  • 25 years ago I was called by my manager in Vienna urgently to replace some of my fellow violinists in Mexico City with Alban Berg Violin Concerto...I remember very clearly it was said: and you have to convince the conductor that you really know the piece! I took it literally and studied the newly published "Philharmonia" edition with all finally corrected misreadings of the composer's manuscript up to the last note! So, when I arrived to Mexico City and met Maestro Zollman we had really much fun working on the score together...After we have finished the performance I remember him being a bit upset that the audience is not really able to appreciate all the depth and beauty of the work and me saying: there are pieces for them, but there are also pieces for us musicians!
When I first heard read the story of the Concerto creation I realized that Louis Krasner who commissioned the work and gave it the world premiere was our quartet coach in Boston at the New England Conservatory in 1988! An amazing connection...
That's about positive and joyful sides...
About sad sides: it happened to be my last orchestra performance as the left hand dystonia progressed and very soon after brought my performing activity to the end...

    Ronald Zollman, conductor

@@irmtrudagnoli3551 Hi, thanks for your kind comments! You are right - I played the same instrumental my mother Zoria used to play - it is mid XVIII century Cremonese but uncertain name (earlier it was considered to belong to G.B.Ruggeri, but most probably not)) Thanks anyway!
