As an italia this remembers of an old game that's often played on fairs called "l'albero della cuccagna" (the tree of richness) the only difference is thats the pole is vertical (resembeling a tree) and instead of a flag there are cheeses, ham and other delicious foods. Sorry for bad spelling. Cheers from la superba repubblica di Genova
Town: Hey Italians..... we're going to rig up a long horizontal pole, cover it with grease, and install a flag at the end. Want to to try and run across to get the flag? Italians: Meh. Town: We'll cover the pole with creamy Cannoli cream? Italians: Where do I sign up?
Catching up on all of the videos and reminds me of the things my Finnish relatives would do in Finland like the wife-carry race through an obsticle course. The winning couple get their weight in beer!
Is that a Danish flag up there too? Also, wonder if he's a descendant of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower, and if so, what the Pilgrims would have to say about this Eye-talian foolery...
This is so nice to see. This is a tradition in Malta too, we call it Ġostra. Over here it most definitely goes as far back as the Knights Hospitaller and probably more.
The Dating Game show tune. Because nothing says 'eligible bachelor' like a bunch of drunken guys stumbling across a greased-up pole only to take a plunge into the salty harbour below.
I agree. As a Dutchy i know two variants on this; the vertical one above water called sprietlopen & the Javanese(?) one where you have to climb one. I do have to say i like this version, but then again i like all things where contestants can end in water, see; "fiets hem erin."
This is something that is done in Irvine Scotland with a vertical pole and there is a ham at the top. Teams have to work together to try and get the ham done.
Thank you!
Congrats dude! You made it look easy!
You're literally the guy in the video
@@AtunSheiFilms it’s not weird though it’s just something we do and like it :(

You do that and it won't be enough room to stand on that little small platform: Yikes!🤭
ours is vertical - with fruit
There’s a smile on my face. That was great. I didn’t even know that was a thing.
That was awesome, needs to be a show on Saturday night on abc

I think it would be way too much fun for them.

My roommate when I was a freshman in college was from Beverly mass. He tried to explain the slippery Pole one time and I did not understand.

Those boats are too close! As I'm watching this I couldn't shake the fear that someone who fell off the pole would land on a canoe and break a limb.
I think they’re actually pretty far away. It’s jjst the camera angle which makes them look close
I like that even bystanders shout viva.
Now this is the holiday invented by Italian Americans we need to celebrate, not Columbus day.
BOTH
One of the most sacred traditions in America.
New Englander: here's some greasy pole weirdness
Me, an Indonesian: hahaa cute 😏😳😏

This is also a favorite 4th of July tradition for us in SE Alaska.

Hahahahahahahaha‼️ Viva indeed. Perfect music.
Thank you. VIVA!
The additional benefit of seeing Sal!
...how did this come about?
Wine,olive oil,and a bet
Let's watch and enjoy
Sounds fun
ayy thats my city!
Well, as one of Italian descent who has had his fair share of handling greasy items, that's certainly a past time I'd like to try!
Cleveland has the same tradition with a vertical pole for St. Rocco rather than Peter.
top silly fun!!
LETS GOOOOOOOO
you missed it?! smh
Analogy about getting into heaven?
That pole has athens on it.
Lol this is why us guys die more than women
