what my father use to do which was cross tighten and you did that bro gj.
Thanks brother- perfect video to show this process.mine was a little harder to move the power steering cable enough. But got it out and back in.👍🏼
Very informative very professionsl. By far best vid on valve cover replacement ive seen so far.tjanks for all the great info
Chuck Maleman thank you and thank you for watching!
Thanks... my leak is one layer lower. Worth fixing? or do I trash the car?
Thanks for such well done video, narrative is loud and clear👍👍👍
Jose Edgar thank you and thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video. Everything went smoothly on my '04 CRV, but I forgot to replace the "tube seals" (starts at 6:10 in the video). How important are those? It would not be too hard to redo, but if they are not super-critical, I'll probably just leave it and see how it goes...
Seems pretty damn crucial. Let me know what happened, if anything happened
I've watched a few of your videos. I think your videos are good . Just one idea/suggestion, you might want to invest in a tripod, or have a camera person to hold the camera steady and to move the camera into those difficult angle shots, and free up both your hands. Other than that, well done.
Cstar I’m working on it. Thank you!
Another thing I have yet to see anyone mention is to make sure the orientation of the spark plug tube seals is correct. So how should they be oriented?
Thanks for the demonstration, this video is very helpful 😀
Just did my cover. Thank you. Very good video
What’s the torque spec on those bolts, is it 7.2 or 8.7 ft lbs?
Thanks Brian! Everything you need to know with none of the Milwaukee- I mean malarky... sorry, words stuck in my head for some reason.
Very clear & complete instructions. Works also for 2012 Honda CR-V.
hey there, I had my mechanic do this today and when i was driving home i heard a medium to higher pitch sound coming from the engine i had never heard before. it's def related to the rpms of the engine. what should i do to troubleshoot this sound?
Sounds like a loose belt.
The black gasket maker takes 24hrs to cure do you recomend waiting?
How soon can you drive your car after finishing the valve cover gasket?
brake clean sponsor this man
There is oil inside the little hose that links the valve cover and the air intake hose. Is that normal?. I was told to replace the valve cover gasket because there is oil inside the the air intake
I went in for a belt squeezing in my Honda Element 2004. I was told that the valve gasket was leaking. That it had got oil on the belt . That I should replace it , because if they only changed the belt it would happen again.
So I said go ahead and replace it.
My last oil change was at 249k. I use the high mileage oil and I replace it every 3 instead of 5.
First couple of days were really cold, so I had my heat on. Then it warmed up and I didn't have my heat on. I noticed my car starting to overheat. Put the heat on and it dropped back to normal level.
I called the shop this morning, I had taken it to and told them what was happening. I told them I didn't get off till 5. They recommend coming the next day.
My brother was visiting when I got home ( 45 min ride from work to my home) he said he'd take a look. He saw the new belt. Then looked an saw oil all down the side of the engine. Even on the pullies. He then checked the oil and it was almost empty. We added 3 quarts. Ran the car for a few minutes. Checked again and had to add another quart. So a total of 4 quarts. We then drove the car for 20 min. No over heating. We checked oil level again . It was good . We checked under car . Nothing dripping or leaking. But with all the oil on the side it would be hard to tell...
My question is shouldn't they have checked the oil in my car if I had a leak , especially if it was all down the side? And shouldn't they have cleaned it up? . The guy at the shop said they could do a pressure test ? My brother asked what was the results of the first pressure test?
The guy also said that low oil would not result in the car overheating. My brother said had I drove it one more day, as low as it was, my engine would have seized up.
Seeing as how you cleaned everything...and we're so meticulous really has me questioning all of this.
I do most work on my own car because these days you can’t trust mechanics! Aside from some of their quotes, you can’t really be sure if they’re fixing your issues or playing you and cutting corners. I suggest you do some proper research and fix these things on your own or if you got someone close like a friend or family who can help that’d be great. Saves you A lot of money
Can you offer some help? I just completed replacing the valve cover seals on my 2005 crv and sheared off the top threads of the front center bolt. I have a replacement but I can’t loosen the broken one and am afraid I’ll break it.
