Thankful to Ava Duvernay for getting Sankofa on NETFLIX in September 2021! I saw the original release when it was presented in my city back in 1993. To see it you had to be in the circle of friends in the know, as information was shared by word of mouth - at a time where there was no internet, social media and newspaper, radio or TV ads were way too costly. The original film Sankofa showed at one theater, one night a week and would leave a city when the crowds diminished. After the film, Haile Gerima and a small group led us in a discussion about the film. WHen it came out on VHS tape I bought it. And later when it came out on DVD I also bought it. Congratulations on the release all these years later on NETFLIX!
This is so important, African Americans are a miracle people and give us a huge lesson, you can't enslave people. From the moment a person is enslaved they start fighting for freedom. And even when it takes four hundred years, they will be free. Even when every barrier is thrown at them they will be free. All those acts and human sacrifices have led to an impossible place when you look at where they started. I am in awe and continue to be in awe of my brothers and sisters in the USA. You are everything!!
This is everything! He is beyond inspiring. So happy to have seen Sankofa, I now wish to see it again but can't find it!
