I have been a psychiatric social worker for 10 years. I was fortunate to work for a hospital as a discharge planner because some social workers do both discharge planning as well as treatment planning inpatient. I was an acute social worker because I was a discharge planner prior I would do alot of my own discharge planning. I am currently in admissions. Which has been my favorite. I love psych.
Thanks for sharing!!! I’m 8 months into serving as a psychiatric social worker within an adult inpatient psych unit. This was a very thorough overview! 🙌🏿 I do enjoy having a good mix of providing case management & individual/group therapy services. It’s definitely a challenging, HIGH stress role, but it’s rewarding helping patients & their families navigate MH hospital care and, for myself, gaining experience and clinical supervision towards LCSW-C licensure.
I’ve been a social worker for a few years and I’m transitioning into a psychiatric hospital setting and I’m really looking forward to it. Thanks for this video.
Thank you for this! I’m transitioning from school-based therapist with dual diagnosis (learning disability and mental health) adolescents to inpatient psychiatric social work. I’m feeling a little more prepared now 🙂
I appreciate your video. It helped me further understand why I'm not interested in psychiatric social work. What I don't get is how people lump psychiatric social work with inpatient social work. I'm currently looking to intern at a hospital for inpatient social work experience, but my school keeps thinking I specifically want to work at psych units within hospitals.
The challenge may be that the term "inpatient" is generally used when describing Inpatient Psychiatric Social Work and when it is not psych related, it is best to say Medical Social Work. Keeping in mind that Medical Social Work can be both inpatient and outpatient as well.
currently working on my Undergrad in Psychology but thinking of applying for MSW programs afterwards!and want to specialize in Psychiatry if i do SW. but i also like couples therapy
If it’s not too late just get a bsw as well or change your major to sw so that you can do advanced standing for your MSW so you can finish your Masters in a year. If you want to do psychiatry, just make sure your internship is in the hospital, specifically in psychiatry so it’ll be easy to get a job. You can still do couples therapy especially after getting your LCSW
Pursuing an MSW and specializing in mental healtj can open up many opportunities to make a positive impact. Best of luck with your studies and future endeavors!
Hey lady, I’m enjoying your videos. I’m currently in Grad school and I’m currently doing my internship at a Crisis Intervention Center we’re I’m currently learning how to do biosocial assessments, treatments, Psychotherapy, and conducting groups to the patients there. I plan to work as a medical social worker so this has been a great experience!
I think the best settings for future medical and psychiatric social workers are in the hospital setting. However, other medical settings such as outpatient clinics, dialysis centers, community health centers, and community mental health centers can also be great.
No, I do not. I wear a lab coat. Some Social Workers do wear scrubs depending on the unit or type of patients they are serving in the hospital/medical setting.