Good video again and I gonna try to watch and fix my 2006 crv this summer
I wish you luck on your repair. Thank you for watching!
How to Automotive thx
Are you gonna use your Milwaukee m18 3/8 part number 20-2345 impact driver to make quick work of this job? Let me know.
Thanks! Your instruction made the job easy and fun!
In your opinion, what's the best way to get valve cover bolts loose, mine are binding, I think there over tightened inside of the cover attached to the head. If i keep trying to muscle it loose do you think they will snap off/break? It's a 02 accord vtec engine
Ernst Hin it is possible from them to break. Try spraying WD-40 on them and working the bolts left and right to loosen them up.
I snapped the acorn bolt by over tighting. The one with the washer underneath (x7) can that bolt be replaced
Pry bar was tough to see... On the plastic and valve cover...I understand that may be needed if tough but a simple push and pull on valve cover will knock it loose. As far as the plastic on top of Valve cover a lil wiggle gets em off every time... Other than that dope step by step video sir
Oil is going thru intake hose (air filter area) i was told to replace the valve cover gasket
Is this word for 2007 as well?
Hi Brian, where is your shop?
My 02 is spitting oil and while I think its the valve cover gasket it want a second opinion. And if it is, well, I know how to do it now!
Allen Weber It most likely is the valve cover. But it definitely could be a few other things a second opinion he is a good idea.
Hello, don't forget the VTC oil control "O" ring they leak over time.
This is a very clean engine! Do you use synthetic oil? How often do you change the oil?
Esteban T this is a customers car and it was regular oil done every 5000.
Is there a torque spec for the valve cover bolts?
hey Brian, do you have a video of valve adjustment on a 2004 crv? Ty
sakitlikod1 I don't have one on the CR-V but I have one on a pilot. That may help.www.howtoautomotive.com/videos-2/2016/8/6/how-to-adjust-valves-on-a-2005-honda-pilot?rq=Honda%20Valve%20
I also need a valve adjustment video on the 04 crv
1:24 Do you know the name of that hose my was really suck on my valve cover and it broke I cant seem to find it, I notice it has 2 lines arond and they have coolant, PLEASE HELP
slownlow210 I’m not sure of the technical name but it’s vent hose from the air clear to the valve covers. May need to get it from the dealer.
Brian, Your videos are very helpful, keep them coming!😁👍
Lebron Jordan glad to hear the videos are helpful. Thank you for watching!
Holy crap what impact are you using again?
thank you very much for this video, very well done, easy to follow and straight to the point.
Thank you for watching!
Excellent and to the point! Perfect instructional video, thank you sir!
+Jack Larson thank you and thank you for watching!
How long does this job take???
Thanks much! Guided me right through.
Mine is leaking from the rear. The same place you added silicone to. I guess I need to add some to that part.
Ok, update! So there is this part just under, at the rear where you added silicone. I have an oil leak there. It’s the part where a wire sticks out, that looks like a spark plug. What is that? Because that’s where it’s leaking from!
@@18wheeler77 - The VTEC solenoid, 3 bolts in the rear. It is best to service from below removing the oil filter, you can get it from above but even with the valve cover off it is a challenge, just did mine. The gasket is around $6 at most auto part stores. Make sure you don't over torque.
Marc Bowen thanks. I got rid of her!
@@mabahokano7567 Great info I have a rear oil leak in that area and my leak goes down to my drain plug. You think it's the vtec solenoid and is there another potential item like is there an oil pressure sensor there that could also be leaking?
@@paquesepas6696 I would start at the top with the valve cover gasket and the vtec silinoid gasket, most of these leaks will run down the back and onto the oil pan, It could also be the crank seal if it has high milage. If you would rather add the dye and check for leaks with the glasses and light this is also an option. Just have a little patience and you find it.
So my tube seals don’t fit. The circular metal part itself looks different than. Like the cable cover itself is different.
