  • Continuing on with my quest to find an alternative developer to Adotech IV, I decided to try TD-3. Formulated for Tech Pan, as an alternative to Technidol, I thought maybe it'll work well with CMS-20.
Recently, Adox announced discontinuance of this high resolution film. They said though that they have enough of it to last a couple of years, but only in 35mm, and... you can only purchase it through Fotoimpex.

I keep a small level in the car, as well as my bag I use for the large format, along with a cable release!

Can't wait the 35mm vs 4x5 comparison video!

Wow the Adotech 4 really is kind of expensive! 16 euro for 100ml 😲

Right?? This is why I went on a quest a couple years ago, to try to find an alternative developer. Preferably one that I can mix up from scratch. But... Adotech IV is looking more and more like the only one out there that delivers best contast and tonalities.

No loss of resolution with TD3?

Not that I could see. Definitely more contrast, though. I think to make this developer work, I would have to shoot the film at EI 6, and greatly reduce the development time.

I totally agree! Definitely some speed loss with this developer. Pretty hard to beat Adotech IV.

I developed a couple of 35mm rolls of CMS 20 II in Adotech IV and I found that it looks too "digital" for my liking. I need a little grain. I think 100 speed is just about the sweet spot for me.

I used Tech Pan once which was developed in Xtol replenished. I found the contrast too much for a usable negative. Never tried CMS 20. I'm happy enough with my stash of 25 ISO films.

I used 4x5 Tech Pan a bit in the 90's. I just couldn't get it to work for me. The resolution of CMS 20 is higher than TP, and its astounding, even for 35mm. But yes, it is tricky to tame, and in my search, I have only found one developer other than Adotech IV, POTA. It does a good job, but not nearly as good as Adox's recommended developer. There is one more developer I'm going to mix up from scratch and give a go. After that, for my remaining stash, I will use Adotech IV.

Yep, ADOTECH developer is expensive but I've yet to find any other developer that matches its qualities with CMS 20. Put some of this film behind Leica glass, expose at EI 12, develop in ADOTECH and I'll bet you'll form a new appreciation for what 35mm can deliver! I'm sure 4x5 CMS 20 could produce massive prints, but I've made a couple of 20x24" prints from 35mm that even photographers would swear came from a larger format. I've thought about ordering a good stock of it before it's gone, but I'm concerned about the future of the developer. Why produce developer if there's no film for it?

Out of the many developers that I have tried over the years, only one other has come close. POTA. In regards to 35mm, I'll be putting up a video where I compare both 4x5 and 35mm. I used Adotech IV. I order a couple more bottles to use with my small stash of CMS 20 II. Apparently, Adotech IV can be used with their HR-50, of which I have a few rolls.

No need for it to be expensive - with 5-6 chemicals you can make hundreds of different developers for pennies a liter.

@@mortimersnerd8044 I totally agree with you, but not all developers work well with this film. In fact, out of all the developers I've tried, mixed from scratch, only two come close to Adotech IV. POTA, and Caffenol CN-CL.

@@mortimersnerd8044 True. I've been mixing all kinds of formulas for many years, but in my experience you can't just drop CMS 20 into anything and get acceptable results.