My 06 is losing oil but i dont see any leak on the ground what do you think is causing this? Im going to do a valve cover clean like this just in case
It’s possible it’s Burning the oil. Could be rings or Valve seals.
@@HowtoAutomotive piston rings? Man if thats the problem im pretty screwed, i think i burned about 3 liters of oil already
Damn super helpful man! Saves me money doing it myself.
Nice I like to hear that. Thank you for watching!
This is awesome! Thanks so much for the info 🙂
Great job on this. Thank you!
Very well put together video. Thank you very much!
Danny Chung thank you for watching!
I hope you put up more videos on this generation CRV. Small things like fluid flushes, light replacements etc would be great!
Absolutely great video and you’re welcome.❤🇺🇸
How can you stuff the rag all the way down into the plug tube with the spark plug still installed ?
PCollen YT I do it with a screwdriver a get as much as I can and then remove the Plugs clean or Replace them. The stuff the rag down the hole and dry it out.
Good tip on cleaning the tubes
for sure better than the contraption i designed in my head for that part.
im a female...
i liked the video alot of detail and i learned something today.
now i know where the cruise control wires are haha i gotta fix that.
why does the cruise control cut off after 15sec while using it?
Excellent video! Very well explained!
Thank you!
Is the process the same for a 2009 Honda Cr-v?
marcos rico i’m pretty sure it’s the same process.
@@HowtoAutomotive and the crv 2015?
Brian, I have 04 crv and need valve cover gasket replacement and valve adjustment, would you have a video for valve adjustment? Ty
Great video, keep up the good work!
excellent vid brian, hats off yo uou bro....
Thank you!
Thanks very helpful my friend 👍🏼
My mechanic wanted $350 for this.Could a regular person like me do the job? Any tips?
Hi how do i know if if i need to replace the valve cover gasket?
Melski Melski I think when it's leaking oil around the valve cover.
If you have to ask, please do not work on your own vehicle lol.
@@derekr7814 its ok to ask, sometimes the VTEC oil gasket will be leaking and the serpentine belt will sling oil
on the valve cover. We all had to start somewhere and any info is always helpful, This is why we are all here.
Thank you for taking the time to document this repair! At 202,000 miles the gasket was very leaky. Was probably losing a quart of oil every week.
One quick question: is there supposed to be a small gap between the engine cover and bottom? I tightened the nuts like you said and there's maybe a millimeter gap where you can see the blue gasket.
Very well documented. Thanks!
Is this the same engine as the Honda Element?
Yes. i have an 08 crv + 08 element
will this work on a element?
Yes
That was fantastic. Thank you.
My spark plug gaskets are super hard rubber hard to remove.
Awesome video!👍🏻👍🏻
I don't think he mentioned what type of impact drills he uses 🤔 Good video though
So that's how to remove the spark plug tube seals. Thanks
Excellent video! Would you please do one teaching valve adjustment? I have 02 cr-v and is making some noise. I am preparing to do that as well. Thank you very much.
I think I just emailed you. I can only do one if it comes in the shop.
Awesome video 10/10
Thanks for the video .. man o need y I will do this in my Honda CR-V … gracias
very helpful and nice video..
Great video, thanks
JW Purdy thank you! Did it go smooth?
@@HowtoAutomotive Yes it did. Once you get all the plastic covers off its not much different than working on older cars with the benefit of not having to deal with two sides.
JW Purdy Glad everything went smooth. There’s a lot of room to work on this Honda, making it nice to work with. Thank you for watching!
Great video.......good job :)
Torque specs ?
could you link where you got the head gasket? i’m not sure if it’s my alternator that keeps eating the battery or if it’s the gasket.
Dude you made a video about replacing a valve cover gasket and didn't show yourself replacing the valve cover gasket.
excelente expicaciongracias
Thank you!
2008 honda crv head gasket replace
Thanks!
Thanks brother
I liked this picture
A "dental mirror" lmao. Mirrors are sold on every tool truck and in every tool catalog.
I broke 2 of the nuts and gave up.
